5/10, I was quite disappointed.

Where is the Black Theme mode? :D
Oh man I really wanted dark mode. Forgot about that. Was hoping El Cap would at least finish the dark mode thought across the system. Guess not! Would be especially good if future devices incorporate OLED displays like the Apple Watch since the black pixels are turned off which saves on battery.

The list of things I want with iOS is getting bigger and bigger each year as they're not adding much.....WAKE UP APPLE :(

I know not iOS 9 related, but 2GB RAM will help the iPhone 6S tremendously. Plus the obvious new processor upgrades, will make the phone warp speed fast, and that was my gripe with iPhone 6 Plus, at times felt sluggish.

I sold my 6 Plus for Nexus 6 mainly due to that.

Sorry for the highjack but is there a GSM, etc. specific version of iOS 9 beta 1? I seem to recall previous iOS versions having carrier specific software. Curious if that's changed to just one size fits all with iOS 9.

10/10 so far on both iPad Air 2 and iPhone 6+. FINALLY Apple fixed the goddam landscape bug on the iPhone 6 so for the first time since its release, the iPhone 6+ is actually useable.

The multitasking and PiP is fantastic on the iPad and I'm blown away by the cursor control and two finger selecting.
I wasn't aware of the landscape bug on the 6 Plus. What are you referring to?
When you opened Safari in landscape mode, all the links would not work until you rotated it to portrait and back. That was the worst. There were others too. My post history has some rant about it.

I have this annoying bug to! Every link or press/touch doesn't work on landscape mode. I hope we see in the next full release of IOS 9 being solved.

I'm cool with everything on my iPhone 6, except for the 20% hit on battery life... and with everything on my Air 2, except for the fact that you can't navigate fwd a page in Safari anymore... that action brings up the multitasking popover. I think it should require two fingers.

More betas to go.

I know.
I've been doing this for a long time. My dev account was opened in 2010.
But the title of this thread was "what do you think of iOS 9?", not "do you think instead of five beta builds this year, there will only be one?", or "do you think that the betas will each get progressively better, with more features?".

And what I'm saying is that more than likely that's not what's going to be in iOS 9 when it's actually released (otherwise it's going to be one really crappy release). It's not to say what you observe isn't happening, just that it's extremely likely that's not what iOS 9 will be by the time it's actually ready.

And realistically the thread is more about what people think of the features that were presented as being new or different in iOS 9, and not really what iOS 9 is behaving like in beta 1.

Gotcha.
You may get REALLY tired though, reading all the comments, and replying to every single one that mentions a bug or something that doesn't run optimal: "they'll probably fix that later".
Wow, super... great. Thanks. What did that add to the conversation?? Nothing. As a matter of fact, it's actually talking about the quirky little problems that show up in new features that calls attention to them & can help get them addressed.

Ah.... that brings me to my next iOS 9 impression.
Though I really am enjoying Siri's "Intelligence" upgrade... I wish there was a way to select the topics of the news articles that show. I have ZERO interest in national news... which is what it currently shows. If I had my choice, it would display local news & tech news only. *ahem* While I do understand that functionality may be added in the future (maybe by mirroring your settings in the News app, which is NOT present in beta 1?), I thought it worth mentioning that it is currently chose for you.

And there are threads focusing on those types of things as well, like https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/ios-9-0-beta-1-bug-fixes-and-changes.1890516 and/or https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/ios-9-0-beta-1-known-bugs-build-13a4254v.1890666/ among some others.

10/10 for iPad Air 2.

8.5/10 for iPhone 6.

High scores but that's because iOS 8 and iOS 7...let's just leave it at that.

I'm pretty disappointed. The only worthwhile feature for me is the battery saving functions. I don't see anything new here, it looks exactly the same as iOS8.

It wasn't really expected to be redesigned or to offer some huge changes. The expectation was that it would actually improve existing things.

For "the most advanced mobile operating system" I expected more. Yes, there is some nice new features but like always, no love for supporting smaller countries, like always US and expansion is so slow to another countries. Baltic countries still don't have iCloud two-step verification....

I give 4,5.

You cannot expect expansion to smaller countries to be any faster. Apple is an American company so of course the US is going to get all new features first, and then they shift their focus to larger nations in an attempt to distribute to as many people as possible.

More of a minor update. Same as the last two years.

I am not sure what Apple are doing. Clearly not a lot.

So you're the reason why Apple and every other manufacturer feels the need to come out with the new operating system ever year

I think the major updates in iOS 7 and 8 have had some people thinking we're going to get radical revisions of the OS every year. We'd never have a stable OS if they just kept piling it on. It took months for some of the features in iOS 8 to work perfectly for me (i.e. 3rd party keyboard glitches).

People want all these major updates piled on every year and then then complain that the size of the OS keeps growing!

i assume it is interactive 3rd party notification like quick reply for third party apps just like the messaging app

Is that an actual API announced? I haven't heard anything about it, and I feel like this would be front page news if it were to be true.

iOS already does so much. For the people giving it a 5 out of 10, I'd like to know what your expectations were. A night mode would have been a great addition, but I can't really think of anything else off the top of my head.

Their expectations were Android :D

iOS 1 to 2 to 3 to 4 to 5 to 6 to 7 were relatively major updates. Everything since then has just been incremental updates/tweaks/refinements. iOS is not something that can be updated every year, hence why each new release since iOS 5 has been full of bugs & issues and due to lack of software engineers, Apple can't work fast enough to implement anything 'major'.

5 to 6 was definitely a lot less than major than iOS 9, and maybe even 2 to 3. iOS 8 was major as well. Just because you can't see it doesn't mean it's not there. While iOS 7 might have been the biggest update visually, iOS 8 was probably the biggest update system wise, as it opened the platform in a way no other iOS version did.

2, 4, 5, 7, and 8 were definitely the biggest releases. 3 and 6 were minor, but I think what iOS 9 has done is more than those two.

iOS9. Widgets allowed on homescreen yet ?
Software keys like stock Android, and all Windows Phones. I missed the back button big time. If iOS had software navigation keys, that would help a lot.

Oh well, Apple will take another 5 years to add needed software features.

The back button is built in. Swipe from the left of the screen. If an app launches you into another app, the status bar changes to say "back to x" and you tap it to return there.

After watching the "brief" WDC, I said 7.5, but after reading this, I give 9.

On the surface, the amount of new features in iOS 9 doesn't seem comparable to last year'smassive iOS 8 release, but the changes to user experience (especially on iPad), Siri, and performance could be just as profound and beneficial. iOS 9 is not a Snow Leopard release. It shows a deep care for refinements and improvements, but also bold new ventures such as multitasking, News, or Intelligence.

7 out of 10.

It's really not that buggy at all. I had planned to just install it on my iPad for a few days and go back to 8.4 but it's too good to do that. Legit this better then the iOS 7 GM. The new features are also amazing and I love them. PIP is amazing. It lost 3 points because my iPad gets WAAAAAY to hot. I really hope beta 2 comes fast and fixes it.
