Only if you are upgrading from the 11 to 12.9 like me. :)
I’ve probably lost my mind. I‘ve had an 11” LTE 256GB + Pencil + Smart Keyboard since launch day, I love it! But after these new iPads were announced, I decided to pick up a 2018 12.9 Wi-Fi 64GB via Apple refurb @ $699 (plus I had some store credit).

I’ve always wanted a 12.9”, it’s the only model iPad I’ve never owned. There’s a chance I’ll think it’s “too big” for daily use, so I was too nervous to spend a full $1000. But for ~$600 out of pocket, I can try it out for a while, maybe use it as a Sidecar display, watch TV on it, etc.

I will likely take a pass this year. I have the largest one from the last iteration and it's still fast. With the Apple trackpad and/or mouse, it's plenty of power for me. I'm good to go.

I'm holding off this go-round. I just bought the 16" MBP a few months ago, so I'm not particularly interested in a modest upgrade for a device that, while I do use it a lot, I don't really need a lot of power in. My iPad is a phenomenal ultra-portable computer for me, and nothing about the new iPad makes me think that my current iPad is going to be lacking anytime soon.

I'm also interested in seeing if the rumors of a different iPad coming in the Fall might end up being true. If not, no great loss; if so, then I won't have buyer's remorse if it turns out to be something that I'd like to get.

I have the 2017 iPad pro, and I'm on the fence. Bending issue, white spots (I have white spots on my iPad) and cost are all factors in my decision matrix. Is the 2020 model sufficiently different or improved over the 2017 model to warrant spending a lot of money? The wild card in this is the trackpad support, I can see using the iPad more then I have now simply because of that, but I don't know if that's enough to push it into the buy category.

The ending issue was blown WAY OUT OF PROPORTION. I have had my 2018 since launch day and it’s still perfect. I’m as careful with it as I am any expensive device but I certainly don’t baby it. Those that hand bending issues mistreated it, pure and simple.

Trackpad support is an iOS 13.4 feature. You don't need the 2020 model for that.

There are even combo keyboard/trackpad accessories announced for iPad 7th gen and for Air 3 (also works on Pro 10.5) which is $150 cheaper than the Magic Keyboard.

Perhaps, perhaps not. People long said that with the iPhone bending, back in 2016 people largely said that (and/or blamed the owner for failed keyboards), etc etc.

One thing is for sure, there's a plethora of owners that have had to deal with bending, where as prior generations of iPads didn't.

May I ask , are both the 11 and 12.9 yours and if so what Are your main use for each iPad?

Yes, both mine. I use the 12.9 primarily for work (excel, word etc) and financial programs. The 11 is for travel, reading books, etc. A bit of over kill having both. I could get by with the 11 but the larger screen is nice at home.

I'm definitely going to upgrade to this new ipad pro. Everything about this release including improved cameras-important to me because of my need to scan documents and home build drawings, i appreciate this extra performance in the camera department. As far the smart keyboard, i view this as a big improvement- new improved key style scissor like MacBook performance, lighted keys, extra USB C built in for accessories, convenient storage compartment conceals pencil out of the way until its needed, integrated trackpad for slick easy performance. All in a package that's streamlined slim and simple. Sign me up for one, i'm all in.

I think the USB-C port on the keyboard is only for pass-through charging, not for data, etc. It does free up the on-board port but I usually just use a hub that supports external devices and pass-through charging. But it sounds like you have a good business case for the upgrade - enjoy!

On the fence with upgrading or not. My 2018 12.9" is serving me well, but my wife has already let me know she wants it when I get a new one so I could rationalize it for that. More memory and getting more storage than the 256 I have now are the pluses. The negatives for my uses are my mesh network doesn't support the new Wi-Fi, I never use the camera and the performance increase is minimal. They new keyboard is a no-brainer whatever way I go.

Same with me - I’m on the fence to upgrade but my wife said the same thing to me, that she wants mine. She’s in graduate school and already uses a MacBook Pro but I can see my iPad Pro (11” 256GB LTE) providing her with some conveniences so I’m seriously considering upgrading.

Thanks for replying, I ask because I’m thinking of doing the same I currently have the iPad mini 5. And I’m thinking of upgrading it to the 11 inch iPad Pro 2018 or 2020 not decided yet, and then get the rumoured 12.9 iPad mini led to replace my 2016 NTB MacBook Pro.

It looks like the screen resolution is identical? It's quite disappointing going from a iPhone 11 to the iPad Pro, the drop off in resolution is bothersome.
That’s a silly comparison. Is your iPad glued to your face? iPad viewing distance should bring parity to both iPad and iPhone viewing experiences. Guess you’ll be disappointed with 4K TVs with a paltry ppi of 96 on 46”. Shucks! How will you survive?!? 🤣

I just upgraded from the 10.5 to the 2018 !!' model a few weeks ago, and as I thought at the time, the new one didn't have enough to keep me waiting another month or so. I am happy with my 2018. Most of the 2020 improvements are moot to me since they are mainly camera based, and I do not use my iPad to take photos. I might go for the new keyboard though, we shall see.

Don’t see any need to upgrade from my 2018 12.9 pro. Using it with a Logitech backlit keyboard case and it’s a beast. If I used the cameras more then I may have considered it but as it stands it would be a waste of money for me to upgrade.

There is nothing new in the 2020 iPad Pro to tempt me to replace my 2018 12.9” 1TB device. The 2018 does everything I want, so I am just getting the new magic keyboard when out.

I am probably sitting this year out. I very well may get the new keyboard and trackpad though!

Same. 6Gb RAM is cool, but not essential for now. LiDAR camera is really cool, but not enough a reason to upgrade. CPU is almost the same, screen is the same, Pencil is the same, new keyboard is available for both. I don’t think this upgrade is intended for 2018 owners.

Are you sure? I’ve heard of much more 2nd gen users that had touch issues than 3rd gen users who had bending issues. I’ve yet to see a single bent 2018 iPad Pro in real life from everyone in our studio that owns one and from my friends after a year and a half. And people presented it (clickbaiters on YT and some of the people here) like it’s some inevitable thing caused by bad design. It almost makes sense, because it’s something that is much more interesting to see and understand and makes YT videos much more popular than some touch-related issue.

Also, out of box bent iPads certainly didn’t help, but that was an entirely different issue.

Some people had legitimate issues, but in general, the bending issue was objectively, definitely blown out of proportion. You can’t even see this issue on any tech reviewer channel other than the ones that are intentionally bending them. Year and a half later, respectible bloggers and reviewers are revisiting iPad Pros because of the new pointer/trackpad support, most of them praising great hardware and build quality again (in context of software catching up - hardware and build are consistently praised left and right), no one mentioning the bending - again, after a year and a half of usage (compare this attention to the online presence of an actual issue, like the MBP keyboards - it’s night and day).

Also, the 2018 iPad Pro is very popular with artists with YT channels, not a single mention of bending from any one of them (and I follow a lot). Not a single one. These are the people that use them every day, carry them to conventions, etc. Of course, they don’t usually follow forums like this, I’m convinced they are not even aware of this supposed issue.

Bending is just a popular theme. This is really blown out of proportion. No one should hold off on getting an iPad Pro because of fears of bending.

Doing the same upgrade! Though my 11” is Wifi, and I, going up from 256 to 512 gb and cellular. It will be my primary computer.

Not quite true, ipad bending reports started being a problem after the Air 1. Look on YouTube or google search it. It’s always been a problem.

My battle-scarred iPad Pro 9.7 will probably get retired for the new model iPad, however my 9.7 still works flawlessly and it probably has a harder life than most iPads lol.
Back in the Fall of 2017, I had a perfectly good 9.7 inch iPad Pro with the Logitech “Create” backlit keyboard case...fantastic combo. I sold it after only using it for 1 1/2 yrs and bought the 10.5 pro and apples keyboard case (Fall of 2017). I wish I’d skipped the 10.5 and held out for the 11 inch model a year later.

You’re in a great position now. Are you planning to upgrade to the 2020 IPP, or sit it out another yr?

Having both gives you extra tools that you can employ as you desire. While I usually do more serious stuff on the 12.9, I took a several week overseas trip and loaded up the 11 with all my files and used it successfully and loved the ability to stick the smaller IPad in carry on bags. I always carry more files than I need, but I like to be ready to respond to a question or check something that happened on a previous job. Love having a small device that has GBs of my history on it.

I have the 2018 12.9" now. I am thinking about getting the 2020 11" Pro as a travel / media player. I may get the "upgraded" 12.9" Pro if that upgrade is truly big. The only issue I have with my current 2018 12.9" is battery life, which is a bit short
