So, in conclusion there just must be something wrong with my wireless connection because I've done everything like you said but safari just says I am not connected to the internet.

Sometimes it takes some tinkering. Try opening Safari on your iPhone, browsing to a site, then try it on your computer. See if that helps.

OK, so I did what you said, but then I found that to do anything on the web I have to visit the site first on my iPhone... is that just the case? Or is there any way around that?

That's weird. For me, all I have to do is open Safari and I can surf at will on my computer. I can even use Adium, and other stuff.

Damn, that sucks. I always have to visit the main site first to view anything on a certain site. Like to view everything on Tuaw.com i first have to visit tuaw.com on my iPhone.

I too have this exact problem. At least it works in a pinch. Maybe we are not doing something quite right or maybe it is the 1.02 firmware?

Sounds like you're experiencing some kind of DNS error. Try finding the IP address of some web server, then enter that directly on your computer, without visiting it first on your iPhone. This should almost certainly work.

I'm no expert whatsoever and haven't done my research, but it seems logical that the proxy server is caching the IP after it does the first lookup...which is why it always works after you've visited the site using your iPhone. Something is keeping the computer from doing a lookup.

I have no idea how to fix it if that is the problem. Maybe someone else can chime in?

I followed the instructions to the letter, triple checked it, but no pages are coming up for me. I hope someone can get this up and running for those times when you just can't get a wifi signal.

Anybody know what the real risk is to getting the boot from AT&T? Can they tell the difference if you're tethered (I read someplace that they could based on packet info). What would they kick a perfectly good customer to the curb for using services that you're paying for...albeit in a different manner? I would think that would be counter-productive to their bottom line...

Id love to get this to wprk, but my iphone gets an error when ever i try to connect to my created network. Ive tries many times. Any ideas???

Can't you just use Internet Sharing?

I'll admit I haven't tried it, but why can't you simply use the Internet Sharing feature on your Mac? Go to System Preferences -> Sharing -> Internet, select AirPort from the list, and Start Internet Sharing? At that point, your iPhone should see an AirPort network hosted from your computer. Or am I misreading what people mean by "tethering"?

You have it backwards. We are not doing this:

iPhone -> Mac -> Internet

We are going this:

Mac -> iPhone -> Internet

We are connecting out Macs to the internet through our iPhone's EDGE connection.

Well, I feel dumb! Thanks for the clarification. I suppose it would be non-trivial to get routed and dhcpd running on the iPhone in order to get rid of SOCKS. I haven't played around with the networking on the iPhone yet, but I certainly would like to.

I'm trying to get the tethering thing to work. I understand all the step, but getting hung up at one...

the srelay step in the vt-100 terminal... I get the following error:

Code:
# srelay
/usr/local/etc/srelay.conf: line 0: no valid
 entries found.using default.
no server socket prepared, exitting...
cannot open server socket
#

Now, read earlier that there was an error message that get's kicked out - but with the no server socket prepared, exitting line - it would lead me to believe that the socks server does not fire up. I tried to cat the file - no luck, I tried to vi the file - it comes up empty, but it will not allow me to write the file, even empty - just to create it.

Any tips or suggestions? I'm running 1.0.2 firmware, not sure if apple fixed this little "bug" or not... I hope not....

How did you install srelay?

I did not see a place to install srelay - it was my impression that it was part of the BSD system that is installed before the vt-100 program...

Anyway, I just went back and looked - I do not see a srelay package in the install area.. or anywhere else on the phone for that matter..

Oh okay, I should have been more specific. srelay is part of BSD Subsystem, so you installed it the right now.

I don't know what the problem is, then.

Okay,

I am now holding my mouth right - not sure why it's working, but I'm actually post thru the connection right now...

Anyway - any hint's on how to get other web services to work? mail, adium, ichat, etc...

True, but they cannot tell the differrence from you using your iphone or you using your computer- to them it all looks the same. Just downloading data. That's it.

I've been using MediaMax on my Samsung Blackjack for about a year (supposedly a no-no itself), and tethering via USB to a Powerbook G3. AT&T is non-the-wiser. They tend to look the other way as long as you don't ask for support or, say, post in a public forum that you're doing it. .. ;-)

Come and get me, Ma Bell.

They also have a policy against streaming video, and yet... um, YouTube? Somehow, I'm not sure if the same policies always apply. I looked around for it though...

so, this thread has been amazing. i'm actually writing this post on my MacBook which is tethered to my iPhone. my deal is that i cannot get any of my other applications to access the internet. only Safari. i'd love it if Mail, iChat, etc could. any ideas?

Also need some help tethering I do everything followed to isntruction.. but i believe im having the same problem with srelay as others...

*When I type srelay in term vt100 it says no valid entries found. using default. no server socket prepared, exiting... cannot open server socket*

Everything else with the instructions is smooth, but this step i dont think is giving the right output

if you had read this thread, you would have seen that your question was already addressed. that output is normal and you should proceed through the rest of the steps.

I think the issue is one that some would want to tether as a semi-permanent connection - but at Edge speeds I don't know why. That could be a strain on the resources for AT&T.

But for the rest of us, those that would want a larger screen and full keyboard for our laptop when traveling, tethering is a life saver from those high hotel and airport WIFI fees.

I may wait till next weeks iPhone update to see if it breaks anything that has been posted so far.... thanks all for the hard work....

Got it to work, a little iffy sometimes but the weirdest thing to me is why it will not load a search engine, google, yahoo, dogpile, and so on. Loads almost every other site? Any Idea's?
