So if I'm currently on 9.1 with no syncs, and no backups other than 9.0 GM from a few days ago ...the method is to download final 9.0 ipsw, option + restore to 9.0 GM.

I didn't need backups for my downgrade from 9.1 beta to 9.0 official. Just shift click (Windows), select the file and upgrade. It restored with all my apps and settings intact. iPhone 5s and iPad Air 2.

I did full backups AFTER I did the restores. Make sure to get rid of the beta profiles before you do this.

This is where I got my official Apple ipsw files:

Is deleting the beta profile only something for those that downloaded the "public beta" ? Does it make a difference if I only have the developer beta?

Sorry just wanna make sure I'm going about this exactly in the right way with no spiders lurking around.
If your backup is from 9.0 GM then all you have to do is restore from iTunes with the 9.0 .ipsw and then use that backup after the restore. Since the 9.0 release is a newer build than the 9.0 GM you don't have to change nothing in the backup. The solution I posted is for people who only have 9.1 backups and want to go back to 9.0. iTunes prevents restores of backups from newer to older builds.

You only have a profile if you are on the public beta. To remove it go to Settings > General > Profile and then delete it.

Assuming you're in the developer beta there's no profile to delete.

ah , I see. so in the final question do I skip the step of option click restoring to 9.0 GM ...? I was going to restore just to be safe and then update to the final 9.0 from there. Or can I just option click restore to final ipsw and restore the 9.0 GM backup without any fear?

Downgraded iPhone 6 and iPad Air from 9.1 beta to 9.0 GM

So far no problems at all on either device. No restore necessary - just option click "Check for Update".

The Web site for iOS 9 GM is:
http://www.redmondpie.com/ios-9-download-links-for-iphone-ipad-ipod-touch-ipsw-links/

Sequence:
  • Download iOS 9 GM for your device (see links above)
  • on your device - iCloud disable Find my iphone/pad
  • connect device via USB
  • Then goto iTunes - option click " check for update"
  • point to downloaded firmware file and install
  • after install delete iOS Beta Profile and reboot
  • check software update on iOS device - should say you are on latest version

I was running the 9.1 public beta. I had a 9.1 iCloud backup and an 8.4 archived backup on iTunes.

I deleted the public beta profile on my phone and then restarted it. Still showed that I was running 9.1.

I then put my phone into recovery mode when plugging into the newest version of iTunes (released today).

iTunes automatically restored the phone and everything was exactly as it was before I put it into recovery mode. It seemed to restore from my 9.1 iCloud backup...and it shows that I'm running iOS 9.0.

I'm thrilled.

I did the same for my 5s / iPad Air 2, but did NOT disable find my iPhone/iPad (no need to). Also, by deleting the profile FIRST, you don't have to do an extra reboot after you delete the profile.

Disabling Find my iPhone/iPad is just to be on the safe side - should anything go wrong you have one less problem to deal with and it does not hurt!

Both downgrades I did without that step went off without a hitch. Whatever keeps you feeling safe. It was a pretty seamless downgrade. IMHO. All I needed to do after restore was choose my Wifi network (no password needed) and re-enter my Apple ID password and everything was there as it should be.

I was on 9.1 with iphone 6 and connected to itunes in dfu mode.

I selected upgrade I ended up with error so changed my 3m 3rd party cable for genuine apple cable.

'Upgraded' to 9.0 - software was downloaded in itunes again in dfu mode.

if you get cant be upgraded then restart your phone dont let itunes restore you will loose your data.

All my data is on iphone- no loss of data or settings.

Just done my first icloud backup for nearly a month.

Very relieved, any queries please ask

thanks to others whose posts have helped.

So just to clarify (there's a lot of forward and backward going on here). Would this be right?

1) download a valid 9.0 IPSW from redmondpie
2) delete beta profile
3) option click update and choose the IPSW file
4) update

This should update the phone without losing any information, settings, data?

I did not use redmondpie

I just connected to up to date itunes with a genuine usb cable in dfu mode and upgraded- no data lost 100% there

YES - I would still disable Find my iPhone to be on the safe side - after sucessful install it will ask you to reenable it.

I'll give that a try tomorrow. Although I'll lose News at least I'll have backups I can put on the 6S when it comes

With DFU or recovery mode you'd need a backup to put back on the phone after installing the update, right?

Here is the revised downgrade procedure from 9.1 beta to 9.0 GM:
No restore necessary - just option click "Check for Update"
.

The Web site for iOS 9 GM is:
http://www.redmondpie.com/ios-9-download-links-for-iphone-ipad-ipod-touch-ipsw-links/

Sequence:
  • Download iOS 9 GM for your device (see links above)
  • on your device - iCloud disable Find my iphone/pad -- OPTIONAL to be safe should something go wrong
  • delete iOS Beta Profile and reboot
  • connect device via USB
  • Then goto iTunes - option click " check for update"
  • point to downloaded firmware file and install
  • check software update on iOS device - should say you are on latest version

tested with iPhone 6 and iPad Air

No I had no backup, but it did warn me an upgrade might result in a restore.

Maybe I was lucky but I lost no data or settings except News & I'm on 9.0 thank goodness.

Wow! 5 pages for what you would think was a simple question!

FWIW, I had no problems going from 9.1 to the 'new' 9.0 within 10minutes, doing a simple backup and restore. ymmv, but these were my steps.

From 9.1:
1. Remove the beta profile
2. Backup to iTunes and then archive the backup under preferences>device.
3. DFU
4. Plugin and restore with the latest version of iTunes, which will automatically load 9.0
5. Restore from your backup (there should only be one now listed with the latest version of iTunes)

Restore conpleted in about 15minutes

similar to me but I did not need to restore from backup

I'm now on 9.0 13A344
