I tried building a Dell 17" laptop that would spec out in the neighborhood of the 17" MBP. One ended up being about ~$1000 MORE (but had a much fatter video card) and one ended up being ~$300 LESS (but had a slightly less fat video card and less bells & whistles).

Ultimately, IMO, if you build a similar spec computer from more LARGE manufacturers, the price will end up about the same. So I just don't buy the argument. Again, as I said before, it's because the huge RANGE of machines that large manufacturers offer that gets Apple. I mean Dell offers like 8 or 10 different base laptop models. With that, anyone can find anything they want for the price they want.

As time hurtles into the future, the gaps between OS X & Windows and "PC" and "Mac" narrows more and more. I am interested to see what Vista brings to the table.

As far as haters on both side of the table are concerned, I simply assume that they don't know what they're talking about because they haven't informed themselves about all the issues at stake.

"Macs don't run games"
Ah, yes. Some of my favorite Windows-only titles were classics like "Hunt the Virus" and "Zap the Bloatware". You can't forget, "Malware: The Infinite" which was one of the most difficult games I've ever played. What times I had with my Windows machine. It has the current duty of ensuring that gravity still works.

There is something quite telling about the fact that OS X comes with chess, while the standard offerings in XP are solitare and pinball.

I know what you mean, but I typically enjoy them.
PC user: "Macs suck...you can't do anything on them at all. They are for newbs.."
Me: "Why do you say that? I play WoW, edit photos, make websites, and do my homework on mine."
PC User: "Wow - you do your homework? What is that...typing in Word? Windows does that too. What's your major?"
Me: "Computer science."
Pc User: "Oh......"
Heh, I know what you're saying, I get the same thing. The PC user assumes that since I know a lot about computers, I must hate Macs. But why the hell should I have to reboot to enter a Unix environment?

Quoting vv-tim "The MacBook is a great deal, but it's still $300-400 more than a comparative E1405"

And the 1405 is a half inch thicker than the Macbook. You always get more with a Dell :D

I would just secretly tell them to instead buy a mac. Don't trick innocent people into useing the devils equipment!!!!!!!!!!!!! Stupid microsoft:mad:
Can you please defend this statement.
note* i want to see if dextertengocci individually can conduct a valid reasoning behind the comment.

To josh, im a comp sci major as well, im just curious what c compiler you use? is xcode the weapon of choice for mac?

Then you will be glad to see some recent pictures from Vista...

Looks like Windows is doing quite well :D

Heh..

In all seriousness, I'll reserve my initial judgement on Vista for after release (Windows2010, anyone?) and revised judgement for after the first Service Pack.

Unless you're speccing this computer from some random-foreign dell site, you must be retarded.

I already specced the computer out with better specs than the 17" MBP (other than in terms of size/design) and it came out far less. Give me some links to the base config that you specced out.

My guess is you're one of those people that adds on Microsoft Office and Virus Scanners and all this other crap because "Mac OS X comes with all that blah blah blah".

Please don't impugn my intelligence, I don't appreciate it.

As for the bells and whistles, some of them DO get added, because the Mac comes with them. Such as the Dell equiv of iLife. How could you NOT add that and call them equivalent?

As for which models I was comparing, the XPS M1710 via the EDU site & the Inspiron 9400 via the HealthCare site.

Hehe, that was my expectation as well.

At least it looks right in FireFox. Check out how it pans out in Safari:

meh, who cares, are you happy with your macs? do they get the work done that you need?
then who cares if windows users are also happy with their machines? Really, it's not the end of the world.

Of course you pay premium for design. Why shouldn't you? Why does anyone expect you don't have to? You pay premium for design with EVERY product, be it cars, motorcycles, furniture, WHATEVER. Why does anyone expect this to be different for computers?

I think this should be stickied.
