There’s plenty of examples of Apple not competing with its competition though over a number of years on features that had long become industry standard by the time Apple adopt it though. How long did it take the iPhone to get wireless charging and OLED for example? It’s not always about trying to satisfy 200 million customers a year but offering some of the basics we see their competitors offering, rather than joining the party years later. Apple very much follow these days and drive the direction of certain features due to their popularity.
Apple just doesn’t slap hardware into the phone as Samsung does. For example the mysterious “AirPower” was supposed to be used in conjunction with wireless charging introduced on the iPhone 8.

Apple takes its time with changes and makes sure the changes are ready and have a purpose. That’s why you don’t see sd card slots, ir blasters, finger printer readers on the back etc. it’s not about being first to slap a new piece of hardware into its consumer products.

I wasn’t suggesting they ‘slap’ any old hardware into the phones, just the features that are proven and already anticipated. Wireless charging had been around the mobile sector for 6 years before Apple implemented it. There have been better screens on competitor devices for at least 4 years before Apple joined the party. You say they don’t rush into things but FaceID was buggy and still is yet it’s on some of their devices. Apple are supposed to be driving the industry but rarely do these days.

Face ID buggy? Not so that I’ve noticed.

Finger print reader, 64 bit, Face ID. They drove the industry and raised the bar. All technologies that have been around for years.

Why is Face ID buggy?

How do you guys that own a 6+/7+/8+ or X/XS/XS Max comfortably carry your phone with you all day?

I love the bigger screen, but I hate the bulk of these larger phones. I don't wear tight trousers/jeans or anything (just regular sizes), yet even if I am standing up I can still 'feel' the phone and am conscious of it all the time. It's obviously even worse when I move/bend or sit down as my trousers/jeans pull the phone against me even more. I'm absolutely paranoid about bending/misshaping/crushing the phone when doing this.

  • I've heard people says things like "when I sit down, I just take my phone out of my pocket". REALLY? That might work for you, but let's be honest, for the majority of people that's just unnecessary hassle and means you always have to be conscious of doing it. It's not practical.
  • I've heard others say they keep their phone in their shirt pocket, or jacket pocket, or on a clip/belt. Again, that might work for you, but for a lot of people, its not 'cool' to have your phone in your shirt pocket or clipped to a belt - and a lot of people don't wear shirts with pockets or jackets (especially when its warm for most of the year).
  • I've heard people say "when I'm out, I just carry it around in my hand". That just sounds ridiculous, if someone knocks into you, or you drop it accidently, or you need two hands for something etc.
  • Lastly, I've heard people say they keep their phones in their back pants/jeans/trouser pocket. Again, that might work for you but I'd be paranoid of someone stealing it, or it falling out, or I forget its there and I sit on it and bend/crush it.

So for the rest of us (which I assume is still a lot of people), how do you do it? Do you just constantly wear baggy pants/trousers/jeans so it can move freely without the risk of being crushed/bent?

Honestly, at the moment, although I love the bigger screen, the larger size just isn't worth the extra consideration/hassle. A phone should be a convenience and make aspects of life easier, not be something you have to be conscious of all the time when moving/sitting etc.

In my back pocket.

In my inside jacket pocket.

In my hand.

On the table.

This. I've carried my Plus/Max phones in my back pocket since they were first introduced. It's no issue to pull my phone out of my pocket when I sit... certainly not anything close to "unnecessary hassle"... I have carried it in a jacket pocket or in my hand... none of these are problematic for me.

It's clearly the best option when compared with the 3.5" or 4" mini phones.

This is what I don't get about OP's problems. For me, size is irrelevant. I have always pulled my phone out of my pocket whenever sitting down, no matter what size it was.

I absolutely HATE having to dig into a pocket for something when I sit. It means I have to shift position and then shift back. If it was a comfortable position to begin with then that irritates the hell out of me. And having to fish the damn thing out if it's ringing is also another irritation.

So it comes out of my pocket and sits next to me, wherever that is. Having it sit on a table while I am out or next to me when in means I can see it and respond if the screen lights for calls, texts or email. Way more convenient.

I just...live with it.

It doesn’t pose any problem at all for me.

Looking at what Apple has done over time, some are as you said, making sure it is right. Others are more in line with control while other are to pad the margin.

I went to Japan this year for work... correction... LAST year for work... everyone there seems to have a tablet that they use. It wasn't as big as an iPad mini but in-between that and an iPhone XS Max. Super thin, very responsive, and everyone was using one. Sadly, I didn't ever find out what that tablet was. Yes, there were a lot of iPhones but this thin tablet (Sony Xperia?) was everywhere.

Imo this would be perfect for me.

Galaxy Note 9 in front-left pocket. iPhone XS Max in front-right pocket. Not a problem standing up or sitting down.

i used to have a "Plus" iphone, and since the XS Max is a bit smaller than the Plus iphones, but with 1" bigger display, im super happy.

My only issue is that i have a case on it as its super expensive to repair, i never had a case on any of my iphones. but due to the price i have on this, which annoys me quite a bit. I think ill run it naked and just cry a lot if i should break it (never broke an iphone yet for 8 years even though i never had a case on it). but due to price i feel like i need to have a case on it, and it looks crap

I agree with the OP. I hate carrying around such a big device. I bike often and it is just terrible to feel the phone in your pocket, it just doesn't fit.
This is the reason why I returned the Xr, and bought a second hand SE. Much better this way. Also I do not need a bigger screen anyway.

Plus since 2014???? Whenever the 6 plus came out. Always with a plus phone. Then went to a max but im finding it more uncomfortable compared to the plus. I think the chin of the plus helped.

Moving to xr in December. Tried an xr at Apple. Returned it and brought an xr at swappa used for 679. I won’t use a case with it. Just a skin for grip :)

I wear suit jackets or sport coats most Monday-Friday most days. I keep the phone in my inner suit jacket pocket. On weekends, I usually keep the phone in my front pocket - all of my pants (and shorts) can accommodate the phone.

I have a belt clip that holds my XS Max in Nomad Rugged Case. Rarely put it in pockets

Using the phone the size of my 8+ isn't really an issue for me. I don't especially have big hands, but am still able to use Apple Pay one handed without much issue at all. And I appreciate the screen size when I type -- much fewer mistakes typing on it than I had with my iPhone 6.

One area though that does have a bit of an issue is pocketing the thing. Some of my jeans don't have very deeply made pockets. Same with some jackets. Though in winter, I do have jackets with a fairly deep inner pocket so then it's not much of a problem.

But carrying it around is the only negative I see with the phone of this size. Using it on a daily basis, I appreciate the extra screen real estate.

I also realize though that no everybody likes huge phones. I would hope there would be a market for people who like phones that will be catered to as time goes on.

Why would anyone need 2 hands for Apple Pay?

As an Apple watch user I find that is the best way to use Apple Pay and I don’t have to fumble around pulling my huge 8+ out at the checkout. It’s also a bit more discreet as the watch can stay up my sleeve so nobody knows what device it is.

:D
I was worried that the phone would be too big and unwieldy to pull out of my pocket and tilt it towards the NFC terminal with just one of my small-azzed hands. But it has never been a problem, as it turned out.

I see. I just meant because ApplePay doesn’t require any action beyond holding the phone within range of the reader (you don’t even have to aim it at it) with your finger resting on the home botton. As long as a person can lift the phone one handed, that’s really all that’s needed. :D

1. Yep. You just take it out of your pocket. Totally fine. You get used to it and then don't think about it.
2. I will occasionally carry it in my hand if I'm walking a very short distance or put it in my back pack etc.
3. I never put my phone in my back pocket. I've only ever seen women do this actually. Seems to be popular in some Asian countries. I personally think it's crazy.

I'm not conscious of my phone. It's just habit and you roll with it, but it really does depend on your lifestyle etc.

I guess the question you gotta ask yourself is: Why do you want a bigger screen? For me it's the most important thing. More important than convenience. That makes the choice easy in my situation. But for others, it's best to list how you use your phone and what you use it for to see which is more important for you. Also, with the bigger screen comes better battery. don't forget that!

The human brain is designed to notice CHANGES in things rather than absolutes. It’s the reason you feel cold in your bathroom when you get out the shower, even though it’s warm, you’re noticing the difference in temperature
It’s the same with the Max/plus sized phones. You will notice the extra size/weight when you first upgrade from the smaller sizes. But your brain will quickly adapt and will become normal, like a few minutes after you get out of the shower.
So yeah, that’s how people manage to use them

I adjusted to the size increase fine but I know quite a few people who went back to smaller iPhones. I don’t think it’s a straight forward transition for everybody and it comes down to compromise. My phone does remind me from time to time how cumbersome it can be. Yesterday I was up a ladder raking Christmas lights down and it was digging into my ribs. I nearly took it out my pocket and chucked it. Most of the time I enjoy it though.
