I don't mean to be snooty but I'm glad i returned my ipad 4 and kept my perfect (but really hard to get) good DY serial iPad screen that I suspect is Sharp. No IR, no multiple color hue. It's a beauty.

Sounds like iOS 7 fixes the issue, so it might be a moot point soon, anyway.

I have been noticing this on my ipad for a very long time. But I thought it was because I have subtitles on all the time and it seemed to only happen when the subtitles were on the screen And thought that maybe the subtitles were using some sort of overlay that was affecting the whole screen including the black bars. So I've been living with it. But then I started noticing it when I didn't have the subtitles on and in a few videos it was extremely bad! Ialso own an iPad 3 that I don't watch movies on. I decided to test it to see if the same thing occurred and much to my surprise it did NOT. The ipad 3 I have does not vary its brightness. It began to make me think something was wrong with my ipad 4. Then I found this thread and I'm glad I'm not alone. I really hope it's fixed in iOS 7.

If you want to see it really easily, just find a black screen in a video like at the end of the movie when there's nothing on the screen at all except black. Then touch the screen to bring up the interface. The screen will brighten up and get all washed out. Then hide the interface and you'll notice the screen gets dark and less washed out. If you go immediately back to the home screen when it is very dark all your icons will have very little color in them and look washed out.

Actually even better to demonstrate is an Apple trailer, for the screen is black except for the little apple in the corner. Then you can really see that Apple icon pumping up and down in brightness as you show and hide the interface. It takes about 10 seconds to ramp back and forth. Get in a dark room and turn up the ipad 4 brightness all the way up to see it best.

Sometimes the pumping in Gamma and brightness is really intense. Other times it's hardly noticeable.

But like I said I own both an iPad 3 and an iPad 4 and this doesn't happen at all on the iPad 3.

So I got the iPad Air, which runs iOS 7, of course. I do a slight contrast shift during videos in Plex, but it's rarely noticeable and nothing AT ALL like what I was seeing on the iPad 4 with iOS 6.

So for those wondering, you're safe with iOS 7 + iPad Air.

No contrast pumping issues with iOS 7 and my iPad 4. :D

Get it replaced!

Not resolved with iOS 7 on my iPad 4th gen. Still have fluctuations when watching videos in most apps.

I had this problem with iOS 6 on my iPad 4 but it has since disappeared after a wipe and DFU restore to to iOS 7. IDK how many others are still having this issue since iOS 7 but if it's still widespread then I would push for a replacement while you still can.

I've tested it on two of my 4th gens...

Well, that's an interesting set of responses. :(

and it is no longer an issue. I was more than familiar with this on iOS 6 so I know exactly what people are speaking of. Maybe some units are more susceptible to the issue or there could be something to the process by which individuals choose the update to iOS 7?

I myself choose to do a complete wipe of the device, setup as new and then put the device into DFU mode and install a fresh download of the IPSW from Apple. I am not a fan of upgrading over the air or not by the process as stated above. Just my personal preference.

Still there on lot of the latest units as of December/2013

The issue still seems to be there on many of the most recent Apple Hardware/Software. I tested displayed units at a Verizon store (with this video), seeing the "wash out effect on pause", as follows:

These display models had the issue (all on iOS 7.x):
  • iPhone 5S
  • iPad 4
  • iPad Air
These did not have the issue (All on iOS 6.x, except for the iPhone 5c which was iOS 7.x):
  • iPhone 5c
  • iPhone 4s
  • iPad Mini

The only reason I went looking/testing for this is because at the lowest brightness setting I was noticing these brightness/contrast fluctuations that made watching many of the videos I had pretty annoying (using Apple's Video Player on my new iPhone 5s. My iPod touch 4G and 5G never had this problem). I guess the solution is to use a different App (VLC, etc.) that does not exhibit the problem. (Not that I buy videos from the iTunes store, but will definitely avoid it now :))

Hello all, first post. I bought my first ipad, in fact my first ever apple product last week. Best Buy had their Black Friday sale with $50 off the Air. Got the 16gb wifi version.

When I got home and booted it up for the first time I immediately noticed a dark edge along the left side, as well as a color shift from warm on the left to a cooler temp on the right. I waited nearly a week before I returned to BB for an exchange. The guy at the counter said he not could tell a difference but there was a clearly a effect. He called over his supervisor and she immediately noticed the color temp difference, and noticed the shadow after I pointed it out to her.

They came back with 5 or so boxes of Airs to test out. 4 I tried all had varying degrees of discoloration and the shadow/book spine effect. Finally I found one that had minimal defects. The one I have has a very slight color temp variation but it's a far better version than the Air I originally bought. Btw my original Air had serial: DMPLF. My current Air is DMPLG. Don't know if serial numbers really help much.

So yes, there is definitely a problem with certain batches of Airs. Gotta say I had zero complaints of my "cheap" Nexus 7 display. It was excellent, not a single problem for a tablet that costs less that half what an Air costs. I like ios7 compared to Android and the apps etc, but I expected a lot more out of what's supposed to be the premier tablet from the premier brand. No excuse to have a these problems on a $500 tablet.

I hope the Air2 will have these issues resolved. Display issues aside I love the air. Ok, the speaker sucks (compared to the N7 there's no contest. The N7 is light years ahead.), but I really like everything else.

The Nexus 7 sound is indeed better, but at low volume there's awful static through them, a problem that affects every single N7 2013 out there, including my two that I owned. I'm glad I'm rid of them.

I agree there's no excuse for a $500 device to exhibit issues such as the ones you're experiencing. My personal (first) iPad Air has very minor color shift, and no dark spine effect as reported in other threads.

Anyway, this isn't the thread for this discussion, - I'd suggest taking it to some of the other threads. This thread is for an issue that's much, much older. :)

I just got a refurb ipad 4 from Walmart.com it came with iOS 7.02 on it. Not sure if thefactory installed it or the refurb company. But I did the dark knight test on trailor 4 a few times and it doesnt dim or pulsate. I do have minimal lite bleed on one Side but it's no big deal.
