Anyone else notice parts of the plastic screen passing through the hinge (about 1cm on each side)? If so, is the unfolding mechanism of the panels meant to pull the screen through there so that it ends up flat with minimal creases on the screen side?

“For mine”.

But most people off this forum would also want a smaller folded screen than 6.6”.
I'd rather have a 6.6inch screen Folded vs. going back to a puny 4.6inch, just does not make sense to me. I already use a phone with a 6.4inch display daily anyway.

Both Samsung and Huawei have a long way to go, but I think Samsung has a much longer way, they need to get rid of the Notch in Tablet mode, and get a bigger screen in phone mode... Actually both screens need to get bigger on the Galaxy Fold.

One could just get a Huawei Mate 20 X with its 7.2inch screen with a much smaller notch over the Galaxy Fold, really.

Hell yeah I'd rather have a larger screen when closed. I find it odd that some see keeping the Mate folded more often than open as a negative. It's a positive if you can accomplish more with the screen closed IMO. The Fold seems like I'd be opening that screen all the time for stuff that I normally could do on a phone screen. Not only it's small size, but it's really very narrow form factor will guarantee you are opening that to tablet mode most of the time. I'd like to reserve tablet mode for those times when I truly need it.

Then maybe stick with a normal phone. :)
What's the point of paying huge money to use it folded most of the time?

But if you use the folded out screen as the primary display then Fold is much better. It is easier to unfold and to hold as well. More sturdy too

Exactly my thoughts. You would unfold the Mate X when it is absolutely necessary to do so, 90% of the time you can use the huge 6.6inch display, the other 10% you can unfold it to 8inch which is for things like long Netflix consumption, Document Editing, longer Emails, Multi window multitasking etc...
I would hate to even use WhatsApp on the Galaxy Fold's joke of a front screen it looks like something from 2010.

The Mate X fits the Convergence of modern Flagship Smartphone and Tablet all at once, it truly replaces both.

I pay big to have a large screen no matter whether the phone is Folded or Unfolded.

If I wanted a iPhone SE display, I would get an iPhone SE.

Wow they just made Samsung's iteration look silly and like a concept that should have been scrapped at the design table. This looks really good and soooo much better than the fold. Can't wait to see what the future holds in the fold-able phone space.... And I can't wait for Apples' $3500 version in 7 years!

The convenience of having a tablet AND a smartphone in one package which fits into your pocket is why foldable screens are a big deal. But I want to choose when and where to use the tablet portion. If I'm on a subway with one hand on a railing I sure as heck don't want to unfold this to a tablet just to get a text message out. But when that seat opens up then I'd love to be able to unfold it and view my news or a webpage. It seems like that decision will be much harder to make with the Fold than with the Mate.

Of course everyone has a different use case scenario, I can only speak for myself. If your personal use case is using the phone folded out as a tablet the majority of the time then I can't argue against that, since it's just how you use it. But I would highly doubt the majority of consumers want to use it this way, simply because of convenience. The same reason why tablets stay inside bags until it's convenient to use them. But once again I'm not putting down your choice, but if it was me I'd just carry a small tablet as a phone at that point.

Yep, that's the way I use my ipad mini currently. The ipad mini goes into my back pocket, but I still use my xs max for texting, phone calls and very light emails. Once I get the opportunity to be able to sit down somewhere then I can break out the mini for longer emails, videos, web browsing, books, etc. It's going to be a huge relief to have both of those devices rolled up into one, but I don't want to compromise either experience. The Mate seems like the one that most closely will provide both experiences with less compromises. Honestly I cannot fathom what Samsung was thinking with that little display, it's a level of ineptness I'd expect from a smaller, newer company, not from a behemoth like Samsung.

Imagine folding a iPad 11 and putting it in our pockets or even a small carrying case?

I do believe as they advance and refine this technology that this could become a reality. We are not far from it, here we have an 8inch Foldable screen, as the components get smaller we may get 10 and 11inch Foldables, with screens that Fold in multiple areas, anything is possible.

Makes one wonder what we will see around 2021-2022.

Android Central got hands on with the Mate X, remember how some people here said the Mate X was going to be hard to unfold?

Turns out Huawei thought about this, to unfold the Mate X you press a button and it semi unfolds to a point at which you unfold the rest of it, this phone just keeps getting better by the day:

Does Huawei make Irons? They’d come it handy for that crease.

I’m kidding. Hope it flattens out by launch.

What crease are you seeing? I've tried to slowmo and pause that video and can't make out any crease when folded open. I thin there is a reason why this is pretty much hands off at this point, they are still making adjustments to it.

Seems pretty clear in this grab from the Android Central first impressions video...

Ouch, yeah you're right. Hopefully that's something they are adjusting, I suppose I will have to wait until I can see it in person. It's been a looooong time since I've felt one of those plastic screens so I'm still not sure how I'm going to feel about them, even if they are perfect and have no crease.

Is anyone else annoyed by the round end on the right side of that picture?
Everyone hold the Mate X with their right hand in all the videos and that round part would be easy to hold.
But I am right handed and hold my phones in my left hand and use my right hand to navigate through my devices.
That would seem to make holding it in my left hand awkward....

Why not just reverse the tablet? Worst case the camera would be on the lower part instead of the top.

I want reviews...nnnnnnnow!

Man, I'm not seeing ANY creases at all when folded out. Screen is fairly reflective and you can see the crease reflections when they just begin to fold it, but when it's snapped open there are zero creases. 2nd video the guy says you really have to look hard to maybe see some sort of crease. Very impressive. Definitely thinking about getting one of these!

Absolutely brilliant!!

This thing looks like the most prime time ready Foldable phone.

Huawei really thoroughly thought it through. This is now the 2md time they troll Samsung with this device, by letting the press use it.
Yes it is really good.

I think it’s certainly an innovative take on the folding device. In comparison to the Galaxy Fold, it eliminates the need to put cameras all over the place, provides a much larger display when used folded up in ‘phone mode’ or as a tablet and is pretty thin.

That being said, if push came to shove I think I’d still take the Galaxy Fold. I don’t want my display entirely on the exterior and I can’t believe I’m saying this, but think I trust Samsung to implement a much better software experience than Huawei.

If Samsung had made the Fold a touch taller and a bit wider to create a device with a better ‘phone’ display and slightly larger tablet display, I might seriously consider giving it a go. It only costs about $300 more than my the two devices in my arsenal that it would replace—iPhone XS Max 256GB and iPad (2018) 128GB.
