Apple should raise prices by whatever amount they need to stay hungry, motivated, and able to continue driving their innovation story.

Whether it's $100 more, $200, $300, or even $500 more, we'll pay if they create the right product.

doubt many would pay if they upped them by $500 thou. That would certainly make me reconsider my upgrading time frames

I predict we will see:

iPad Pro 11” - $799
iPad Pro 12.9” - $999
iPad Pro Max 12.9” - $1199

they 100% will charge extra for Mini LED no doubt, but by doing so they need something in between that’s and the 11” as the price between those models will be quite dramatic...

Unless they go for:

11” $799
12.9” - $1099

That is another possibility...

What I would like to see is a 12” Pro and a 14 or 15” pro... that would make more sense with the iPad Air stealing the thunder from the 11” Pro quite a bit.

If given the choice between 999 IPS and 1099 I'd take IPS anyday... A 14-15in iPad pro, that's a completely different story and I'd happily pay a $500 premium as kind of did when I got my 12.9 back in 2015 at almost double the price of the air 2 (granted with more storage)

IMO, Apple now has a pricing issue with the iPad Pro - the 12.9" models are now more expensive than MacBook Airs. That made sense when iPad Pros were much superior technology, but that is less obvious now. I guess a mini LED iPad Pro 12.9" will have better screen, speakers, etc than the MacBook Air, but functionally MacBook airs will have better processors and RAM...
...or....the new IPad Pro line will be a smaller screen than 12.9"....in order for the IPad Pro series to achieve cost and sales price alignment with the rest of the adjacent product lines that Apple has recently updated, namely IPad Air and Macbook Air. ?

What you mean the new generation pro won’t have two sizes? Yeah it will

11 inch and 12.9 aren’t going anywhere. Nobody knows what apples plans are in the future but for now the models they have is what they will keep releasing
As stated before: the MO will be to introduce a new single-size Pro series with Mini LED in 2021, keep the older two-size Pro models (which will not be updated to Mini LED) warmed over for another year alonside the new series, then drop the older ones In 2022.

I agree with this TBH, it would make sense going forward 100%

iPad Mini - $499
iPad Air 10.9” (could go to 11”) - $599
iPad Pro 12” - $999
iPad Pro 14” - $1199

The problem with releasing the 11” with the A14X with an LCD display in March is that the Air is still a far better value for most people... so it’s either scrap the 11” Pro altogether or change the sizing, and changing the sizing seems more logical

That's not what @Osamede is suggesting though.

I believe this is how he sees the iPad's future line up.

iPad - $329
iPad Mini - $499
iPad Air 10.9” (could go to 11”) - $599
iPad Pro 12” - $999

I think for 2021 they will issue either a Pro 11 and Pro12.9, with the 12.9 coming with Mini-LED standard, price increase on the 12.9 only OR as suggested above a Pro 12 with Mini-LED. Why bother having three SKUs for Pros when you can trim down the line with one super version...

In regards to evolution between Air and Pro, same thing happened when the Air went 10.5” (matching most features from the 10.5 Pro) while the Pro went to 11” with the new form factor...now we have a Air 11 that is close to a Pro 11...hmmmm

Writing is on the wall. The wall being iPhones.

iPad Mini
iPad
iPad Pro
iPad Pro Max

Same will happen in MacBook space.

I think the main issue with the 11” Pro at this point is that the Air is fantastic for the money... and with the pricing as it stands $599 for the Air and $799 for the Pro, I think there needs to be more than a better chip, better speakers, Face ID and better screen refresh rate for the mass market to want to spend that extra $200...

There must be a reason why Apple spec’d out the Air so well...

Now it’s one of three things that’s going to happen:

1. They do exactly as above, which may lead to the 11” ultimately being a bit me and not selling as well as it should.

2. They scrap the 11” Pro completely and just have the 12.9” going forward, potentially loosing customers (as we know many people do like the 11” Pro size).

3. They introduce a half way house (12”) model which will keep the 11” pro crowd happy, but also will be welcomed by a good share of the 12.9” market... and those 12.9” users who don’t go with the 12” due to the reduction in size, will most likely have an even larger sized pro to look forward to somewhere down the road map.

That’s my thinking... this is certainly an unusual time for the iPad line up at this point.

Theres not that many 12.9users. And of the percentage who are ready to buy an update, Id think few will reject an updated 12”.

At the same time if you were ready to update the 11”, 12” will be fine if they use the wider aspect ratio and take advantage of newer tech to achieve a weight reduction.

Apple wouldn't have gone through the trouble of turning the 11 into 10.9 to differentiate it if they want to replace the 11 pro... A14X, promotion, better speakers, slightly more screen, possibly double the RAM and double the storage justify the $200 premium.

That is a valid point...

The problem is at this present time the only rumours we have is that the 12.9” is getting Mini LED... now if that is indeed true, how are they going to pitch not updating the 11”?

I think we are either:

Going to get a updated standard LCD 11” and 12.9” with an additional 12” or 12.9” with miniLED. (Quite possible)

They are going to ditch the 11” and just release a single 12” or 12.9” with miniLED (Quite possible)

Going to get both the 11” and 12.9” with miniLED (Unlikely)

Going to only get an 11” with LCD and a 12.9” with miniLED. (Very unlikely)

-

What we have to remember is Apple want to keep the iPad as it’s own product and not get people switching their MacBooks out for an iPad... I think the issue at the moment is that the 12.9” does make the iPad a laptop replacement for many... whereas a 12” is an ideal size to encourage the need for a MacBook still...

At this point who knows what’s going to happen, but there is definitely a thorn in the side of the 11” Pro at the moment in respect to the Air, because Apple are going to constantly face the current issue the 11” Pro has right now unless they alter its size or differentiate it a lot more than just better speakers, chipset, screen refresh rate etc...

completely disagree with your expectation. I would rate the last 2 scenarios as the most likely and the first 2 as very unlikely...
Rumours have been so confused lately, probably also because of Covid, that any kind of predictions make little sense right now... But people can't stop speculating... Hope not too many people base their current purchase decision on the confusion that is going on right now...

Yeah I understand where your coming from but all rumours are pointing to only the 12.9” getting updated at the moment... but I really can’t see them only updating that model, that’s like the equivalent of having the iPhone Pro with an LCD display and the Pro Max with an OLED display it just simply wouldn’t ever happen.

If they are keeping both the 11” and the 12.9” they will either both be updated or there will be a separate model

That is why I say look at the iPhone line up for 2020.

Pro and Pro Max do not have the same insides. We could see a Pro and Pro Max iPad. Either way, we find out over the next few years.

sure, why not an additional 12.9 with mini led at a higher price, but that does not validate all the speculations about the 11 being discontinued or some other size being introduced soon...
By the way Samsung does exactly this and with OLED. The bigger OLED S7+ is exactly $200 more expensive than the 11in S7 with LCD...Otherwise they have the same internals specs, so I don't see Apple adding more than $100 for a mini-led model, and personally I think that the $200 price difference would be already enough (=the 12.9 is overpriced right now...), but it's Apple, so everything is possible price-wise....

The 10.9" might be for the base iPad in the long run. The iPad is set up as a bit of a hand-me-down chain at the moment, so it wouldn't be surprising for the Air to go to the 11" Pro chassis and the iPad to get the current 10.9" Air chassis, with the only question being what then becomes of the 11" Pro. It sounds like this would be at least a year (probably 2) away with the near term plans for the base iPad. By then the Pro line would be well due a redesign anyway, so you'd in the space of a year see the iPad Pro get a completely new design, the Air go to the the 11" Pro design, and the iPad get the Air 10.9" design.

2021: 10.2" iPad gets a laminated display. iPad Air chip bump(?). iPad pro chip bump/extra miniLED model

2022: 10.2" iPad gets a new chip but no design change. iPad Air gets the 11" Pro design. iPad pro redesign

2023: 10.2" iPad becomes 10.9" iPad, adopting the Air design. iPad Air chip bump(?). iPad Pro chip bump(?)

11” LCD - $799
12.9” LCD - $999
12.9” MiniLED - $1199

or

12.9” MiniLED - $1099

- There have been leaks about a 12.9” mini-LED screen on an iPad for it seems like two years - given these leakers are coming from the supply chain, there is about a 100% chance that an updated iPad Pro in the familiar 12.9” size will be released in the coming months

- Given this I have no idea how they will differentiate the iPad Pro with the iPad air in the 11 inch size. I guess you could do it with Face ID, better screen and processor, more pro storage options, etc. One excellent way to differentiate the Pros from the other IPads would be to add a second, high resultion video call camera to the right side of the iPad so it looks better in horizontal view

The obvious comparison is the distinction between the 13” MacBook Pro and MacBook Air.

They share the same SOC, same storage options, same memory options, same camera. The difference for the Pro is slightly better battery, better display panel, better speakers and mics, and the TouchBar.

I really don’t understand the thinking of getting rid of the 11” iPad Pro because of the new iPad Air.

If it’s simply a linear move to an A14X, the Pro will have a more power SOC, presumably more memory, way higher storage options, better speakers and microphones, a way better panel with ProMotion, FaceID, and a more advanced camera system.

In my mind, there’s way more differentiation between iPad Pro and iPad Air than MacBook Pro 13” and MacBook Air. If both those laptops exist, than both of those iPads can reasonably exist
