Oops I mean’t Monday the 7th. It was originally Wednesday the 9th

Yeah that is cool. I read that on this forum. Gonna definitely try it out with my iPad Pro 12.9. I also bought a black Magic Mouse for my new MBP 14. I use a mouse with Logic Pro on my IMac so I figured why not with the Laptop.

FWIW, I’ve been trying to cleanup all the 9 years of files on my iMac so when I migrate it all to the MBP, it won’t be crap … lol I hope 🤞
attaboy 🤘

At first I planned a cleanup (of years of files) and a migration, but now I think I will start with a clean slate and do a slow transition of only what I need. This, as a way to end up with a cleaner more organized setup (hopefully).

We are all well into the reality distortion field. Enjoy.

I thought about doing a fresh start but I have 2 audio programs I use “Sound Forge” and “T-Racks” that I’d have to buy new for $500 and I’m trying to avoid that. Every thing else is on my Apple account so I’m good there.

At the moment I have about 177GB of data to Migrate from my 2014 iMac over to the new 2023 MBP 14” 1TB hard drive. That includes 90GB of Music, Photos, Documents and apps.

I’m still trying to figure out what the other 87GB actually is ? It’s a jungle in there

I’ve also have 300GB of videos on a external SSD that I’m gonna load up so it would end out 477GB of data on a 1TB hard drive on the new MBP 14”

Download a disk visualizer/scanner app on your iMac like DaisyDisk or a free program, so you can see what is taking space. You should also get a junk/malware scanner app for your iMac to scan the 177GB of data to makesure you are transferring clean and malware-free data, and remove any junk if needed.
Also, since the M2 MBPs have very fast USB ports, the only limiting factor in how fast you can transfer the data from your iMac will be you iMac's USB port and drive:)

That’s a great idea.

Is there a way to transfer just the 2 apps I want and do a clean install ?

Kinda want to just leave the IMac alone. It works great as it is and I want the new MBP14” to stay new.

Yes, I came up with a smart way to do it which should work.
First, locate the .dmg files of the apps you want to transfer, then transfer the .dmg files from the iMac onto your new MBP via USB. Second, open the transferred .dmg files on the new MBP and install the app like normal on your new MBP. Voila!

lol … I’m a musician not a computer guy.
Installing an app like normal for me is going to the App Store and click on ”GET” These programs “Sound Forge“ and “T-Racks” are not in the App Store.

Kinda thinking I should just use those programs on the iMac if I can’t get them over and do a clean install and not booger up the MBP14”

When I say 'install them like normal' I meant you open the transferred .dmg files on your new MBP in Finder and drag the app icon into the Applications folder! It's not 'boogering' up the new MBP, you asked me and I told you how to do it!

Then just go to the apps' respective websites and download the .dmg files from there on your new MBP and open the dmg files in Finder and drag the app icon into the Applications folder! Dude, if you don't know how to install apps in MacOS outside of the APP Store, then there's no helping you, im sorry...you can't have a m2 mbp and not know how to do something as simple as that! It's not rocket science or for computer nerds my guy! No offense...

Cool I’ll give that a shot.

Lol … I’ll try it all and thanks for the help and …. I’m an old burnout musician. Just getting out bed in the morning is a struggle.

FWIW, I’ve been following tracking like a maniac. China > Korea > Alaska > Kentucky so far. Dam that’s a lot of people kicking my package around

Regarding to move your both stated programs (Sound Forge and T-Racks) from your 2014 iMac to your new MBP 14" M2:

First of all you will most likely face the fact that your 2014 iMac and your new MBP M2 are running different MacOS versions.

The last official MacOS an iMac 2014 could run, as of my investigation, was Big Sur (11.7.6). See here:

To know which OS your iMac is running just click on the Apple symbol in the top left corner, then on "About This Mac" and there it will show you which OS your machine is running.

Your new MBP M2 will most likely be shipped with MacOS Ventura (13.x).

As applications evolve over time they also require updated operating systems, so it would be at least likely that the actually on your 2014 iMac installed versions of Sound Forge and T-Racks would not work on your new MBP M2, just for the difference in the operating system.

For Sound Forge this looks like a given, as they state on their webpage
- that they have "decided to discontinue further development of SOUND FORGE Pro Mac" and
- their last version is "Currently NOT compatible with macOS Catalina 10.15.x, macOS Big Sur 11.x or newer versions of macOS"
See here:

So, if we are talking about the same program (I am not a musician, do not know this program) then you may be out of luck here.

T-Racks on the other side, again considering we talk about the same software, looks like a still actual product, also for Mac. See here:

Which version of T-Racks you owe, which version would be required to run on MacOS Ventura (on your new MBP M2), if that would mean just an update or costly upgrade, I do not know, therefore cannot say anything more about that.

Hope this helps a little.

Is SoundForge for Windows using Parallels an option ? Does the license allow you to install it on a second machine ? Or allow a transfer? Is there an “upgrade“ option.

Took me a month to decide cause I‘m a tortured Libra.
Way too many options to choose from and my head almost exploded

MBP 14” 16 GB RAM - 1TB on the way. So exciting

Can I get a attaboy 🤘
Dude. why not 32gb of ram?

Yes that does help. I’m running 10.12 on the iMac so I quess I’m not gonna get those programs. I use them to normalize and master songs. I’m 97% sure I can do all that in Logic I just have to figure out how but thanks I appreciate it.

Or I could air drop the song to the iMac and still use those programs I quess

$400 more and I watched a bunch of videos and not a ton of difference between 16 vs 32.

And money is tight right now. I’m lucky to scrape up the $2200 for what I just bought. My recordings are pretty basic with not a lot of plugins so I should be fine.
Makes sense. I am trying to scrape up 80 bucks right now to get a used high-res display on eBay for my mid-2010 Mbp😭

Again, I am not into music, therefore do not know all these programs you state. Nevertheless my recommendation:

- get your new MBP, have a look which of the programs you normally use can be installed on the new computer
- as you mentioned, potentially use the programs, which you cannot install on the new machine, still on your 2014 iMac until you either find an alternate solution or you can afford to get the most actual version
- in the case of Sound Forge it could be a little more complicated, as they no longer provide a Mac version, only Windows versions. Yes, theoretically you can run that in a virtual machine on your Mac, but you better first check carefully if that really works and then it also means you need the application for the virtual machine plus a Windows license. Potentially another program, running natively on Mac, is at the end of the day the better solution.

Enjoy your new machine!

Thanks for the advice and it’s out for delivery. Gonna be awesome. It’s not like we buy these things everyday. This will be my 1st real great laptop. I’ll be doing so much fun stuff with it musically it’s mind blowing.
