Every frickin article about Apple, in which comments can be posted is full of the same tired crap.

"Macs don't run games"

"There is no software for the Mac"

"Macs are more expensive"

All of these are just untrue. However, I am getting tired of fighting the battle. Some of these people are just too darn stupid to get it through their heads.

*Sigh*

Stop fighting it, then. Just give them the "you have no idea" smirk when they say that and don't say a thing.

I use to be like that. I think you are actually quoting some of this things i've said in the past, but i came to find apple and mac products exceptional. It doesn't really matter what other people think. If they want to believe macs are an inferior product, let them. Hopefully, at one point in their life, some one will show them up with a mac, and they will be enlightened. I wouldn't waste with people that won't listen because you can't convince a man whose mind is already made up.

Just agree with them.. adamantly so..

Them: "I mean, there's no software for the MAC."
You: "I know! What the hell? None! No software at all! I mean, what do these millions of people do when they buy Macs? There's no freaking software! I mean, everyone should be able to download 30 different applications to do one task. Why limit yourself to 3 or 4 that work? it's so silly."

What bugs me is that if they took 10 minutes to research it, instead of listening to the garbage that has been spread over time they would know that these things aren't true.

If their PC's are so amazing you would think it would give them accurate information.

I'm not smug about owning a Mac over a PC, but I am amazed at the sheer number of people who have to waste their time running multiple scans and/or removing spyware on a regular basis. Don't get me wrong. There are people who can keep Windows PC absolutely malware free, but let's be real about that. Those people are in the extremely HIGH minority. Everyone else simply wonders why their machine is so slow or, in the case of my own girlfriend, she didn't even realize that her IE's about blank page was now an adware page.

As long as WE exist, Apple and Macs will continue to exist and flourish. If PC users wish to fix their own home PC's after an 8 hour day of their work PC most likely not working right, that's on them. I'll be making music with GarageBand without the malware hassle interrupting. :D

Of course, going into a retail store gives you the same impression, even the Apple stores. They have very little in the way of software. I know that there is more out there but none of the stores I've ever visited has had much. Were the mid-1990s that much better?

Just laugh and go "Pants!" in a derogatory way like I used to when I heard that. If they try and engage you in a debate go "Utter! Pants!" then smirk and walk away.

It may not work, but it will annoy the hell out of them :D

Lol, I work at a computer store that doesn't sell macs, its kinda hard not to tell people to walk away and go to apple, especially if they want one and I have to convince them to go to PC

Correct me if im wrong, but is this not true?
Im not defending anyone, but to my belief this is true.
Ive been running a windows machine the past 20 years, running a mac machine for the past 8, linux the past 2. I do find it the more difficult to get apps for mac over windows.
To be honest, im sick of people making mindless comments about windows. or as its known to 80% of this forum as windoz. Viruses are a joke that is being emphasized by mac users, trying to get one over on windows. I have yet to have one of these viruses that are supposed to 'cripple' your machine.
Again, im not saying one is better than the other, i just wish a pentium multithreader could be thrown into a mac case, with an osx gui controlling windows vista.

No, it's not true.
In most instances when you hit the Dell website and BTO a computer with similar specs to a Mac, including all the bells and whistles, you're looking at the same or higher price on the Dells.

The misnomer comes in because Dell offers (because they sell a lot more computers and are therefore able) a HUGE range of low/mid/high end computers.

So, yes, you can get a $400 PC from Dell. But would you want to?

I think where this argument rears it's head legitimately is when you can zip down to your PC store and buy all the pieces/parts you need for a very nice PC for ~$1000. You can't do that with Apple because their hardware is proprietary. To run OS X, you either get it from them, or you don't get it at all.

I've been in IT for 15 years at a VERY large institution with a TON of PCs and I've seen a lot of viruses come in that took down large portions of the PCs on the network. It's more than just viruses, however. It's exploits, spyware, and zombiefied machines that people don't even know about that kills me. A lot of regular users don't know jack **** about patching and whatnot. They just do whatever they do with ignorant impunity.

There's no doubt that Windows XP is MUCH better at SP2 than it ever was previously. Having the firewall on out of the box, as well as the auto-update feature (being auto-on) was a Good Idea™. Too bad they took their damned time getting it rolled out.

A PC (from Dell or someone like that) configured similarly to a Mac may be slightly less. But with the Mac you also get a computer that is engineered to look and function better.

I hope you don't think I am making mindless comments about Windows. I made the switch last year after 7 years of IT work. I built, fixed, and programmed for PC's.

Sure there is a ton of crappy software for Windows. Crappy freeware and shareware. If one really need these, then I guess the choice is clear. However I don't need to run 50 programs a week to get my work done and most people don't.

A big time techy will want his PC so he can swap out graphics cards and what not. However, the home user has no need or want to do this. So saying Macs suck for reasons that only apply to big tech people is foolish.

Even though these arguments are pretty valid?

One example: I didn´t have necessary TV subscription for viewing the soccer world cup because I didn´t have a neccessary satellite disk and I was moving abroad 1st July. So I found only one solution; view the games through the internet and the only application I could find was for Windows. I wanted to use one of my iMacs to send the signal to my projector, but I had to use my IBM laptop. So if I only had the Macs, I would have missed the World Cup.

Yes, OSX is superior to XP and so on, but in my experience Apple hardware isn´t better than IBM, Asus or home builds from high quality components. But don´t believe me, just look at how hot Macs run compared to e.g. AMD builds or IBM laptops. I don´t know how hot my IBM is. I don´t know how to measure the heat, but it is just warm, but far from being hot.)

We've already been through this in several threads showing that Dell is substantially cheaper due to the coupons available. In fact, a Dell E1705 specced BEYOND a 17" MBP was [a few months ago] $1500 less. Now, I'd probably still buy the 17" MBP, because I love OS X and the design of Apple, but give it a break. Apple's pro line of computers is not on price-par with everything else.

The MacBook is a great deal, but it's still $300-400 more than a comparative E1405.

The misnomer comes in because Dell offers (because they sell a lot more computers and are therefore able) a HUGE range of low/mid/high end computers.

So, yes, you can get a $400 PC from Dell. But would you want to?

Me? No. But many, MANY people would. Those "Best Week Ever" spoofs actually had some validity. Apple targets people with money, no doubt. People that don't have the kind of money for a [nice] expensive laptop would love a Dell.

a 17" dell speced up to be as identical as possible to a MBP costs 40 quid more than a 17" MBP.

My favourite response to that is "yeah, its a bit of a pain having to issue commands to the processor by machine code instead of the usual windows interface, but its fun once you get used to it"

I like the confused look that people get when i say that.

I have no idea what quid is... but did you have a $750 off $2000 coupon? Try applying one of those. They pop up all the time on Dell.

Even without the coupon, I just specced an E1705 w/ 2GB of RAM (up from 1GB on the MBP), extended life battery, and Geforce Go 7900 at $2192. All else was equal or comparable to the 17" MBP. That's $600 less! Add the $750 off coupon and it's $1350 less! Granted, apply Apple's education discount and you're at ~$1050 less.

But -please- don't say Apple design doesn't come at a premium ;)

Still here.
What difference does it make, really? If someone thinks Mac's are overpriced or whatever ignorant ******** the media has successfully led them to believe, sucks for them. I'm not going to let it become my problem. In fact, I tell everyone who asks that Mac's suck and the only thing I would recommend buying from Apple are iPods, and even then they are a rip-off.

Of course, I don't actually believe this, I'm just tired of trying to explain to people the advantage of owning a Mac over a PC. If they can't figure it out for themselves, they deserve a PC, IMO. :D
