personal phone is mute most times. I wear an Apple Watch but I mute my messages on there. I honestly don't use the mute switch that much but I prefer a mute switch. I like the tactile feeling.

My mute switch is on 100% of the time. This is because 90% of the phone calls I receive are SPAM. It is truly a sad state when the primary function of a phone can be rendered practically useless by abusive telemarketers and VoIP scammers — both enabled by industry-friendly and consumer-hostile privacy laws and regulations.

I rarely use it now that focus modes are a thing, but before that I used the mute button anytime I needed to silence my phone. I still use it occasionally if I need to quickly silence my phone (e.g.: if I'm on the phone or in an appointment and want to silence as quickly as possible; it's also helpful I silence by feel).

Interesting been retired since 2007 so probably my needs for focus modes are light so never use them other than the sleep mode from time to time to monitor my sleep patterns with apple ultra these days.

Mine is only unmuted if I made a mistake. I do appreciate the button for the visual cue and confirmation, but I’m sure I will adjust to checking control center like on my iPads.

I’m skeptical of an “action button” though, mostly because I worry about inadvertent activating it.

As an Android user, I tend to use DND from control center if I happen to be on screen. But if I’m off the phone or it’s in my pocket, I really appreciate the quick flip of the physical button of the iPhone without having turn my phone on. It’s very practical.

I used to use the mute switch all the time when I worked in the office prior to the pandemic. Now that I’m working mostly from home, there are few times where I will use the mute switch. One aspect is when I’m in a meeting and presenting as I don’t want my phone to ring while I’m talking. Other than that, I don’t use the mute switch all that often.

I "use" it in the sense of changing its setting roughly once per day in each direction.

I "use" it in the sense of checking what setting it is currently on, either by looking or by feeling in my pocket, many times per day.

I have no friends and no one calls me so it’s always on mute but just in case I have an Apple Watch so if I get a call my watch catches it.

My focus modes are basically DND where I only calls from Favourites and another one where I allow notifications from a few people and apps and calls from all (for times I don't want full on DND mode, but I want to receive some notifications and calls). In the past DND was less customizable so I didn't really use it; I just silenced the phone. Also I'm off work right now, but now that you mention it I'll probably be using the actual mute switch when I'm working again since I can't have calls from anyone coming through then!

Mute all the time. I can’t remember the last time I took it off silent mode. Vibrate and AW are good enough for me. Most of the places I go have phones muted, and may be on occasion if some one’s phone rings, there are lot of stares.
I used to use custom ring tones 15-20 years ago.

Mine is almost always on mute. If Apple wants to use that space for an Action button, that sounds much more useful. They can just put a toggle on the Control Center for Mute On/Off and that is all I would need for the one day a year when I might want to enable ringing.

I am somewhere between seldom and often. I use it several times a week when I go into meetings or start a Zoom session.

Kids’ phones use it every day at school.

Hubby uses his most of the time. I got him an AW so he quit missing important texts/calls because he forgot his phone was on silent and it wasn’t within eyesight. He also has a job where he moves around a lot and can’t have his ringer on.

Basically never use it, my phone is always in mute mode. I swear I get a new iPhone, toggle the mute switch, and never EVER touch it again save for extraordinarily rare situations. The vibrations are enough not just in terms of being able to feel when I'm getting a call but also because the vibrations can be heard in quiet enough environments. This is also why the "mute" switch to me is useless because I can still hear when I get a notification anyway. Would be much more useful as an action button (like a dynamic button for play/pause for example) or customizable so I can turn it into a Do Not Disturb button.

The only time I've touched the mute switch on my 14 PM so far has been to put it back in mute mode because I accidentally toggled it back off when taking it out of my pocket.

Very interesting to see how different the button is used. I use it countless times every day to switch between ringer (when working in the office) and silent (when in meetings and outdoors).

I must admit I'm not sure how to answer the poll - is it asking how often I use the mute button (seldom/never) or how often my phone is muted( always set on)?
