With an outward facing screen, how will it stop from getting scratched?
You'll need special pockets.

Did anyone take a screenshot of the Mate X's protective cover case when they showed it? It seems like no site has posted the image of it in the case which actually looked really good

It's got a cover case that folds with the phone, they showed it during the announcement, but nobody seems to have posted the images of it in the cover case

Can't wait for 2nd and 3rd gen of these devices. It will be a game changer.

They got it so right indeed.

Phenomenal, they leap frogged Samsung right off the bat. $2600 is really silly though, but similar to Samsung I'm sure it's more of a "luxury" item. But $2600 to steal my info, err I mean to sell me a folding tablet, just seems like a lot. I don't have much of an issue spending 2k, but that's around where I start to draw the line because that 2k marks where I'd typically be if I purchased a flagship phone and flagship tablet. We still have one more, I want to see how Xioami prices their foldable tablet, and they may just have the best design out of the 3 so far IMO.

These are Androids, their prices will drop

I say give it 2 months after launch, heck, wait for Black Friday/Cyber Monday even, these things will become bargains, especially with 3 of them competing.

Yep, looking forward to that Xiaomi device to.

I am just glad that the industry finally has some new stuff for us enthusiasts, it was getting rather boring, but now over the next 5 years we are going to be spoilt with some real innovation with these devices.

Apple will release their foldable at least 4 years away when the excitement is down and people have already transitioned to foldable phones. Due to Apple's painfully slow adoption, they lose out on market share as people have already moved to Android foldable phones.

Of course the elephant in the room is the software. Android apps on tablets are notoriously bad, for the most part just blown up apps with no added tablet functionality. Samsung is the only one out there really making a difference here in their tablets (although only a small difference IMO). So if the end result of having a fold out tablet still means tablet apps suck, then that would certainly give me pause in buying one just yet. That's another reason why the rumored surface phone is first on my wish list, and I'm sure Apple won't do anything like this for 2-4 years.

Speaking to the above, isn't Samsung's dex mode adding the capability to run full blown Linux? That means a desktop browser among other things. Not sure where, if at all something like this fits into the Galaxy X, but definitely food for thought. It would be great to have a lightweight, yet full desktop OS like Linux, maybe a dual boot option. I highly doubt it, but it would be geek heaven.

In other words, Apple will sit and waif for Samsung, Huawei. Xiaomi etc... To pay for the R&D and then swoop in when it is profitable to make a Foldable.

Apple are all about staying as profitable as possible, so it makes sense for them to delay, until there is economies of scale in making a foldable device.

Wow, that's a really nice case. I wonder what's covering the screen, it's hard to tell as that's just a render. Hopefully some kind of glass cover. The more I see of this phone the more my list grows of stuff I will be selling in order to get one.

Did Huawei announce a release date?
edit: never mind, summer 2019

Early adopter technology is always expensive. The first Sony XEL-1 11" 540p OLED TV was $2,500.

Interesting to see how foldables evolve but potentially it can replace two or three devices in one (phone, tablet and laptop).

It does look nice, but it's too damn big. Why would you even want to unfold for a bigger screen?

Samsung Fold's main display is too small.

I'm looking for something inbetween. IMO, 5.8 inch main display is the perfect size.

Gen 2 will be maybe worth buying.
I wouldn't touch either of them personally.

Anyone else notice parts of the plastic screen passing through the hinge (about 1cm on each side)? If so, is the unfolding mechanism of the panels meant to pull the screen through there so that it ends up flat with minimal creases on the screen side?

That’s what you want. I don’t. I like the Huawei implementation. Big screen in normal view and a mini tablet screen when unfolded.
“For mine”.

But most people off this forum would also want a smaller folded screen than 6.6”.

The undulating waves and crease in a plastic screen. No thanks.

Just look at the crease from this screen cap from the Android Central first impressions video.

It doesn’t look practical. Samsung’s one is simple and although ugly the mechanism is better. The mate X is too big in Folded mode. I can only think of a few occasions when I’d want to open it out and that would he to watch a tv show or movie. Everything else including YouTube videos I would do in the folded portion.

The galaxy fold is smaller when folded so I could see myself doing messaging, taking calls, reading notifications, playing music, reading emails and maybe a quick web search when it’s folded.

I would unfold for watching any kind of media, lengthy replies to emails, playing games, lengthy web browsing.

I haven’t watched the Huwawei event but Samsung also were able to demonstrate how they had tailored the software experience for the folded display e.g app continuity. I don’t know if Huwawei were able to show what they had done different software wise.

The fold is not very elegant but it’s the more practical design of the two imo.

Think the galaxy fold is more practical.

I take it out and quickly flip open with my my thumb and I'm using the phone already. I can see myself opening the fold for most normal usage (phone with a big screen)

Mate X is less easy to unfold as you have to use your fingers and pull from back and twist your hand backward. This is quite unnatural to do. So you are likely to just use the phone folded which defeats the purpose of having the bigger screen when using the phone.

Both devices reminds me of the beginning of touch screen phones. Manufacturers were unsure whether they should have styluses, keyboards, file explorer or an FM tuner.

Basically the use case had yet to be figured out. Thr same is true for this foldable phones. What's more practical, elegant or cost efficient, phones folding out or from the inside?

Yes a foldable phone can double as an iPad but how do I stand it on a table? Do I put on a case with a stand, if so will it fit in my pocket? The Huawei is slim but how do you lay it flat on a table? Will it eventually get stylus support?

Questions, questions, question.

Ask ten product engineers to design a foldable phone and you will get different solutions.
