I have the first 11" iPP, 256 GB storage, which we got week 1. It's still super fast. (None of the most recent iPadOS features exclusive to M1 machines are at all compelling to me.) It's my most fun Apple machine. (Not my FAVORITE, but most fun to use.)

I actually bought an M1 11" to play around with earlier this summer but returned it. There just wasn't anything (in my use case) that made me want to spend the dough.

Plus, the current iPP is good for kids watching movies on road trips, playing games, etc. I would be overly obnoxious if I let them use a brand new iPP.

I’ve had three iPads, two of which have been severely affected by iOS updates: An iPad 4, which I willingly updated to iOS 7 (inexperienced me… I was one iOS version behind and I was already worried by app support. Hindsight is 20/20… Now I’m four versions behind and I don’t care) and regretted it when performance dropped and apps started crashing. Used it for several more years after that, and vowed never to update anything again.

Upgraded to a 9.7-inch iPad Pro, which I still have. I learned this time, but Apple didn’t, they forced me out of iOS 9 (A9 deactivation bug) and battery life was severely impacted. Used it for several more years after that, and got an iPad Air 5 a couple of weeks ago. With a little hope, this one will be on iPadOS 15 forever.

That’s what I did. As for what I want to do? As long as the device works exactly as I expect it to for the things I want to do, I don’t really worry too much about upgrading. I almost use my iPhone 6s on iOS 10 more than my current iPhone, because I like it.

I just buy tons of iPads when they go on sale.

I own iPad 1
iPad 2
iPad 3. iPad 3 was the last full price ipad ever purchased

I stopped buying the cellular iPads after version 3 (the worst gimped iPad ever)

iPad 4 late 2012
iPad Air (2013)
iPad Air 2 (2014)

Since than I slowed my iPad purchases
iPad Pro 9.7 2016 (worst battery life ever)
iPad Pro 10.5 2017 (have to my son)
iPad Air 3 (2019 best deal ever $289 military store sale) gave to my son
iPad Pro 11 (2018) (purchased as apple refurb store in June 2019 for $500)
iPad pro 11 M1 (military friend got it for me $599 no sales tax) in may 2022

My 10 year old daughter has 3 budget iPad 9.7/10.2 I have purchased over the years

So I guess I just have purchased a lot of iPads!

My most hated iPad was A5 gimped iPad 3
My favorite iPad was iPad Air 2

But the m1 iPad pro will soon be my favorite iPad cause I see myself owning it for more than 2 years. That’s the max I seem to own and personally use an individual iPad.

I absolutely love getting shiny new gadgets and I probably use my iPad more than any of my other Apple devices. My 2018 iPad Pro is still serving me well. I had a 9.7" Pro before that.

I have a 9.7 pro. I don’t know if I’m really that compelled to upgrade or not. It doesn’t help that they’re still not rumoured to give the 11” pro a mini led display. And with an oled iphone and mini led MacBook Pro, buying any new device with washed out blacks feels not worth it. :(

I’ve bought the last 3 iPad Airs…

iPad Air 3 replaced my iPad Pro 1st gen (went to sister so I could trade in her iPad 3rd gen)

iPad Air 4 replaced my 3 (went to nephew so I could trade in his iPad Air 1st gen)

iPad Air 5 replaced my 4 ( went to sister so I could trade in her iPad Pro 1st gen)

I have an iPad Pro 12.9 3rd gen from 2018 (cellular/1 TB). I use it to display sheet music and also as my main computer when traveling. I could update it but there's really no reason as I rarely use it other than those 2 cases.

The iPad is a bit like the Apple Watch in that it doesn’t really change enough to require an annual upgrade and most people seem to keep them 4 or 5 years from what I’ve experienced.

Mine is an armchair surfer so I just keep mine until the battery starts lasting less and less. My 2020 iPad Air 4 has been great and still is, no complaints.
