£6 a month sim-only on giffgaff in the uk: pay-as-you go; more calls, texts and data than I can get through (assuming sensible use of home/work WiFi).

I'd have to give up my old plan to one that will work with new smartphones.

ATT must be referring to the 5G network, which the iPhone 7+ does not support, but are specific plans ever limited to e.g. LTE? I think they are pulling the wool over your eyes. Just put your current SIM card in your new phone if you get one or any other phone and you have the exact same service but with the addition of 5G speed and (limited) 5G coverage.

Some older AT&T plans supposedly don't support 5G.

But honestly, you're not missing much. In most places 5G is barely better than LTE, and unless you're downloading many gigs of data on your phone you won't notice a difference.

5G will become more important in the future, but you don't need to have it right now. Anywhere that you're currently seeing crappy LTE coverage will also have crappy (if any) 5G coverage; carriers recognize that most of their customers are on LTE and are still prioritizing that for now.

The only time you have to give up your old plan is when you're financing/buying your new phone through AT&T. If you buy an iPhone at the Apple Store you should be able to transfer your plan without issue as long as AT&T isn't handling the transaction.
oh really?! This employee on the phone made it sound as though if I was to upgrade to the new iPhone, that I couldn’t be grandfathered into that old plan mainly because the new phones requires more than 4g capabilities and the likes. Was he blowing smoke up my tail? My plan Will actually work fine? If that’s the case they are blatantly lying to me as a client and I really am starting to feel rubbed the wrong way.

Just buy your iPhone through Apple. If you need to finance it, do it through Apple or use the iPhone upgrade program. Then just put in your current AT&T Sim into the new phone. Shouldn't be any changes in your plan.

Sometimes I'm just amazed how complicated US carriers are...
Thank you all for shedding light on this. Damn.

Here I don’t use SIM cards. I just buy the phone and it automatically is set up and works. So even if I get the phone through apple (if my iPhone 7 does not make it until this October/November) it looks like ATT will know about a new phone because I thought part of the setup involved a call to ensure service activation on their end.

You do use a SIM card if you have an iPhone 7, since it doesn't support eSIM.

Buy the new phone from Apple, and move the SIM card from your iPhone 7 to the new phone before you turn it on. It should register with the network and come online immediately.

You don't have to call AT&T or do anything else.

Wow! Ok awesome to know! I get a little anxiety ridden thinking of how imma have to learn how to remove and insert a sim in an old phone to a new one. I’ve never had to touch any phone or open one up. Imma google that thank you. I’m sure it’s far easier than my ignorant fearful mind is making it!

I am a appreciative of yall giving me the tip to continue to get my phones with apple.

Your situation sounds almost identical to mine. In October, I upgraded from an iPhone 7 to a 13 Pro. I have an AT&T Mobile Share plan that is no longer offered. I ordered my phone through Apple. It had been a while since I got a new phone and I wasn’t sure exactly how the SIM transfer/activation would work. I ended up just powering up the new phone and following the setup process on the screen including using Quick Start to transfer data between the old and new phone. At one point in the process, the new phone displayed my cell phone number and asked if I wanted to use that plan on my new phone. (I don’t remember the exact wording.) I said yes, and when the setup was complete, my 13 Pro was activated with my cell number, and my 7 said “No Service”. I don’t know what magic took place behind the scenes, but I am guessing that the setup and data transfer process converted the SIM card info on the old phone to the ESIM on the new. I didn’t need to transfer the physical SIM, visit AT&T’s website, or call them. I did get hit with the $30 activation fee as expected, but I remained on my Mobile Share plan.

The only downside for me of choosing to keep my current phone plan is that I don’t get to take advantage of the 5G capabilities of the 13 Pro. However, that is not a big deal to me.

Wow!!!! Yes one of my phones, maybe my 7+. . . . Just automatically had everything show up on my new phone and I was like holy cow- what is this world! Like willy wonka chocolate legit!!!

Ok so I’ll def go to apple to order if I can’t take this phone but I hope I can make it through somehow.

Hearing your story and remembering feeling that way at some pointe- def calms me down!

Redpocket 8 gig 12-month plan from eBay for 219... no monthly payments

But postpaid intrigues me for roaming and just more features.

AT&T Elite under the Physicians, Nurses & Family

$39.01 Including all taxes and fees

We have 5 lines to get it that low. The Starter runs 27.70 with all taxes included. Great deal if you qualify.

It's just me myself and I or else I'd have 5 people to get it as low as I could lol

That's awesome. This will be my first month with a new employee discount so I'm anxious to see how it all actually fares out and what magical math they use!

Another UK plan here:

BT Mobile
Unlimited calls and texts anytime
50GB data that is doubled to 100GB cos BT is also my ISP

£15/month sim-only

I have a lot of data but I probably use less than 2GB a month given I’m on Wi-Fi most of the time. I do like the safety net though.

Verizon 55+ $33.16 per iPhone total of 4 equalling $128. We pay with credit card auto-pay. Unlimited everything. All phones are paid off. My daughter and her husband pay half and we pay the other half. Paying my bill with my Verizon Credit card I monthly get a discount of $7.42 making the bill we split 121.05. My husband and I are over 55 and could put our kids on the plan.

You can grab a couple of extra people on Reddit /accountshare sub to fill out your plan if you like. Can save a lot of money and once you get people established they tend to not leave. Just be up front, no device purchases via the plan, they need your authorization at the store to do so. I have a waiting list of people that are begging to get on the plan since its price is so close to what you pay for MVNO service but with AT&T proper, unlimited and you can avoid deprioritization with Elite or put yourself over all the MVNO users on towers with the lesser plans.

I have two lines, each £15 each. For this we get:

30GB Data
Unlimited calls
Unlimited texts

I also got £75 cash back for taking out each new line from our companies reward gateway.

Mint Mobile $15US/month if paid a year in advance which I did.Unlimited talk and text BUT:I am retired and only need 2 gigs of data. But even their unlimited is half what I was paying AT&T.
