Apple puts the model numbers on the small label on the back of the box.

Air 1 - MFxxxLL/A

Air 2 - MGTxxZM/A

Unless they've removed it from the Air 2 packaging, it should be easy to discern between the two.

And the Air 2 case will clearly lack the hole in the middle of the upper back for the rear microphone, which was moved next to the camera lens.

Perhaps trusting a BB employee was the first mistake...

Yep it is the air 1 version. But the receipt show the air 2 model number. I scanned the upc and it reads 1 model. I don't understand how this happened.

Great I bought it on a trip, I hope the local BB will exchange it. But I don't have much to back me up.

I guess I won't even try, I have nothing to prove my case. Someone must have changed the iPad air 2 case with the air one case to pay the lower price. And I got the one case in the two box.

Haven't read the whole thread, but there is an easy way to tell if it is an Air 2 Smart Case... The updated picture on the back. The old ones still show the double row of speaker holes. The new one shows the single row. Though I hated the new case because of the large lip.

Yes I see that. I've learned a lot about Apple smart cases today but I'm screwed. Work is going to ipad airs next year so I'll keep this one for then.

I like the case though, so I ordered one from Amazon, they have them for 74.99. If I don't like the Ridge, guess it will go back.

I'd say you could at least try your local Best Buy to see if they would take an exchange or return. If you still have the receipt and the box, that's at least something.

I thought about it but what do I have to prove I didn't just switch them after purchase.

I suppose I should but I'm just not up to try and convince some kid at BB I'm telling the truth. Call it an $80 lesson

If they question it, show them this thread.

For those that have an iPad air 1 case, how well does it age. I have the iPad Air 2 smart case, which I believe is made of the same material. Do I need to get those leather care wipes or any type of Leather care products

That's rather unfortunate. Can't be too careful these days. I always scrutinize the packaging on an item I buy just to make sure there isn't anything amiss, and that it's sealed and new.

IIRC, Apple's packaging for their cases uses a sticker to secure the tab that holds the clear front cover down. That helps some, but it's not hard to carefully peel it off and reapply it without making it appear disturbed.

A lot of Apple geeks here on the forum can't tell the difference between an Air 1 and 2 case, so a clerk manning the return desk at BB is probably even less likely to notice a switcheroo.

You can explain, and try to see if they'll exchange it. The worst they could say is no, and it doesn't hurt to ask.

I don't think you *need* to. I already had leather wipes and creams for my shoes and bags, so I occasionally give the iPad case a quick wipe. I think it makes the case look nicer, but I don't think it makes it last longer.

I love my smart case! I didn't have one for my iPad 4 because they were plastic and wore out very easily. In my opinion the Smart Case is the only case I have seen that keeps the iPad Air 2 light and not so bulky while protecting it as well.

Got my midnight blue iPad Air 2 knockoff from eBay today and it's pretty amazing. I had to scrape away at the inside of the home button of the case because it would easily press the home button out of the box, but now it's all perfect.

Compared next to an official smart case the difference is discernible only by the feeling of the two materials, but one big feat is the knockoff is far thinner.

Was this one of those ones from HK/China that cost around $12? If so, could you possibly post photos of the case? Was thinking of buying one of them, but concerned that they use really cheap Polyeutherane instead of leather.

I have had two from two different sellers. I would say they feel like slightly different material and at this price they are clearly not real leather but in all honesty, for the money, they are very good indeed and much better value for money than the official case. The material used, especially in the slightly more expensive model is very good indeed.

I got my ebay "Smart Case for iPad Air 2" today.
Not bad for a knock off.

I did have one major issue.
The sleep wake function doesn't work.
Which kind of defeats the purpose of calling it a "Smart" case.

Anyone else with the issue? Looks like maybe the magnets aren't lined up or strong enough.

Well, I emailed them, which they asked me to do when I purchased it, before I leave feedback.
Disappointed since it was the $20 version.
It specifically says in the description that it supports the sleep/wake.
I'll see what they say.

Which seller? Sunnymew? That was who I got mine from and it works great. Not trying to be funny but have you enabled the lock feature under settings as its different from auto lock?

Yes, Sunnymew.
I know all about how the wake lock feature works.
I have been using last years Smart Cover and case since I got my air 2.

Uggg, just got to work and the next surprise is, only the official lightning usb cable will fit the port.
My official extended adapter from Apple doesn't fit and neither does a Belkin one.
Not even a prayer of fitting.
It was tight on the Smart Case for Air 1, but it would fit.

I'm kind of shocked at the great reviews here. If you asked me what it was worth, I would have said, maybe $10.
I guess $20 lesson learned.

I suspect that is why the official case remained so comparatively thick, making it thinner would start to encroach on some of the ports. I haven't tried any other lightning cables other than the official one although I did find a pair of headphones that wouldn't fit bit they also don't fit the official case.

I bought three iPads last weekend. One iPad Air 2 and two iPad Airs. I also picked up three Smart Cases. I thought about it later and wondered if I got the right cases while I was at the Apple Store so I called yesterday to ask what the difference was/any obvious markings on the package. The person that I spoke to didn't know then he asked someone else that didn't know so he transferred me to the main Apple tech support that even though the Air 2 is slightly thinner, the cases are the same.

I'm going to read this thread more when I get home to see the differences besides one being thinner. I know on the back of each box it says (iPad Air 2nd generation). I presume that is for the Air 2? Everything else on it says iPad Air Smart Case. Best Buy has black iPad Air Smart Cases on sale for $39.99. I ordered three so I'm going to pick them up, save some money they figure this all out.

I can tell you that the case that I have fit very well on my iPad Air 2. I haven't taken the Airs out of their boxes yet.

Those $39 black iPad Air smart cases are for last year's model.
It will fit the Air 2, nice and snug.
But the camera and volume switches are not aligned.
Another tell on the packaging, on one row of speaker holes versus two from last year.

That is correct. So it looks like I'll be keeping one of the cases that I purchased over the weekend and then I saved a total of $80. on the other two so it was like buy one get one free.
