I've never used a case or screen protector, it's always been weird that people care about the design but then slap it in a case and the protector strips the coating. I've dropped my phone on occasion but never broken one. The 14 Pros are tough, and I am glad despite so many people using cases, Apple hasn't detoured from improving on durability.

I prefer the feel of my iPhone in a case and it disguises it slightly which I like. The cases I use don’t strip the coating though as I buy a decent case to begin with. Unfortunately these phones aren’t durable enough for the amount of drops I make and on the types of surfaces either.

I like the appearance and design of my phone.
But I'm much more enamored with its general condition so I use a case.
BTW, after nearly two years of removing the case weekly and cleaning it and the phone, there is absolutely no damage from doing so.
No scratches, "stripped coating", nothing.
The phone looks like it did on day 1.
The coating I was referring to is on the screen. The oleophobic coating gets stripped away by the adhesive on the screen protector. I wasn't referring to the case, sorry.

I swear this same dumb article/idea gets recycled every year since iphone 4. If you like using it without a case, fine, but its not a status symbol to use a cell phone without a case, its just a pain in the ass to get it repaired when it breaks. Its not a sign of wealth that you can afford to repair an iphone. A status symbol is a house and a new car.

Right? At my age it’s the time cost more than the actual money cost. And cases add abilities like a kickstand, etc.,

Hung out with some rich people recently and yes, can confirm -- no cases in sight. And also, yes, plenty of subtle other cues.

What I notice mostly when I see these people is that they have basically the same stuff as us, but they're all "elevated" versions. A normal looking jacket that fits insanely well and is clearly made of super nice material. Hair that's been very carefully cut, quite recently. Jeans that somehow fit much better than our jeans and have zero wear on them in any way. Kids' toys that look all Scandinavian, made of wood or something, and look like they maybe came from the MoMA Store. Some kind of soap in the bathroom that has a more complex scent than whatever I buy. One of them gave my 5 year old a little bracelet for her birthday and it looked simple but was just slightly heavier and made out of nicer materials.

So yeah, it absolutely makes sense that people who signal wealth in these ways would leave a case off their iPhone Pro. The chrome edges and flashes of detail of the phone fit right into the whole "what you have, but a nicer version" aesthetic. (Obviously, just leaving a case off your phone signals nothing, but you can see why the rich would go this route.)

I mean, even for us mortals, if you have AppleCare+ it's not exactly the end of the world if you crack your screen or something.

I can confirm a cased or case-less phone is not a reliable metric for determining someone’s wealth too. Just like walking around a Turkish holiday resort and seeing the amount of people wearing Breitling watches and Belenciaga T-shirts does not mean you’d be surrounded by multi-millionaire families from Wigan.

Image is very deceptive. Those people driving flash cars and flash clothes may be thousands in debt. I could go now and make myself look like very wealthy for anyone that didn’t know me but I’d basically be in huge debt.

So no not having a case on your phone means absolutely nothing.

I say this all the time to my wealthy relative. If he makes 10 times as much, but spends 10 times as much, then we have the same level of wealth—he just has the overhead of multiple houses, expensive vehicles, and a ton of random nice stuff that I don’t have to worry about.

It’s all about the cash flow, baby!

If you use an otterbox, you’re dirt poor. Lol lol I kid I kid.

Maybe you kid, you kid, but maybe you're right, you're right. Ever seen a 'celebrity' with a cased phone? If you're poor you want to protect something you spent your hard-earned on, but if you're rich you probably didn't pay for it anyway. It's a company expense, or the manufacturer was happy to give you one to be seen with, or you just phoned Tim and asked him to send over one of the new models....

I used to go caseless with my iPhone 4 back in the day. That thing felt good on the hand and you could grip it well. When I upgraded to the 6s a few years later I had to get a case because that thing was as slippery as a bar of soap and I could tell it would be a matter of time before it went flying out of my hand. Since then I’ve been using cases either from Apple (the leather cases) or Spigen. Currently use the leather case on my iPhone 13. It grips well on the hand without a case, but it feels so much better with the leather case.

With that said, I don’t really care about what others think how wealthy I am based on my possessions. Besides, if you really wanted to show off, I could think of plenty of other ways to give a much greater impression of how wealthy you want others to believe you are.

Does living paycheck to paycheck for most of my working life qualify as poor?

I too, like the poor you describe, want to protect something I spent my hard earned money on (an iPhone). Only I don't use a case.

Does that make me not poor? I'm pretty certain rich people would object and say 'He's NOT rich!" And I know the middle class would say of me, "Never heard of him".

Maybe I'm the working poor? That's a term that has fit before. Only, again, I don't use a case.

PS. I've seen plenty of 'poor' people abuse their stuff - stuff they spent their 'hard earned money' for.

I've had my 6s+ since launch weekend 2015. Always used without a case. Never went flying out of my hand. ;) Still use it as a secondary phone on an active line.

We're all different of course.

The only reason I started putting covers on my iPhone since the 11 is that the thing has become too damn slippy without one.
The 6/7/8 series were the slickest and that is when I started using a case. Before that i didn’t need one.

IMO, phone cases are not needed unless:
1. Phone is ergonomically badly designed
2. User engages in higher risk activity/environment
3. User is clumsy
4. User plans to resell the phone after a short period of ownership and wants to ensure maximum resale value

And now
5. User wants to be pitied

I feel like the whole premise doesnt make much sense. If you have apple care you are protected so that would explain most of the non case examples.

For those that need an to use the iPhone for business purposes, time is money so they would be foolish to not have a case. It's about efficient use of time. Say you are a doctor or lawyer, time is money. Why waste time at the Apple Store getting the replacement if one can bypass this with a case and screen protector.

Not to mention that an Apple Store might be quite a commute.
For me, it would be a minimum 5 hour round trip PLUS the repair/replacement time.
And that's IF the traffic and road conditions are exceptionally good. o_O

I’m not a fan of cases because of how they feel after a few months which is usually sticky or greasy with the leather and silicone cases. I usually buy one though and use for a few months till the newness wears off and then it goes naked..

Makes a degree of sense. If something bad happens to your device and/or you're just going to replace it in a year with the next latest thing, then investing in protection is silly.

These things ARE expensive though. So, I can't imagine one isn't either (a) tied to some contract to keep trading up or (b) independently wealthy to afford to buy such expensive and easily scuffed devices without caring to put cases on them.

I see runners with their phablets in hand every day.

How they don't go insane is a mystery to me.

-Multi-tasking isn't actually a thing so you'll either be unable to focus on your running or music, or be too distracted by your running and holding your Pro Max to be aware of your surroundings and whatever surface you're running on.

Sweaty, wet hands will make you drop a smartphone with even the grippiest cover.

If you can afford a phablet then you can afford an Apple Watch SE at the very least. Or get some old TouchID iPhone that you can use when running, one that fits in an armband or in a pocket.

Just don't go running or workouts with your smartphone in your hand, please!
The runners are starting a new trend of ”sweat wealth”. Keep up man! 😂

Discovered the best combo ever and never looked back… since iPhone 11:

case:
Sisyphy REAL Carbon Fiber case… ridiculously thin and even more ridiculously strong.

camera lens protection:
Anti Scratch HD Tempered Metal Glass Camera Screen Protector Cover.

These two fit perfectly and work so well. Put this on mine and family’s phones moment I ordered the phones… kids phones have been dropped so many times I cannot even count (mine too but lot less). No breaks or scratches on phone or glass anywhere. Yes case has scratches but no damage to phone and no hardware issues from drops. Super thin, and easily fits anywhere caseless phone will fit.
