Every year for the past 5 years, whether I'm eligible for an upgrade or not, I buy the brand new iPhone. It's become kind of a personal Christmas-in-September for me. About 2 weeks before the new phones are unveiled, I jump over to an older phone so I can sell my current model. It was no different this year; I re-activated an old 5S and got my matte black 7 Plus boxed up and ready to sell. I love all of the hype beforehand, the Apple event, the pre-order, waiting on delivery, unboxing my new toy, and enjoying the "honeymoon phase" for the next two months. I live for this stuff.

Until this year. Everything was on pace to unfold like any other year. I followed along with the rumor mill and patiently awaited for the Apple event...but before I knew it, the event was over and I was left feeling completely underwhelmed. Of the lineup they announced, there is not one device that I'm yearning for.

Where should I begin? I guess I'll start with the price tag of the base model iPhone X: $1000. For that price, you can buy a MacBook! Maybe I could look past the price tag if it weren't for the ugly black notch at the top of the device, the lack of home button/Touch ID (which, in my opinion, is the most natural and efficient form of device security), and the lack of 128GB option. 64GB isn't enough for me, so I'd have to spend $1149 on 256GB. (Sidebar: this might be what aggravates me the most. It's a sales tactic that Apple has deployed for years: take away the middle-of-the-road storage option and force those buyers to either upgrade their storage or downgrade their storage. Most will choose to upgrade and spend the extra cash. Ironically, it hasn't really bothered me until this year - the year Apple priced their flagship phone at and above $1000.)

Having said all of the above, maybe I should just go for the iPhone 8 or 8 Plus. Well, not the 8 Plus...I really wanted to downsize this year. Okay - so the iPhone 8! What new features will I get?? A glass back...a faster chip...a slightly nicer screen...and wireless charging. Well, I'll get wireless charging if I want to spend the extra cash on a Qi charger. I won't get portrait mode since that's still only dedicated to the Plus model phones. And, lest we forget, in order for me to get the appropriate amount of storage, looks like I'll have to drop $849 on the 256GB model.

Although, I have kind of been enjoying the use of my old iPhone 5S. Speed aside, it's a great little phone (keyword: little). Man, if they offered this with an upgraded camera and some faster hardware, I might actually consider it. ***DING, DING, DING!*** The iPhone SE. I almost forgot about the iPhone SE. A souped up iPhone 5S! Feels great in the hand, fits right in my pocket, easy to handle, and...COMES IN 128GB?! Wait, am I about to go COMPLETELY rogue???

YUP. I went rogue. As of an hour ago, I ordered a 128GB Space Grey iPhone SE. It arrives tomorrow and I'm actually quite excited about it. While most of you may think that I took a major step back, I kind of feel the opposite. The iPhone SE feels like 'ol trusty. It's the last of what was a great breed of iPhone - the last sign of Steve Jobs. It's fast enough to compete with today's standards, it embodies the ergonomic form factor, it packs a 12MP camera, has Touch ID, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. As much as I didn't want to admit it, the annoyance of not being able to charge AND be plugged into a speaker or have wired headphones in posed an issue more than I had hoped. The iPhone SE will do exactly what I need it to do...and it'll do it for $449. I'm going back to the basics for a while and I'm hoping Apple will do the same.[/QUOTE

I agree with what you did. I bought a iPhone SE after the new iPhones came out. I can’t afford to spend a 1000 for a iPhone and I hate Android phones. I sold my iPhone 7 Plus and bought the SE and I am thrilled that I did. It was too bulky to carry in my pocket and I don’t carry a purse. I also like having a headphone jack!

I'm on the verge of buying an SE after going through 5 iPhone 8s - I've had different problems including a gap on the back big enough to insert a piece of paper, scratches out of the box, missing chip of paint under the front glass and excess sealant at the back that sticks out, none of which I could or should put up with. I have one more exchange on its way, but if it's still unacceptable afterwards, I'll be getting the SE. Although I prefer the 8's rounded form factor, it's not worth the hassle and I feel that the quality is not synonymous with the price premium.

I did the same i await my SE which is backordered a couple weeks wonder if Apple is seeing increased demand here? I only got my 7plus with the intention of going to the X, but after seeing the price, i came to the conclusion i wanted to take a step back in price and the SE can do everything i was doing on my 7 plus, plus be a bit more hand friendly

My SE is up and running! I feel like I don't want to put it in a case..it just feels so good in my hand. But, I do know that's playing with fire. Hahah. This thing is a speedy little demon. I feel right at home on it. Thrilled with my decision thus far.
I was going to do the same but i don't want the back to get scratched up so i ordered a symmetry otterbox case, one of the thinner otterboxes but still protective

And after that whole speech complaining about Apple, you went ahead and bought an Apple product from them at full price. Due to the refinement of parts and processes, the profit margin on iPhone SE's are likely to be very comparable, if not more than the iPhone X. Remember, Samsung makes a huge chunk of money off of every iPhone X sold, as well as the fact that all of the components are quite expensive.

If you think your decision to not purchase the X, but rather purchase a lesser Apple device, will do anything other than line Apple's pockets with your money, you are mistaken. There is no changing Apple and their decision-making. They will do what they want to do, when they want to do it. That started being the case as soon as consumers gave up and allowed Apple to tell us what we want, rather than us telling them what we want.

People make all kinds of boycotting comments in the hopes that Apple will change their ways, but it is a delusional pipe dream. I just don't know what the OP's post was meant to accomplish. All I got from it is that the iPhone SE is not a bad option for those who need to watch their wallet and still live in the Apple ecosystem. Also, OP is financially sensitive given that an extra $300 price increase has eliminated a 5 year ritual.

I have an SE, 8, and 7 plus. I am getting ready to switch to the X for my 7 plus. The SE is a great phone... but it ins't the phone I want to use full time. I want the better camera etc in the X. The zoom is important to me. I also have a lot more trouble texting on the SE. I bought it to be a hot spot when ATT didn't offer hot spot with unlimited. It was perfect for that because it is small. I really need to remember to sell it now.

You're missing the point. It's not about the extra $300. It's about the fact that the baseline iPhone X costs $1000..and for that $1000, you only get 64GB of storage. Apple is blatantly taking advantage of their customers at this point. Aside from "Face ID" (which, I for one, am NOT excited about), what's so groundbreaking about the iPhone X? Wireless charging? Not groundbreaking, will require additional accessories. What else? What other features are you blown away by? The ugly notch? Please, elaborate. What makes this phone worth $1000? I'd rather buy a new MacBook.

Yes, Apple will continue to do what they want to do...but at some point, so will the endusers. This is that point for me and I hope for others as well. The hope is that they get the message through their internal sales reports. We all know they'd never go public with those numbers. What's the message? Simple: the pricing has become outrageous and you're not offering a product worth dropping that kind of cash. A certain level of risk also comes with owning an iPhone X. The more expensive the device, the more expensive the repairs, the more expensive the insurance.

My point was not to teach Apple a lesson by preventing them profits, but more to show them and others that someone who has upgraded every year on launch day is no longer doing so. In fact, I opted for their baseline iPhone..which does exactly what I want it to do at the speed I want it to be done and at a fair price. Re-read my initial post, I explain all of it there.

My post was meant to let likeminded others know that they aren't alone in their thinking. That another yearly upgrader is jumping ship. From the looks of it, I accomplished just that...17 pages worth of it.

The Iphone X is Faster than the SE, but the SE has a Lesser screen so it makes up for it, plus there's no App the X can run that the SE can't, and for me thats the bottom line I can check all the boxes, everything i need to do with a Phone I can do with the SE, while the Screen is better on the X its not $600 better for me. Like the Mac Mini I think Apple alays needs to offer a good introductory Phone and the SE is that, maybe once the X form factor becomes the defacto norm, than maybe the Iphone 6,7 or 8 form factor will become entry level, we'll see I hope so

Ended up not preordering the X after some contemplation. My SE is running perfectly and is just a beautiful form factor. Since I paid $129 I’m going to pocket the $870 and wait and see. I think I can get an the year out of this amazing SE.

I hope not. That physical design needs to be revised down. There is a lot of fat in it that cheapens it. It will not be able to compete in 2018 and 2019. Hence the appeal of the SE.

I too have an SE because I love the form factor.
It is nice and light and slips in my pocket very easily.
Does all the things I need it to do with enough speed.
Best of all is that I get nearly two days on one charge and I use my phone at work throughout the day.

I bought the 6 at launch and wasn’t keen on the size, as it felt awkward and a bit too big.
I stuck it out for two years, and then purchased an SE when the 7 was launched.

Last week, I had the opportunity to get a brand new SIM free 7 (128) or 8 (64) with 20% staff discount and a further £40 off.

In the end I opted for a matte black 7 (128) for £470.
I could easily get £200+ for my year old SE (64).

Two days later, I had to return my bargain purchase for a refund.

The screen was much better than my SE, but the battery life was worse and I couldn’t get to grips with the size and extra weight.
Apart from that, I didn’t see any more benefits that owning the 7 had for me over my SE.

I prefer a compact phone, decent battery and fast enough to regular smartphone stuff.
I don’t game and the camera just needs be good enough, not amazing.
The SE serves my needs very well.

I would hope that Apple continues to provide a phone that meets this criteria.
I don’t need a phablet (plus) as I have a Mini 4 and a MacBook.

None of my reasons for owning an SE have anything to do with budget restrictions.
IMHO Apple’s cheapest phone is my favourite.

It's a bigger and better screen in the 6/7/8, but that's almost where the benefits end.

None of my reasons for owning an SE have anything to do with budget restrictions.

Nope, I was fine with a AUD$79 (USD$60) carrier plan to get the iPhone 8 256GB. The AUD$45 (USD$35) plan I'm now on for the SE 128GB is just a nice bonus. (128GB is enormous coming from 32GB and 16GB).

Same here.

Apple's cheapest offerings with the MacBooks and iPhones are my favorites.

Air & SE: Cheap and reliable. Still has all the ports and still a timeless design.

The newer stuff feels like newer Star Wars films from Disney when the George Lucas' Original Trilogy and Steve Jobs-era ones will always be my favs. They had a certain magic they had that will never be recaptured.

By crappy camera you mean 12MP? Haha

The camera could be 41mp and still be pretty mediocre (I’m looking at you, Nokia 1020).

The lens quality and software play a massive role in camera quality, and Megapixles are only part of that equation.

SE camera isn’t terrible, though. As a photographer, it’s definitely a noticeable notch down on the scale these days though.

I could only hope we get an updated se next year with a nearly bezelless screen which will bump up the screen size a bit. They will most likely keep the home button and give it the iPhone 7 internals, however I wouldn’t mind 3GB of RAM. One can dream

I'm hopeful about the SE. The fact it has sold so well and been relatively popular within a niche of users makes me optimistic that it turned some eyes, at least to the level of "we should keep spec bumping it" if not bring out a new model that fits that physical size range.

It's interesting to me that something like the X comes along and, like the 7/6s/6 before it, I simply don't bat an eye at it due to the physical size.

I really hope Apple appreciates that they have loyal customers who are turned off by the current phones by one simple factor - physical size. Literally none of the X features do anything for me if we start the conversation at that physical size.

Please keep making small phones and many of us will keep buying them. We just are different and do different/less things with our phones and the smaller ones beautifully mate up with how we use them.

Didn’t want to quote the entire OP, but while I don’t agree with most of your analysis and I think you are justifying your “settling” option in the iPhone SE, the points you brought up and thought process you’ve went through are rational and I see exactly where you are coming from. Cheers to the new iPhone!

Settling for it because she was not able to get the new phones? Nope, the new phones are there for the taking, as every year. The SE suited her situation and it suits mine. No, there is not much about the new models to get you to buy unless you are stuck for a phone or have old junk and really want a bigger one, or want superlative photographic quality.

The SE is simply the best smaller phone available, at least in my country. It's smaller that I prefer rather than settle for.
