Meh...computers are for ...umm..computing. :D Never liked the concept of computer gaming, that's what consoles are for.

Meh... consoles are for driving and platformers. :D Never liked the concept of console aiming. That's what mice are for!

(Seriously, though, if I ever buy a console it won't be for shooters. Any controller that is so inaccurate that they need to build auto-aiming "training wheels" into every game is not my idea of fun! I want to aim MYSELF--with the precise, direct motions of a mouse. A mouse is better than an IBM trackpoint for a reason :) The same goes for gamepad joysticks. Great for vehicles though!)

what about graphics drivers ?

i am under the impression that nvidia dont pay much attention to drivers for their 8600 in the new mac book pros. i cant imagine any of the graphics drivers for mac being to good for games, and theyre not updated all that regulalry.

you cant even go into a control panel to play with AA and AF settings or anything like that.

so if mac is getting all these games, the drivers will need to improve in performance and functionality fast and regularly

It looks like Mac gaming is getting some momentum. With C&C3, Battlefield 2142, Need For Speed Carbon, Harry Potter, Madden 08 and Tiger Woods 08; and now with Gears of War and Unreal Tournament heading towards the Mac, and now that we have Cider, the future is bright :)

I can already see the irony; The PowerMac G5 was used by Microsoft as development platforms for the 360 and to run demos.

I am going to laugh my ass off if these two games get ported and are PowerPC only. Oh the irony would be great... :p

And those EA games are to be simultaneous releases, no less!

Add Quake Wars to the list: another big-name title (probably the biggest shooter of the year aside from UT3) headed for Mac for near-simultaneous release with the PC version. Native, non-Cider (and like Quake 4 almost certainly PPC-friendly). Aspyr already has it running on Macs in the labs.

IIRC, the PC version has some new levels not in the 360 version; so hopefully we'll get those as well.

We will, 5 new chapters including the big Brumak battle. Along with some new multiplayer maps and a new multiplayer mode that sounds similar to Halo's Crazy King. (We'll also get the extras 360 owners can download--but it will be pre-installed for us, no need to download.)

That is 100% certain to absolutely NOT happen :)

I doubt it will run decently (read completely fluid) on anything other than new intel machines. The graphics are way too good!

I was half-joking. Doom 3 in Boot Camp runs nasty, so I doubt a newer game would. If I want to play GOW, I'd get a Xbox 360.

Apple writes the nVidia drivers and OpenGL implementation, so any problems are Apple's doing. Apple has to work with Epic to get OpenGL up to par for Gears of War and UT3.

I am reassured by the fact Ryan Gordon said that Cider is not being used. I hear Cider is quite good as far as performance goes, but coding games from scratch for the Mac sounds better and reassures me about Epic's commitment.

Never liked consoles. All the games look like cheap arcade garbage.

Gaming may eventually be better on a Mac than PC's...Jobs
has made it a priority at last.

whats wrong w/ it besides it wont work on PowerPC? its a great technology in my opinion

I think I've given my reasons why Cider isn't the best in other emails.

Yes, it's okay for the non-graphic intensive games, but in more graphic intensive games like FPS shooters Cider is likely going to be a drag on performance as it's doing on-the-fly translation of windows APIs to Mac APIs. A Cider game is going to be executing more code than a ported game, is my guess.

It's basically a short-cut to creating a Mac version of the game with performance overhead.

I'm not sure I understand what you're all so excited about. I've been waiting for years to see first run games come to the Mac. Hopefully Apple finally puts proper importance on gaming because currently NONE of you have the right hardware for gaming on a Mac. Unless you have a Mac Pro with an X1900 card which you spent around $3,000 for you can't play these games. And if you're using a Mac Pro to play games you've wasted a LOT of money.

Here's this stupid remark again. WHY DO YOU ASSUME WE ONLY USE OUR COMPUTERS FOR ONE USE. I use my Mac Pro to play games, do video encoding, surf the net, read email, photo editting, etc. I did not waste my money on a Mac Pro, even if I use it 50% of the time to play games, BECAUSE I use it to do other things. This statement seems to be thrown around on this board without some forethought.

I PREFER THE MAC. I'm a Mac Gamer and I'm not afraid to say it!!!

Look the main problem is the fact that Apple doesnt allow NVidia to make drivers. If you want to play the latest and greatest games it would be nice to be able to buy a 8800 GPU.

I am on the fence with building my new gaming rig for the new games coming out and if Apple allowed and kept up to date with drivers on GPUs I would get the mac pro and do the boot camp.

However since they are a year behind in GPUs I have to go PC.

I played GOW for a couple of hours... thought it was pretty dumb. Graphics are okay but the animaion is pretty bad at points. Well, I don't like Halo or UT either so I guess it doesn't matter that my sole computer right now is a Macbook.

Think I'll get some Dell for gaming. We have ones for under 1000 bucks with the 8800 GTX , 2 GB RAM and a decent CPU here in Germany. Should run Crysis ok. I like Dell for makeing cheap junk that you can replace ever 2 years instead of upgrading. THing is, even if you upgrade your machine, you'll have to buy a new one. Building from scratch is fun but expensive. I'll keep on the Mac for work/life/useful stuff and probably get a Dell just for gaming and some grunt work (encoding videos, server etc.). I'd like to have a Mac mini as a TiVO (I have an EyeTV already, but it can get annoying when you're on the go and wanted to record a show), Media Hub and server. But there's just not enough horsepower to play high def videos well and they're way overprized right now.

If you want a cheap but good gaming machine go cyberpowerpc.com Building your own is still the cheapest way if you are going high end.

I would love to go mac pro and have a 8800 and use boot camp for the gaming side. But Apple is stupid not to keep up to date with GPU drivers.

They would gain a percentage of high end purchases if they kept up to date on the GPU side.

Awesome, no Cider means no performance hit.

Also no Microsoft Live so we don't have to pay for extra content
