Not exactly a current 2018 iPad user, but:

(I've posted this reply on a couple of other threads, so forgive the copy and paste).

I have the 2020 iPad 11" 128GB WIFI only, but I'm returning it and will be getting the refurbished 2018 12.9" 256GB WIFI only on Monday.

I thought about it and realized that I didn't really need the new camera and minimal performance gains, and I want the 12.9" screen a little bit more. I paid about the same for the refurb including Applecare+.

0% chance.

I spend the savings allocated for that upgrade on the new Macbook Air.

After 18 months experimenting with an IPP 12.9" 2018 as my only mobile device I'm calling it quits. Great for notes, reading and punching out the odd email. Multiple windows, 2-3 browers with data and needing several instances of PowerPoint, Word and Excel docs opened at the same time ... painful if not downright impossible.

If I still had my 2018 12.9 I would have not upgraded but seeing as I foolishly sold it and got a MacBook Air then I’m happy with the 2020 12.9 128GB

AR I’ve used but can’t say I will use it much. Will basically never use the camera I don’t think

The more ram is a nice upgrade though certainly when watching YouTube

Bruh how many youtube videos you watching at a time

It’s more when you’re watching something then go back later or even 20 mins later to finishing to watch it and it doesn’t refresh. My old iPad it did for whatever reason which was frustrating

Apart from ram it’s still the same power beast as my 2018 one was.

More power isn’t a big deal even if iPad bring a 5G A14x model out...new screen tech may be worth upgrading with mini led but for now it does its job very well

Yup, makes sense. Hell, even dramatic performance gains would be hard to notice given that the 2018 is still overpowered for most of the apps it runs.

I’d probably have chosen the same, but the bigger screen would be somewhat redundant for me given that I work mainly on a MBP15, and some of the music + photo apps I use will benefit from that extra RAM and GPU power.

I already returned the new 2020 iPad pros. The quality control was terrible on them being damaged out of the box. Plus they are exactly the same as the 1TB model spec wise minus the camera and the WiFi 6 spec.
The 2018 1TB has 6 FB of ram and the additional core for gpu is simply turned off and even at that it’s negligible. Apple really should just enable that core for those of us with the 2018 models. We paid more for the earlier models anyways.
But they will be greedy and not is my guess.

Yield and thermals are likely the reason it was disabled so even if they wanted to, enabling it will likely just cause more problems.

I am considering upgrading from by last year’s model, only because it is 64gb, and I would like the 128 gb. I am intrigued by the new keyboard, but not the price. With all the stores closed, I guess I have plenty of time to decide. I like picking my devices up from the store instead of ordering online.

Same with me - I’m on the fence to upgrade but my wife said the same thing to me, that she wants mine. She’s in graduate school and already uses a MacBook Pro but I can see my iPad Pro (11” 256GB LTE) providing her with some conveniences so I’m seriously considering upgrading.
That’s me. I can live with 64gb but chose to go higher. I got the 128gb 11 in. The price to this and the 256gb 11 pro is so close I decided the extra 2 yrs is worth it.

I purchased the 2018 11” on release day. Best piece of tech I’ve ever owned.

I received my 2020 12.9” on Wednesday.

The iPad is my only personal computing device. My use case is
  • Web browsing
  • Social media
  • Book reading
  • Content consumption
  • Basic video editing (footage taken on iPhone & DJi Osmo, using Luma Fusion)
  • Basic image editing (taken on iPhone, using Affinity Photo & Pixelmator Photo)
  • Work
    • Email
    • Microsoft Office
    • Note taking
    • Video conferencing
I’ve done a little bit of everything on the 2020 12.9“ since Wednesday. I notice no difference at all in performance. If you are considering the upgrade for this reason alone you will be disappointed.

I am however delighted with the larger device.

To be honest, I could complete all of the above on an even older device than the 2018.

Thank you for your honest review. Outside of this forum and power users, you won't see any meaningful differences between the 2018 and 020 model.

I’m actually thinking about returning the 2020 128gb 11 in for a 2018 64gb 11. I can save a lot of money plus my use case isn’t hard at all

Upgraded from the 10.5", to the 11" as the jump was huge, this year's jump is not so much.

I use my pro for illustration/design work, I bought it when it came out, and it still handles absolutely everything thrown at it. Never once even hiccuped.
I do not personally see the need to upgrade for a couple of years to be honest...

it’s an Overclocked A12X CPU with the Same 4GB of RAM and the Same display. What there to upgrade to ? Besides Money is tight right now. Daily life essentials are needed. Few people will splurge on iPads.

I don't think you know what overclocked means.

Besides that, the thread is silly. Of course nobody should upgrade their 2018's unless they have need for more RAM or storage (some non-performance issue other than RAM).

Time to change the looks of it too. Been status quo for too long now.

So 2 models with the same design is "too long now"?

Sold my 2018 12.9“ iPad Pro just before the release of the 2020 models as I wanted to downsize to the 11”. After reading the reviews, I ended up getting a refurbished 2018 11” iPad Pro at a significant discount. For me, the 2020 models do not offer nearly enough of an upgrade for me to consider paying the premium.

I will reconsider my options when they release the A13X iPad Pros with hopefully 8GB RAM as standard.

I bought a used 2018 iPad 11 and now contemplating if I should keep my mini 5. I prefer the size of the mini but actually need the size of the 11 for productivity. Just seems to rich for me to own both at the same time. I love the minis portability.

I like the idea of the new keyboard, dont know about the price. As far as the iPad goes, I have a 10.5 that works great for what I use it so I do not expect to upgrade any time soon. For reference I also have a MacBook Pro (2017) and IPhone X so maybe if I didn’t have those the upgrade would be beneficial.
