No Macs for games

I'm not sure I understand what you're all so excited about. I've been waiting for years to see first run games come to the Mac. Hopefully Apple finally puts proper importance on gaming because currently NONE of you have the right hardware for gaming on a Mac. Unless you have a Mac Pro with an X1900 card which you spent around $3,000 for you can't play these games. And if you're using a Mac Pro to play games you've wasted a LOT of money.

Why would any PC gamer even consider the Mac platform? Using Xeons for games is a ridiculous waste of money. If Apple doesn't deliver a gamer's mac to go with this game news then this whole issue will be a non-starter. There's a gaping hole in Apple's product line and the damn iPhone didn't fill it. C'mon Apple figure it out. Hint: it doesn't have a built-in display and non-upgradeable components!!

iMacs are for web-surfers and kids. I'd rather have a Mini. At least I get to decide what monitor to use.

GOW on PPC would be AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just let me put it on my PowerMac G5 and make the 360 look like a 16 bit system!!!!!!!!!!!
:):):):):):):)

You can play a game decently without the settings ramped up to full.. it can still be enjoyable.. If people want to play on their iMacs, thats their call.. You don't need highest end equipment to play high end games.

High end laptops play beefy games pretty well, so why wouldn't a new iMac, using new mobile graphics? They'd sure be a lot more powerful than the Wii, for example. (I'm not dissing the wii by the way, I'm a big fan)

:D I'm happy! It's good to see Mac gaming taking off again!

GOW on G5s wouldn't likely make the 360 look bad, lol.. Considering the 360 is PPC-esque in architecture already, Three core, and running at 3.2ghz. XD G5 macs would have a hell of a time keeping up.

In your dreams mate. :rolleyes::rolleyes:

I have a PS3 and a 360. There is not 1 computer -Mac, PC or otherwise (**at the moment**) I have seen that beats the graphics of these machines.

Ok ok, perhaps I was a bit overzealous with that comment :D but with the amount of RAM I have in my PMG5 and the Video Cards I have, it is going to look awesome on my system.

Ya know what's funny, I'm actually thinking about selling my PS3. I'm just not that impressed with the games out and I think developers are trying to put too much detail rendered into the games. With too much detail I feel like I can't enjoy the games. COD 4 and Resistance are notorious for having too much detail. It almost takes away from the game play.

Besides, I can use that money from the PS3 to get an iPhone!!! ;)

Well, you dont need to have the latest and greatest equipment to enjoy a game. You don't need all the eye-candy and sometimes games have these things called...a plot line or stories that you dont need a resolution at 1600x1200 or 100fps. :D However, some games don't have these things so all you can do is crank the eye-candy up. :)

Not everyone who plays a game is a hardcore gamer. Sometimes you just want to take a break from work or school to play a little. The casual game market is one of the fastest growing. But yes, I too would like to see apple put out a headless mac with some upgradeability that is not at macpro prices.

Gears of War...this could be huge news for the mac gaming scene. There's no news of this hitting PC yet right?

Gears of War has been announced to come out for the PC as well. I don't think there's any release info for either platform, it could be a simultaneous Mac and PC release, or it could still come out for PC months before it comes out for Mac.

Oh come on, this isn´t a option. If you want to play, you will play it with most quality options turned on. Sure, you don´t need overall the most fastest hardware for it, but a well balanced. Look at the iMac. The CPU and RAM is ok but the GPU is crappy. The ATi X1600 is a piece of junk, sorry, but it is. Look for example at EA announced Need for Speed Carbon for Mac, well on PC base, the X1600 brings in insanely 16FPS in quality mode with NFS Carbon and low quality around 24. Both unplayable for a arcade race game.

However, this was clear all the time that at least UT3 would come for the Mac, GOW is really nice too. However this brings in the "headless iMac" / "upgradeable Mac Mini" to a new stage. Games are a important industry combined with new hardware. And thats the point here. Hardware. Including the ability to upgrade RAM, HDD + CPU and GPU, like the old G3 to G5 computers - ok and let us not forget beige G3 and so on.
Well, you might say that Apple never brings in a "gaming rig" for whatever reasons... This also could just mean that Apple dislikes games. They maybe think Apple is for creation, for thinking different, not for "playthings", bah.

Remembering old times - yeah yeah, old times are always better then new :) - many games were available for macs and it was fun! Other people tried tuning their boot files for bringing up more memory for DOS games or Windows 3.1x.:p

Sure, the new Macbook Pro´s. Well ok they got mobile GPUs, which are slower as the desktop ones, however it could be enough for mid range quality with some options set to maximum, such as reflections, particle effects and lighting effects...

HD Trailer Link

Wow...they're trying to give UT a plot. I thought blowing things to hell and insanely fast shooting play were plot enough...I stand corrected.

Ah... that would be because we've been waiting for years to see first run games come to the Mac.

Oh yes please! UT 2004 is one of my faves, but I'm the only one who uses a mac. I think partly because macsoft completely botched the first demo version, which didn't use the accelerated mac graphics - so people would get choppy frame rates and not come back, even when a patch was released. Let's hope the next version gets done right, so I can get some brethren to play with :D:apple:

Hm, I just thought about UT3 on Mac. Well, UT3 can use AGEIA´s Physx card for heavily more details, but only the Mac Pro got expansion slots, but not PCI. AFAIK, PCI Express Physx cards are not out yet, but are expected in near future. OK, I not saying they shuld bring in PCI support. :D BUT, a "expandable Mac Mini" makes sense more and more. Now we got rumors about new iMacs and the Mini is lost. Well it´s time for a new Mac Cube!

Simply not true. There are enough of us who DO have the needed hardware to make it worth Epic's while bringing the games to market.

As for what we're excited about: playing the games. They will be fun. They will be fun at max detail. They will be fun at min detail. They will not require us to reboot, nor buy an expensive Vista license.

What else is there ever to get excited about with games, if not having fun?

Any chance of seeing at least UT3 on G5s? Prey runs on G5s how do you think the games matchup?

Meh...computers are for ...umm..computing. :D Never liked the concept of computer gaming, that's what consoles are for.

About time the Mac side got a decent game (GOW). Ah, too bad I only have a Macbook. Maybe I can run it in low quality mode. ;)

Ryan Gordon has repeatedly stated in his .plan the last years that he was porting Unreal Engine 3 on the Macintosh. It's not a surprise these two games will be ported as well... It won't surprise me if the games run well on G5 processors as well. Ryan has began porting UE3 long before the Intel Machines came out.

This is BIG news! Gears is the reason I got a 360, and although quite a short game, it is still freakin awesome to play! Will definatly get this when it comes out so I can play it on those long haul flights.

Roadie run down the plane..... :D

Knew about Gears, didn't know about UT. Although I'm not surprised. Previous versions of UT have run on the Mac.
