How many of you mute phone most/all the time vs occasionally or seldomly?

It is always hard to also figure out what general questions provide enough choices when one makes a poll also LOL. It proved though my sense from other threads that folks used mute most of time in about 2/3’s of the cases. So the choice was trying to find out how many mute of the time, vs just occasionally and I added the third one for folks who never use/touch the mute switch. There might have been better questions that someone better with polls than me could have used ;-)
Yeah I wasn’t sure how to answer the poll either. It’s combining two different questions—1) how much of the time is your phone on mute, vs. 2) how often do you use the mute switch—into one poll, which makes it hard to answer if the answers to each question are different. One can have their phone on mute all the time and never touch the switch, and vice versa one can use the switch many times per day but be muted for only a small total portion of the time. Not sure if it’s too late the change the poll question/choices, but it should really ask only one of those questions in order to get meaningful results.
For me, my phone is on mute maybe half the time in total, but I use the switch a few times per day. I voted for ‘I use mute seldomly/occasionally’.

Always muted. So basically useless hardware.

A lot of people around here seem to mute at work and unmute at home.
So it seems it would be better to not have it on a static switch. That way people could automate it by location.
Or/and bind it to a focus mode.

I have a focus mode for work, because i only want the important apps to notify me at work. and it is automatically activated on location and that works perfectly. As soon as i leave work, it gets disabled.

I think the focus mode thing is a great idea. But some regiggering of the system will need to happen.
I've completely been frustrated by Focus Modes because of Apple's intent to sync everything. Just because I set my laptop or iPad to DND shouldn't affect my phone, and vice versa.

You should be able to turn the sync of Focus Modes off. I had the same reaction as you initially, but changed my mind now. The sync between all my devices helps me keep everything silent or audible at the same time.

I use it once I am getting a new iPhone: to set it to mute and leave it there forever.
I hate it when my phone is making noises! Vibration and an AppleWatch are more than enough to catch my attention, no need of fancy-ringi-dingi-tones 😜

Maybe it’s because I use my devices for different purposes, but I absolutely love do not disturb engaged on my Mac during a meeting, but I’m happy to receive message notifications on my watch and phone during that meeting.

I have it set so that my iPhone vibrates when sounds are off, but sometimes I would just like it to be completely silent in those situations where I can simply see the screen light up (I mean without having to dig deeper into settings). Perhaps a three-position switch?💡😃

I used to only mute it during meetings/appointments, but now I use Do Not Disturb instead.

Results of the poll surprised me.

The poll is ambiguous.

Does using “mute all the time” mean using the button frequently or just that the phone is always muted and the switch is never changed?

In either case, the new phones will still allow switching but there will be multiple ways to do that with an action button, control center, or do not disturb automation.

I took it to mean use the button often.

We have all that now: physical button, Focus/DND option, control center.

The only time I use the mute switch is when I accidentally toggle it when removing my iPhone from its case 😂

Muted 99.999% of the time unless I'm waiting on a really important call (which is likely never). Even less of a need now after getting the Watch.

I never use it. My phone is always on silent mode.

Also, unless I'm sleeping, I always have my Apple Watch on.
