Huawei so f.. incredible. Just wow. Can't want to buy one when they get reasonable priced. Just incredible.
The possibilites just expanded - You have an instant stand for your smaller screen, & maybe even a dual use setup for two people, as they make use of each of the smaller screens in 'a-frame' mode.

I think it’s certainly an innovative take on the folding device. In comparison to the Galaxy Fold, it eliminates the need to put cameras all over the place, provides a much larger display when used folded up in ‘phone mode’ or as a tablet and is pretty thin.

That being said, if push came to shove I think I’d still take the Galaxy Fold. I don’t want my display entirely on the exterior and I can’t believe I’m saying this, but think I trust Samsung to implement a much better software experience than Huawei.

If Samsung had made the Fold a touch taller and a bit wider to create a device with a better ‘phone’ display and slightly larger tablet display, I might seriously consider giving it a go. It only costs about $300 more than my the two devices in my arsenal that it would replace—iPhone XS Max 256GB and iPad (2018) 128GB.

Yeah I can't disagree, although my first choice is the Mate. I also trust Samsung for a better software experience, especially with the tablet side of things. Let's not kid ourselves here, Android really really sucks on a tablet. But with that said the Mate's design is so vastly superior to the Fold's design that it's not even a contest between the two IMO. Honestly the Fold's phone portion is very much bordering on the useless.

I am not familiar if Huawei has any Android tablets and if they've made OS modifications to improve the tablet experience, that would be a great litmus test. This is besides the action of switching from phone to tablet, it seems like Huawei has that down in the videos I've seen. My concern is solely with how Android apps will function on the tablet portion and whether they will just be blown up smartphone apps.

Also a great hands on here: https://www.cnet.com/news/i-used-th...foldable-phone-believer-galaxy-fold-mwc-2019/

Lol, the haters of this phone will just keep having to desperately grasp at straws

This phone is truly a culmination of a 2019 Flagship and a Tablet in 1.

I am just so blown away at how well Huawei has put this together and even doing constant live demos, not putting it in some glass case and having some actor use it, they are actually having people try the damn thing out, kudos Huawei!

This is just glorious!!! Look at how near bezelless that screen is no matter whether it's Folded or Unfolded, it is so damn sleek! Does not look clunky or bloated the way the Samsung does. Also the fact that when you take a photo of people they can see what they look like - you have no idea who awesome this will be when you have to ask a waiter or a stranger to take a photo of you and your friends or family with your phone and boom you can see how you appear right there.

Finally, look at how the guys are holding the Mate X comfortably whether Left or Right Handed there goes that nonsense out the window, it seems comfy to hold either way and we'll balanced. Nonsense being debunked with each demo...

by the time Apple release a folding phone, Huawei will have the holographic projecting phone out.
Apple is so far behind. I bet all we get this year is new emoji with a 'one more thing, ooooh look apple fans, it's an egg memoji! Hand over your credit card. Although I have been loyal and have stocks in Apple i'm glad they took a kick in the financial balls this year and I hope it wakes them up to start competing.

Loving how people are actually able to touch the Mate X and give it a go, no glass cases here, just more and more press being allowed to play with it gives a lot of confidence on how near ready the device is, unlike the others...

More Hands on with Mate X

Another who’s changed their mind after using a Foldable...

Huawei built a folding phone similar to Samsung's Galaxy Fold — but killed it because it was so bad
https://www.businessinsider.co.za/h...galaxy-fold-killed-it-mate-x-2019-2?r=US&IR=T
We’ll see.

They both appear to have glaring flaws, but the industry needed both of them.

We’ll all benefit from their polarising designs.

I can see Apple sitting back & gauging how real-world use of the Mate X/Fold compares to their own blueprints & coming up with something that’ll up the ante. Competition will be fierce. Can’t wait. :D

It's an awesome time to be a tech enthusiast, finally there are varying forms factors again.

Remember the time where it was Flip phones vs. Sliders!?

I remember Nokia making the N93 the most powerful Flip phone and the N95 8GB the most powerful slider back in 2008

I was eager to jump on the phone/MP3 player as soon as it hit my shores.

The Siemens SX1 was that initial convergence device I was after. I still have it! Awkward buttons but it did the job before the iPhone happened.

Haha! I remember I was 13 when the SX1 arrived, I wanted it.

My first "convergence device" was the Sony Ericsson W800i Walkman Phone, at the time that phone came with a huge for the time 512MB Memory Stick, 2MP Auto focus Camera and a stunning display.

I got my first smartphone in 2006, the Nokia N80.

the current best foldable phone implementation. The Huawei Mate X looks stunning. If it's priced right I'm going to get one. What do you guys think about it. The Samsung Galaxy Fold is ugly when you see this.

I use an old BlackBerry QWERTY cell phone and I really glad to have it. What is the reason of having this device in your pocket?

"If the phone can feel like a phone when folded..." That's the quote I got from Rivera's thoughts on EXACTLY why the Fold doesn't make sense and the Mate does.

To be fair, if you use an old blackberry, pretty much any current smartphone is not your ideal device.

Indeed, and everyone who sees it knows this, it’s just that some people have tied themselves to one phone OEM and so need to go with whatever that OEM does even when it’s already clear Huawei got this one more correct the first time around.

The best part is where he said that it felt like a Galaxy Note9, and THAT is the whole point of the Mate X, it’s a thorough Flagship smartphone when folded through and through, yet becomes a Tablet on top of that. This also means that when Folded the Mate X will be more familiar to people than some competitors.

I am loving these hand on videos, they just keep debunking peoples baseless claims that were made about this device not being right. Icing on the cake is that he feels the phone seems to be consumer ready software wise. Huawei doing a fantastic job here, they really seem to thoroughly understand the market, this would make for a great marketing case study in fact.

I'm also not thrilled with the look of the Fold where it looks like they just stacked 2 phones on top of other. Aesthetics are important to me, and I really like the look of the Mate when folded, very professional looking and at first glance you wouldn't think it was anything but a large smartphone. I'm not saying it doesn't have weaknesses, certainly getting scratches all over it might be a massive weakness, but we just don't know yet until Jerryrigeverything gets his hands on it. I don't know if I'm exactly thrilled at always having to have it in its case. But we are in the wild west here and have to make compromises until technology catches up.

Absolutely agreed, 100%.

Excited to see what we get in the next couple of years before the OEMs start settling on a set design.

Some close ups of the hinge in this video...

Huawei saying they think the ripples in the fold area will be addressed by launch. Interesting.

Sounds like the crease doesn't exactly disappear. At the same time, though, it's good enough we can't tell from pictures.

Couple of hands on I've read said that the crease is present, but invisible if looking at the tablet straight on. Holding it at an angle you can just barely see a difference in light reflected and a subtle crease. If this is the case then the crease is NOT an issue for me at all.

Edit: Just viewed Ralfi's video, yeah definitely ripples there. I don't think they would bother me though, unless they interfere with the touch functions. I think we have to be realistic here and expect some limitations and not everything will be perfect.
