So I'm assuming Apple have pretty much closed this case, saying they can't reproduce the issue. Am I correct?

I actually noticed this problem when I was reading in a bed a couple weeks ago. I had the night theme on in iBooks and after about 10 minutes or so the screen got a weird brighter haze.

I have the exact same issue on my iPad 3 (launch day model). I only noticed it relatively recently (and before reading this thread) and I don't remember noticing anything like that in the first 10 months+ of use. Maybe it started after a software update?

The issue is very obvious and reproducible on my end. Unfortunately my warranty just expired in March :(

Did anyone try to figure out the actual technical issue? Is there a API (public or hidden) that controls if and how dynamic contrast is applied?

Edit: Weird, the 480p version of a video I was just watching does not trigger the issue (but the 720p version did)

This issue is supposed to only occur on the ipad 4.

Now you have thrown another twist into the tale.

I found at least another case of an iPad 3 having the same issue, here's an Youtube video showing the problem:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HC3KAm0kpm0

It's weird that in my case it doesn't happen in 480p, and trust me it's not the 720p video that has brightness problems. As other said in this thread, the problem does not occur in some apps so I think it may be a combination of a hardware/software issue. Some video modes don't seem to enable the hardware dynamic contrast feature, which in itself might be broken on some machine.

It may also have to do with factory calibration settings that are stored somewhere in the iPad.

i used the same methods as suggested in this thread to show the display flaw, and i am unable to reproduce it with my iPad 3.

i used to have an iPad 4 that i could replicate it with.

I must admit that after doing the test with the Batman video I can't reproduce the same issue with "messed up" icons, though the brightness does fluctuate thorough the video.

So I guess it's a separate issue that I'm having with dynamic contrast on my iPad 3.

The effect is very noticeable on some videos (especially those with black bars) and I'm sure it's not in the source video as I don't have this problem viewing the same videos on my Mac.

I'll try to find a specific example that you can try on your iPad 3.

I've noticed the same annoying dynamic contrast (brightness fluctuation) in videos with my ipad 3. It's definitely distracting and can even be jarring if watching the tablet in a dark room.

I'm sorry but that just looks like the screen is auto adjusting. Set the light sensor from auto to max and you probably won't see the problem at all.

Hi everyone,

I'm new here and just wanted to pass along a few issues I have with my iPad4 that are the same as others are having. I got my iPad back around the first of March and until recently not watched any movies. Since installing 2 movies that I had first being the movie Lincoln I noticed from the start of the movie the contrast changes in dark scenes. This movie was being played in wide screen form and it shows up quickly. The other movie being the Road to Perdition is full screen and also has the same problem. So at least from what I have read on here this can be seem in other forms besides full screen.
It was only out of curiousness that I Googled this problem that brought me to this posting. Good luck to all and crossing my fingers that someone @ Apple will do something to fix this problem.

Welcome!

To clear up some confusion, by "full screen" we don't mean non-widescreen. We mean maximized. Some TV is widescreen, and some is 4:3. Either way, if the video is maximized (i.e. not embedded in a browser for example), this issue occurs.

To update:

I haven't heard back from Apple. It does sort-of (read: really) feel like they don't care. It's a shame, really.

William G,
Thanks for the welcome and as you I agree it is a shame that a company such as Apple falls short when it comes to taking care of known problems. I hope that some how things get worked out before they loose customers of which not even Apple can stand the loss to get out of hand. If the news about the cheap labor in china had little to no effect on taking corrective action, I hold out little hope when it comes to our problem.

I've been following this thread closely and I'm astounded that apple still have not fixed this... I'm also disappointed how few people seem to notice this, aside from this thread there is very little else on the Internet regarding this, and I'm almost certain this can be reproduced on every single ipad 4. I am however interested if there is anyone with an ipad bought in the last month or two who notices this?

Also, I never owned an ipad 2, but I'm curious if this problem is similiar to the contrast issue they faced, which wasn't fixed until iOS 5. https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1125441/

Yesterday I finally was able to see it during an episode of Lost. Fixed it by lowering the brightness below 50% - was too bright anyway in the dark.

It clearly showed the "pumping" you guys talk about.

Here's why:

Lol, well played :D

I can only hope that out of the thousands that own the latest gen ipad, and aside from the handful on this thread, they are all on the phone or flocking to their nearest apple store in an attempt to get this resolved.....or not.

Just reading the comments on this thread from those that adamantly claim their devices are perfect disappoints me. How I wish I could also be so blissfully unaware, instead I'll remain resigned to the fact that I'm too damned observant...

I have the icon contrast issue when Play movies that I uploaded in dropbox in widescreen instead of full screen - when I double tap for task bar or hit home - the contract has to adjust.

Just because you had an issue with your iPad and other people claim to not have the same issue doesn't mean all iPads are the same. So please don't generalize on something you don't know.

the 2 posters on this page that are really concerned have only posted in this thread and are very passionate about the subject. I'm not going to point any fingers here, but it does seems like someone is trying to make this non-issue into something bigger.

AddisonII and redsparro thanks for joining the discussion.

I'm sorry, but I think it's fair to generalise in this instance. This is a very real flaw, and if you dnt see it, good for you, I wish I was in your position. As has been pointed out, it's people that fail to notice this that mean the issue will likely never be resolved. There are enough people in this thread, from varying locations around the world, many (myself included) having received multiple replacements from apple with each showing the same fault. You're always going to get individuals that don't use the ipad in the same way or surroundings as someone else, and will therefore never notice this....but don't pass this off as a problem with a select number of iPad 4's, because it's not.

And pat park - nice conspiracy theory and detective work. I created this account solely to throw in my two cents worth. So don't fret, no foul play at work here :D

I find!!!

Hello everyone! I live in Russia. I use iPad 4 from the middle of winter. From the first days of use encountered the following problems. :mad:There are small blue glare on the edges, and the screen loses contrast when viewing videos. The first problem is solved by replacing the screen, and the second is the solution I have just found. We know very well what color returned to normal only when we turn off the video, or open additional interface elements on the screen. :)The solution is to post a always on the top bar with the clock, when you watch the video. To do this, you must install the tweak "ForceStatusBar" from cydia. I hope this help. Sorry for my bad English. Good luck!:D
