Hi Everyone,
I’ve been spending my three day weekend exploring the history of iPhone quite a bit. Recently I scored an iPhone 4 with iOS 6 at work that was heading to ewaste. I also picked up a iPhone 2G off Ebay in fair condition, which I plan to hold onto as a critical piece of history. I vividly remember remember the launch at Macworld in January 2007, watching all the ads leading up to it in June 2007. So, its something I look forward to owning; especially with the 20th anniversary not too far away in 2027.
There is something I am curious about though and its a reality I believe is endemic to early projects at these big tech companies. I have asked folks who worked on Windows NT at Microsoft for instance at one point did it start self hosting. I’ve asked Craig at Apple did Intel builds of OS X that were compiled as a backup plan. Did they also have the userland features likes like Aqua/Finder?
Now, my question about iPhone OS 1.0, at one point in development did it become the familiar springboard that Steve Jobs demoed at the keynote? I have heard stories that was just a Macromedia Director import; I’ve heard its real code Steve was playing with that could crash. But if its real code, I am sure that wasn’t created in just a month.
Obviously because of the secrecy surrounding the development, not to mention the paranoia and security, we might never know. There are no builds of iPhone OS prior to Alpine or between January and June 2007 in the open. Also, I am confused, is SkankOS builds iPhone OS in disguise?
