The iPad is barely two month old, but the new iPhone has 2x the amount of RAM and the same chip (albeit possibly underclocked). Has this bothered anyone else? I know that technology is constantly being outdated, but months ago when the iPad launched they knew that the new iPhone would have 512 MB of Ram.

This really grinds my gears.

Welcome to the wonderful world of apple! Please enjoy your stay, and buy the second gen iPad when it comes out around christmas ;)

I know its a little annoying, however look at it this way. The iPhone will have a underclocked A4 cpu (this is obvious because if it was the 1ghz the ipad is they would have mentioned it plus they need to save energy)

You will see more performance in the cpu being at a higher clock than you will with more ram. The only thing the ram will do is make multitasking slightly better.

I would like iMovie on the ipad or garageband (garageband would be awwwwesome on the ipad) I know people will say why imovie.. theres no camera... but if you could import your vid clips in and edit it would be prettyyyyyyyy coooool.

It doesn't bother me in the same way it doesn't bother me that the i7 imac has better spec than the i7 MBP. They're different products.

Doubt we'll see a new to iPad till next May or so, it'd make no sense economically while they're still flying puff shelves.

Edit: flying OFF shelves, best error correction evah!

Apple provides just enough specs for a particular model to handle its originally designed purpose and no more. They don't future proof their mobile devices much--so you'll keep upgrading every 2 or three years. When the next iPad comes out, Im sure it will also be missing a key feature that the following iPhone will have. :)

Until you learn to judge products by what they do for you rather than numbers on a spec sheet, you will be doomed to continual gear replacement.

This. I've had my 3G for 2 years, it still works admirably and will for another year*.

My 1st gen unibody mbp has been utterly eclipsed in specs, but it'll do everything I want for another couple of years.

*In the hands of the mate Im selling it too, iPhone IV baby!

Remember the while iPhone 4 leaked from a bar? Apple was forced to push to move the released date ahead because of this. Maybe the original plan was to have the iPhone 4 released in the fall, and new iPad around Christmas. Anyway, enjoy your iPad as it is. You don't need the retina display on the iPad as it is not meant toe held less than 1 foot away from your eyes. As for the ram... Yes, the iPad can benefit from it, but it is a never ending race when it comes to speed in the computer world.

Iphones are always released around this time of year. There is no evidence that the iPhone release date has been changed at all, and I personally don't think that it was. There is also no way to know yet when the next iPad will be released.

Yeah, anyone could have told you 9 months ago that the next iPhone would be June/July. Was this ever in doubt?

As for a new iPad, it's absolutely crazy to think one will appear before 2nd quarter next year. Everything points towards the iPad having an iphone like cycle for the sake of not fragmenting the app market, from which Apple clearly make a killing. Much like the 1st gen iPhone, this iPad will only show it's age software wise when the 3rd gen appears and loads of OS features aren't compatible.

You need to remember that the iPhone is Apple's mobile flagship device.
The iPod Touch & iPad won't get new standard features until the iPhone gets it.

So you would be happier if the iPhone 4 had less memory and an older processor? Why?

Here's the recipe for happiness: Look at the things you've got, and be happy with them. And if someone you like has something, then be happy for them. If someone you don't like has something, then don't let it bother you.

Here's the recipe for unhappiness: Concentrate not on the things you have got, but on the things you haven't got, and let every single bit that you haven't got annoy you, plus let everything that someone else got annoy you as well.

I'm mostly good with it. I waited and got the iPad 3g to avoid all the remorse posted by WIFI only users. I am a bit surprised that the iPhone will have 512Mb memory on board. They must have had them in supply a month ago and could have put them in the 3G iPad to help justify the extra cost but they did what they did.
The lesson here is next year don't jump on the newest iPad untill you know what the next iPhone will have and then decide if the upgrade is worth it.

You are comparing Apples to Oranges. Uhmm.... Check that. You are comparing a Granny Smith to a Golden Delicious.

To complete different iDevices. And I'm going to leave it at that cuz I'm so tired of people posting threads like this. It's like train wrek. You can't help but look.

im pretty sure the ipad will be able to do everything the iphone 4 can without being that much slower. love my ipad.

+1^
They are in different leagues,i don't know why some users compare an iPhone with iPad.

The RAM I'm not too bothered about, my iPad is fast. it runs everything I want it to. But I wish they had put the gyro in the iPad. A lot of games will be developed to use the gyro, and they simply wont run on the iPad with it missing.

My iPad is fast. It's a joy to use. I don't really care about the actual tech specs. That's the beauty of Apple products, I forget all about the science behind the product as soon as I start using it.

So what if the new iPhone has 512 MB; I can tell you now, I'll keep my "old" iPhone 3G (gasp, it's not even a 3GS!) as I'm happy with it, even if O2 are offering me an upgrade.

End of the day, 512 is just a number.
