Holy crap you Americans are getting ripped off! No wonder iPhones are not that popular in north America; in Hong Kong I can count the number of people I know that do NOT own an iPhone. I signed a 2 year contract and I pay around USD40 per month for unlimited texting, unlimited data plan, around 2000 minutes (not too sure how many since I never use them up) and I got my factory unlocked iPhone from my carrier for around USD200 so basically half of my monthly bill pays for my phone. I also have a Chinese number that costs me $30 a month for pretty much the same thing but the phone number has several 8 in it (these are more expensive in China), a regular pay-as-you-go plan for iPhones in China costs $.04 per MB and calling costs $.02 per minute, with monthly plans being much cheaper.

Hah, yep we are. I have a question for you though. Just 100% curiosity - what kind of service do you get in Hong Kong? Just wondering because the population density is much higher on average than the United States.

Do you mean customer service? Since rent is so expensive most stores try to maximize their utility so even at high end stores it's rather difficult to get decent customer service when each sales assistant has to serve a lot of clients. One of my relatives from Europe recently visited Hong Kong and went to a high end shopping mall where most shoppers bought a lot of stuff and when he asked to look at a bag the overloaded shop assistant told him 'It's Gucci why do you want to look...' Still, I would rather get bad service than to pay 5 times more for my phone bill  Most big companies in Hong Kong have call centers in mainland China where they can afford to hire a lot more people so if you don't mind getting your problems fixed over the phone then it's not that bad.

Oh haha. I meant call quality and data speeds/stability. But the customer service aspect is interesting too.
I went with the cheapest provider for my Hong Kong number so while I get a 4-5 bars signal in the city center I usually get around 3 bars in more remote areas. Since the population density is so large I guess it makes it cheaper for each user since each antenna can reach much more people. I went with the most expensive provider for my mainland Chinese number since the prices were more or less the same and I get a 4-5 bars signal almost all the time. On the other hand the 3G internet speed in Hong Kong is very fast and reliable while the one in mainland China is a bit slower and can't be used to access YouTube/Facebook/etc.

Just realized you guys also have to pay for data tethering lol. I hope you have a lot of wifi hot-spots. My HK contracts actually includes free wifi and my carrier has hotspots all over the city center. Mainland China has very few hotspots but since tethering is free both here and in Hong Kong I don't really mind.
