The tiny market grew by 50%, so 10 to 15. Better make tri-folding phone. What about my comment triggering the folding phone market. Getting lots of comments about how people are seeing so many in the wild, yet very few owners, themselves.
Because it is an Apple centric site and Apple doesn’t make a folding phone.

Its hard to find premium numbers, but I did find this ... I have a hard time believing foldables will jump to 33% in two years when they are only at 1.3% now ...

In a report published late last year, the research firm estimated that consumers bought about 16 million foldables during 2023. That represented about 1.3% of all smartphone sales. According to Counterpoint, foldable devices’ share of the premium smartphone market could jump to about 33% by 2027.

That article is comparing two different numbers. It compares against all smartphone sales, and then in the next sentence compares against only the premium segment.

Although Motorola tried to bring foldable into the mainstream segment last year, it largely failed and they moved it a bit more upmarket this year.

How many people do you see with foldable phones? I just saw in those two years only three people

What's your point? I've only seen one 24" Apple Silicon iMac in the wild, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't exist.

If Apple actually felt they needed to innovate with smartphones, rather than just build taller walls to keep people locked in, they would have already built 2 or 3 models of foldable.

Motorola is a Chinese company these days.

Well, everything lower than the iPhone 15 pro is obsolete because they aren’t able to use all the possibilities of iOS 18. That’s a two year old phone.

I think you have a different definition of obsolete than the majority of people.

The idea of foldable suffers from various design issues: thickness/loss of battery life, fragility, ergonomics, aspect ratio, on-screen typing, user experience of the transitions, usability while folded, catching on clothing while being pocketed, etc.

I don't expect Apple to release a foldable phone until the majority of those are solved (and I say that believing some of them are unsolvable).
The Honor Magic V2 and V3 have already solved both the thickness and battery life issues.

When folded, the Honor Magic V3 is 9.2mm thick, and only 4.35mm thick when unfolded. It is also only 226g in weight.

Compare that to the iPhone 15 Pro Max which is 8.25mm thick and 221g in weight.

The Honor Magic V3 is equipped with a 5,150mAh silicon carbon battery while the iPhone 15 Pro Max has a 4,441mAh lithium ion battery.

I honestly think the only real issue with any foldable is fragility. Which will improve with each new release other time.

The only thing holding Apple back is Apple themselves.

So nine phones in three years ? You really tested their durability ............
I never said I tested durability long term. Some I've owned for a year, using them daily, and I had no issues. It seems like a lot of people on MR think foldable displays will fail after a few months. Therefore, I thought it was worth mentioning my experience.

But no one in the US or Europe is going to buy it, so I wouldn’t say they are going to upstage Apple.
Sad, because I remember the time when everyone in Finland had Huawei phones. Ever since the sanctions it's not the case anymore.

If Huawei truly amaze with their product introductions and Apple’s products are as boring the rumors tell you, be sure every headlines in every media. They will compare the introductions and keynotes. Very smart move of Huawei by not only introducing something amazing (what Huawei predicts) but also introduce their EV platform Apple wasn’t able to produce hours after apples keynote.

It’s an “eat this” at Apple and I’m sure it’s making Timmy sweat!

If there weren’t sanctions I’m absolutely certain Huawei got more popular than Apple in Europe and would compete with Samsung for first or second place.

That sounds interesting, SOOOO....WHO IN THE PAST 11 PAGES OF COMMENTS is buying the Huawei Tri-Fold Phone????
......🦗.........
AWESOME upstaging there!

There's a lot to unpack here...

1. what boat did Apple miss in AI exactly? Where's the uncrossable moat? It seems to me AI is quickly on its way to becoming a commodity with little in the way of differentiation. If anything, I'd say AI is an unmissable boat ;)

2. sure, the form factor of foldable phones is intriguing, but they just aren't selling in significant numbers so far, mainly because:
a) the screens aren't nearly as good as their non-foldable counterparts and
b) the phones cost a lot.
What exactly is Apple missing here if they don't feel the technology is ready for prime time?

3. Whether Vision Pro becomes a success or not, I can't tell you. But I can tell is that spatial computing will absolutely become a thing and Apple is wise to play the long game.
I think Crazyblox was being sarcastic
