Do you have any affiliation with the company that sells or distributes Runcore SSD? Your review read like a advertisement.

HA HA. I just really love the MBA and I am amazed at how fast the Runcore SSD has made my MBA. This is the first non-Apple product I have ever told people is worth buying.

I am so amazed and impressed by the results that I really wanted to share with all my friends here on MacRumors and anyone interested in an SSD, MBA, or Runcore that my experience has been stellar. From installation to performance I have been IMPRESSED!

I guess more than anything, I have pushed people to buy the MBA and stated how great the stock SSD was over the HDD, and I cannot believe this much performance is available via an aftermarket SSD. Look at the xBench results I posted for the factual differences between the stock SSD and Runcore SSD.

BTW, I have 3000 posts here in the MBA forum. Aren't we supposed to "SHARE" when we find something that makes the Mac (MBA) even better? I suppose I have advertised the MBA through and through on these forums, is that wrong? I sure wish Apple would cut me a commission on all of the MBAs I have sold for them... any plan like that?

You could always just set up an amazon affiliate account. ;)

I wouldn't want to jeopardize my account here, as MR wouldn't let me post how great the MBA is if I included a link in my signature to my Amazon affiliate account. Good idea but in practice it would probably get me booted from my favorite website on the Internet.

The good side of the grass.
Very impressive X Bench. Approaching some X25M speeds. If it was 160GB or my drive was on the fritz I'd replace it with this for sure but for right now, I'll pass.

Thanks for being a guinea pig Scottsdale.;)

Thanks Scottsdale, great info. I am interested in following your lead. The website has little to no support, i.e. the live chat is down and there is no Customer Support phone #. I have a shipping question. I want to sign a signature release similar to what Apple uses, thereby avoiding a missed delivery. Any thoughts?

Add the comment that you want signature required in the notes section during checkout at RuncoreStore or any of our resellers. I know http://www.MyDigitalDiscount.com has inventory in the U.S. right now and they are great with any special requests and support.

P.S. You all keep talking about GB size but are forgetting that this upgrade changes the machine completely. We have a satisfaction grantee or your money back policy on all of our drives. Even if you get a 32GB drive you will be 100% satisfied with it due to the massive increase in usability of the computer. Until you try it you really cannot fathom the difference. Jason O'Grady from ZDnet told me that I would have to hold his family hostage to get a sample drive I sent him back and there was no way he was ever going back to the stock drive. Try one I grantee it will be worth every penny and blow your expectations away.

Also don't forget it comes with a very small pocket sized USB 2.0 enclosure for the HDD or SSD you take out of the machine.

I don't feel like a guinea pig but more like a genius. It really does make the MBA feel completely different in a great way. Even the 2 GB RAM limitation is helped by the faster SSD for swap files and page in/outs.

What "Runcore" posted I left out about the drive enclosure. The enclosure is tiny (not much bigger than the 1.8" drive itself), and it's easy to tuck away in a small pocket in a laptop bag. A lot smaller than carrying around a big standard size drive with massive enclosure. I will try to include a photo later.

Don't forget that you can buy it from my digital discount on ebay here for 413 after 8% cashback.

Great deal. If you don't want to save your stock drive, you can subtract what you make from selling it and the Runcore SSD could be nearly free.

I personally ordered from RocketDisk for $449.99 + shipping. Still cheaper than going directly through Runcore.

Scottsdale: Did these Runcore drives for the Air just recently come out? Seems like it. Was there no option before?

I read something about them here a few months ago as providing a rev A MBA SSD upgrade. I read another thread a few weeks ago and decided to try one out. I don't know how long they have been on the market.

There was absolutely NO SOLUTION before the Runcore SSDs come out. Not only that, going from a stock HDD to stock SSD through Apple seemed impossible too. Someone once mentioned an $800 stock SSD upgrade price but wasn't clear how to get one. Apple doesn't offer the upgrade as a standard thing in there stores. Basically, if you bought an MBA with an HDD, it would always be STUCK with an HDD. And same with an SSD. I actually read about one person wanting to downgrade from an SSD to stock HDD.

It's nice to not only have an option but a much better and faster SSD in the option.

How are you getting the 8% cashback? I can't get Bing to apply it to this item.

I have never used that service. Are bing and live the same now?

I have no advice other than to say find a way to get the Runcore SSD, you won't be sorry.

Well bugout posted that you could get 8% off (which would put the 64GB SSD at $229 with free shipping from eBay. Comes with all the stuff RunCore includes, except $60 less and no shipping cost). I was wanting to know if anyone could tell me how to apply that 8% to this drive, because I'll buy it once I know how.

Check the temp

I have a Rev A, and it does well, however when it gets hot, it does the same thing. I use a laptop cooler to help.

I have a rev A MacBook Air with HDD. I love it but it suffers from the choppy video problem. Specifically, when watching iTunes content, 30mins in the video becomes choppy and unwatchable.

Will the Runcore SSD help or am I better off trading in for a Rev C?

Thanks

Warranty Issues?

Would opening up the MBA and installing the Runcore SSD void the 1 year warranty? Would it cause a problem if I eventually purchase an Apple Care Policy?

Sorry for the silly question. I'm interested in this option but I just got my MBA recently. I'm not afraid to open this up and do it, but I'm afraid of possibly voiding my warranty. Any thoughts please.

Thanks!

Yes, it would "void" the warranty. Basically just purchase AppleCare (assuming you plan to do so), and if you ever have an issue/go in for a Genius Bar appointment/send it in to AppleCare USA, just simply take out the RunCore and insert your old HDD/SSD.

EDIT: Anyone know about that cashback thing? I still can't get it to apply 8% to the 64GB RunCore from eBay.

Bing Cashback

I think that I've got the Bing cashback working. Here's what I did: (1) disabled AdblockPlus; (2) went to bing.com and searched "buy it now"; (3) clicked on the ebay ad right above the search results, which sent me to the ebay page. From there, you can search for the runcore SSD - just make sure that there's that "$" icon next to the item to ensure that it qualifies for cashback.

Hope that helps!

Disclaimer: while I've used the Live/Bing cashback before, I've never used it to buy anything off of ebay.

That's debatable... I thought drives were user upgradeable in Macs? That would encourage people to keep the original drive and reinstall it if ever there is a warranty issue. I still think Apple could be held responsible for voiding an AppleCare warranty if all someone did was swap the drive. Someone needs to challenge Apple on all its BS about voiding warranties when someone changes a part or produces a minor "ding" on their Mac. Apple is operating in bad faith to do such a thing to its customers.

I would definitely say to upgrade and save stock drive and use in super portable drive enclosure that's included with the Runcore SSD. Then, swap the stock drive back in if there's a hardware problem with the MBA.

I got a six to eight second improvement. That's not really where the performance differences are noticeable with the Runcore SSD. If that were the only improvement it wouldn't be worth the upgrade price. It's the whole system where you see the improvement. Whether simply opening an app to transferring large files to multitasking to swap file transfers to startup and shutdown, the Runcore improves the whole system's performance. Measuring everything is difficult but completely instantly noticeable throughout the whole experience after the Runcore upgrade.

One thing I didn't report clearly enough too is that the Runcore's write speed is more like 4X to 5X which is also a huge improvement nearly as important as the read speed changes. One thing that's impossible to measure is how the swap file performance might change heavy demand on the RAM limitations. That means the 2 GB of RAM isn't as noticeable as a limitation with the Runcore improving swap file transfers. Again, that's going to be nearly impossible to measure but it's changing the whole system's performance not just reading from the drive.

Isn't that what I said..? I'm not sure I've ever heard Apple advocating or promoting 3rd party MacBook Air upgrades, but I could be wrong. But I will be keeping my HDD for AppleCare purposes.
