I'm insanely obsessive compulsive about build quality and defects. My iPhone X has a very audible cracking / popping sound when I press with some force on the center of the screen. Simply taking my case on and off causes it as well. I've read posts about others having the same issue. I had a genius inspect it and was told it was normal (of course it isn't) and he couldn't hear it (of course he couldn't). My screen is flawless so I kept it. I've returned, exchanged, and sold in total about 10 iPhone X units. I have never in my life seen such variance in quality and unacceptable screen defects. Not defending Android at all. It took three Pixel 2 XLs before I got a flawless one. But the iPhone X, to me, has been a hot mess of a phone.
I think you are probably using it wrong as you heard it is "Normal" /s
Anyway, I agree with you nothing is perfect and there will always be issues when it comes to hardware & software, sometimes more than what we want. Still trying to forget the Pixel 2 issues...

That has to be a personal problem/issue. I am sure you have valid concerns here, but I for example, have never had to return any iPhone since the original. I can't just be lucky right? Considering the X is "a hot mess of a phone". The millions of happy customers would say otherwise.

You exchanged/return 10 iPhones? That’s seems a bit extreme and I don’t think I ever heard of anyone going through that many iPhones with defects. I’m not saying I don’t believe you, but I can’t understand how someone has 10 total defective iPhones in a Row. Also, You’re likely flagged in their system for denial for return/exchanges in the future.

Yeah I am still on X number 1...

I'll go ahead and say it at the risk of getting flamed by the haters... --> I do not believe that for one second! I mean it's the internet and all where fantasy often is translated into reality... :p

I wasn't saying in general the phone is a hot mess. For me it has been.

Totally on top of that. I haven't returned / exchanged 10 because I don't want to be banned. I ended up swapping 3 of them upon genius confirmation that the screens were really bad. Flat out returned another two I think that had piss yellow or pink hue. Another 1 had dust under the lens, verified by genius. Another one I just returned due to terrible pink shift upon slight movement. Sales person saw it and agreed. I sold 2 iPhones that were borderline and didn't want to exchange. Each time I exchanged / returned I spoke with store manager to kindly explain my issues and told him / her my issues. They have never given me a hard time and assured me I am not banned. So I think it is case by case and how you present yourself / interact with people.

Yeah. I don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings or anything, but I find it hard to believe someone had 3 defective units in a row, let alone 10. And yet, this forum is full of these stories.

You definitely are not alone in this. It's almost a factor of pride for these people. I do know it gets a lot of attention.

Not exaggerating at all, feelings not hurt, couldn't care less about "internet pride." Believe what you want, I'm simply stating my experience. If Apple wants to ban me fine. As I said, I've discussed with managers when there and have told them to please stop allowing me to exchange if you feel I'm abusing anything. They laughed and said of course not. I know I'm in the extreme minority, not disagreeing with any of you who call me nuts, lol. I'm slowly learning to just accept gadgets that aren't perfect and just calling it a day. :)

A+++ for being honest about it.... But you do know those excessive return costs are passed on to the rest of us right?

I respectfully disagree. Each time I've exchanged / returned has been for what I felt (and geniuses almost always confirmed) were legit issues. I have held onto / am happy with my current and final X despite the audible popping noise. See, progress!

This isn't the same as wanting to try out the phone just because, and then return it. Remember how many of these posts there were when the X launched? I would never drop my phone on purpose and then take it in to get replaced under AppleCare+. I've read countless posts here where people bought the phone, scratched it, and returned it for a new one since they were within the return period. You can't throw me into that category, that's abuse in my mind. The iPhone X doesn't cost $1000 because of returns. It costs $1000 because of shareholders / profit margins. Skyrocketing cell phone prices as a whole are not due to people returning / exchanging.

Disagree... Prices for the device are calculated using numerous different things. Overhead is one of them. There is significant overhead associated with 10 returns. The reps at the store, the refurbishing process, shipping the phones to the store, shipping the phone to the refurbished center ect, ect, ect...

Fair enough, not trying to argue. But I didn't return 10. I just checked my history and I sold 3 of them because they were borderline and would've felt bad returning. Not that 7 makes it any better in the court of public opinion, lol.

True, so instead of hating you A TON, we just hate you little less than a ton. :) (kidding fyi).

At least you're honest about it - I can understand spending $1000+ on a device and wanting it to be near perfect. I've never had to return more than once. Yeah, not all of them are perfect but they're pretty close - enough for me to use for a few years before selling it back to Apple.

In regards to iPhone X returns…I'll just remind everyone about the endless threads of people going through 9 or more iPhone 5 boxes in-store when Apple launched that phone.

I have yet to see anything approach the retail armageddon that was Scuffgate.

You're embarrassing yourself.. I know plenty of tech people with iPhones. One has a pHD in computer science and teaches at a major So. Cal university. I suppose he is a low tech person in your opinion as well?

Please do share your technical skill level with us all since you've chosen to make such absurd statements..

No, you continue to do that. I am sorry if you don't like the facts, but I work in IT, and have worked it for 25 years. Most IT people use Android unless they are forced to use an iPhone due to company policy. They prefer customization and can handle Android more as it requires more skill than an iPhone does to learn them.

I think sometimes part of the problem is that Apple has such high expectations with product build, that consumers expect their products to be absolutely perfect given the all amount of money they spend. The Issue is, anything mass-produced on the level of 200 million iPhones annually, it’s absolutely impossible for a product to be perfect virtually throughout.

Thanks for the laughs..

Of the past 4 phones I've owned it's been been split between both platforms. The iOS people seem far more obsessed with how their phone makes them feel than Android. Right now I've got a Sammy 8+ but could very well buy the X+ next fall (assuming there is a plus size). Apple better watch pricing though because it's getting a bit over the top vs. Android. I could very well stick with Android for that reason.

I've exchanged an iPad Air (1) 7 times. 3 was because I wanted a bigger capacity and 4 times was because of defects with dust under the screen already. Ended up taking one that was the least offensive.

Stores keep lists of customers with history of abusing and excessive high returns. Sounds like we have one here.
Sounds like we have someone who wasn't happy with their $1000 phone either. Return till you're happy. It's not the customers fault Apple QC blows.

Cause nobody here wouldn't exchange their phone until it was perfect or close to it. Sorry if the device is over $200 I want a good device without a defect
