No, it isn’t, and thanks for suggesting this with on-target options. It then becomes a question of AIO vs. size. If size wins, 3rd-party display plus mini could win out. If AIO wins, the 23.5” iMac could be the choice. I’m obviously conflicted, but postponing any decision for as long as I’m still comfortable with my 2017 iMac, and it continues to function.
I guess a reason I like the all in one is that the auto brightness works best with the iMac. I don't know if that is true of 3rd party monitors?? I did try an external monitor but was fiddling with the button controls on the back all the time.

That ultimately is the best philosophy. I think far too many people are quick to just get the "latest and greatest" even if the current model they have is sufficient for their uses.

I joined the Mac family because I love how long the computers really do last. I hope to use my M1 Pro MacBook Pro for many years to come before my next upgrade.

There's a great app you can get called BetterDisplay that lets you control the brightness of external monitors using software. Definitely check it out. It's not auto-brightness, for sure, but you don't have to mess with the physical buttons—at least on some newer monitors.

Thank you. I would go that way if I were still using external monitor(s) but I decided to trade-in my Mac mini (gave away the monitor) because the screen with the iMac just looks and functions so 'seamlessly'. Ease of use for me. I only have two wires from my new iMac ... a lightning wire and a USB-C wire for charging!

I think alot of it comes down to what apple releases next.
If m4 has more gaming features then id be upgrading sooner rather than later.
Anything that results in me removing Microsoft from my home would be most welcome from Apple :p

Since the M1 chip have been very happy with 13" MacBook Pro and iMac Desktop for speed and using for meetings. iMac awesome on sound since have hearing challenges.

The temptation to upgrade has diminished based on low trade in value.

With that said, got MBA M2 13" for my special needs son and it is a very sweet machine.

In my case the trade-in value was the reason I opted for the M3 iMac ... they gave me $430 on the trade. I got a MBA for the daughter.

I mean, sounds like a pretty good deal, but isn't that actually illegal? 🤔
Do you mean using the trade-in value ... on whatever? I had traded the M1 iMac and the Mac mini so got the new M3 iMac and Watch 9. And last summer I had two other trade-ins ... a Mac mini i3 and I think a MacBook Pro ... so that went toward the MBA. I like the 'discounts' ... so now I don't keep the machines long. Plus, I worry about all the security stuff ... of course the new machines may have those issues, too. Just like to keep the software + hardware current and the trade-ins allow me to achieve those goals.

Don't have personal experience with the machines as I never owned one, but this friend of mine (not internet friend, friend I've known and see regularly for the past 20 years) went through 5 machines in like 3 months. The shortest time to replacement was about a week.

Never had any problems with the 13" replacement or prior machines...

That was enough of a red flag for me to avoid that entire keyboard line.
Understand your point but the fact remains I had 3 machines for 2 to 3 years without any issues with the keyboard.

Some people were lucky. I'm sure lots of people escaped the problem - because apple clearly didn't deem it important enough to do a recall - they ran the numbers and just lived with the complaints because they were "low enough to manage".

Whether it was a fundamental design issue, a QC issue, or a fundamental design issue that lead to unreliable QC - fact remains, it was a fairly widespread problem that did not impact previous or later machines and apple themselves backtracked on the butterfly to another new design which has not had the problem reports.

For grins I tried a hypothetical M3 iMac buy with my 2017 iMac as a trade-in. The response was a $185 credit I could apply. I think I heard chuckling in the background as well, but could be wrong. Maybe in a couple of years or so when I really do replace the 2017, they will offer free recycling.

Had my 2011 MBP until it died in 2018.

My current 2018 MBP is showing signs, but I'll keep it for Youtube and Excel until it dies.

Just bought an M3 Pro that I plan on mostly keeping at my desk. It should meet my demands for at least 5 years, and anything under that would be very disappointing.

Until it dies or stops meeting my needs.
If you use it offline (?) ... I just worry about security. But as I have mentioned new hardware and software have their issues, too. Overall, I think newer means more secure??

I'm lost.
2014 MBP. Only now is the power cord going. Motherboard is acting up. Battery is a mess. But still a solid machine. This one I've had the longest. Rest has been 5+ years.

Does not compute (at least by me). You have a solid machine, but power cord going, motherboard acting up, battery is a mess. Not my definition of a solid machine. More my definition of a decade old dying machine.

As well as online. No need worry about security, unless you frequently visiting shady sites… then, not sure if even the latest up will help.

Keeping 14” Black M3 Max 1TB 36GB RAM with 14 Cores.
#1. Until there’s Something twice as fast On the market
#2. or Apple updates the MacBook Pros with a new dual layer QD-OLED Display in 2026

I just feel bad for M2 owners they got DUPED!
I had my 2009 Mac Pro for 14 years. But that died so had to upgrade. I do though still have it. Just need to get it mended.

I now have a 16" MBP M2 1TB which I got for a steal @ £1,600.

You mention feeling for M2 owners. Is this because their machines are worth a lot less now, and could've got a M3 had they waited?

How much would my machine now be?
