I haven't used Windows in awhile and I am sure they have improved it by now, but I when used Windows I always had to update drivers or search for drivers that were hard find because a 3rd party vendor didn't support the latest upgrade to Windows just yet.

Interesting perspectives here. I work as an IT and create media at my current job. I have used PC's since DOS 1.0 and Windows 3.0. I bought my first apple MBP in 2012 to edit videos.

Anyway, I currently have a very beefy Windows 10 PC and a 2010 Mac Pro also beefy that I use with Adobe Creative Suite apps to create content. I have ordered an M1max/64GB/1TB to replace the Mac Pro as she does lack portability and is getting old.

We can argue which OS is better and never reach a conclusion as it will depend on needs and preference. From the perspective of an IT person - Mac's need way less attention compared to a Windows PC.

Windows will need more updates, have more driver issues, and is more prone to malware problems. At work we are about 50/50 Mac/Windows machines. My work load for dealing with issues is easily 95% Windows/ 5% Mac. I acknowledge 90% of the PC issues are brought on by the users. But I have shifted the really "issue prone" users to Macs and their issues drop to zero. JMO ;)

I have used every version of Windows from 1 (yes there was a version 1, on floppies) to 7 on my Dell laptop (hardly used). I have sold 1000’s of Windows PC’s and servers to my network clients because they are the accepted business computer/software solution and reasonably priced. MS Office is the Corp and US Government standard. When I retired, I wanted to learn the Mac OS, so I bought a used iMac from a student that was going back to China. It is perfect for what I do now. I like the way the iPhone and Apple TV integrate with each other. I look at computers as tools for performing certain tasks, Macs were always big with desk top publishing crowd, but they didn’t do well in the office environment. Plus, Apple wouldn’t allow clones, plus they always had a small segment of the market. But most of all, they wouldn’t sell to small resellers like me.

If ads don't bother you, and your primary needs are gaming and office applications, then Windows should be perfect.
I get more ads using Safari and 2 ad blockers compared to Edge.
lately i have been favoring Safari with Mojave over Edge which wants me to change or upload their photos.

Actually been thinking about this more and more lately. Last few years I've been trying to be a Linux user and while I've mostly "used" it I haven't really used it. A lot of times it just doesn't allow me to work. Sure I can do some things on it but still lately I am starting to think I'm missing out especially the hobbies.

In fact I got so fed up a few months ago I actually removed the Linux box off my desk and put it away in another room and tried the windows 10 box I've really haven't used since I built it. Got a couple weeks with it and back to trying the Linux machine I put in time out. Been trying Linux again past couple months and still have issues. Run into something almost every time doing something that's not basic. Want to burn that iso of windows 10 for a laptop for a clean install? Couldn't do it. Tried a suggested program, it was in the repo, clicked build. Wouldn't build.

Okay try to load up the VM of windows because I need a couple programs to not make my camera completely useless, thinking I could access the USB stick there and just burn the iso, gave the VM permission to let windows access that USB port and while it knew the USB stick was in it, wouldn't mount it.

Got a new laptop that came with windows, a yoga 6 (same config as a previous poster here has) placed a fat 1tb nvme drive in it, idea was to install Linux and had issues so downloaded fresh images. Tried a couple and well, before I installed I needed to buy a new wifi adapter because I had an unsupported wifi adapter in it! Finally get it, spend more time debating on a distro, opt for Manjaro again (updated version over my desktop). Got it to detect the new wifi adapter, installed it, fairly quickly and... Barely use the thing.

Actually been thinking about putting the stock windows 10 drive back in and either trying to clone it, or get a fresh 5gb iso file off windows and do a clean install, maybe upgrade to pro while I'm at it with a fresh install.

I'm at the point I don't do stuff because I don't want to deal with futzing around with Linux. One of my major hobbies I've become distanced from because I just don't want to try to work around the OS. It's kind of taken away from the experience of the hobby. Not sure I'm making sense here.

I guess a long winded post kind of agreeing with the OP.

I haven't used windows exclusively since I think windows 7...

I have thought about an m1 but it has marginally more software I can use then Linux but not all of it.

I logged into my Dell laptop (provided by my office) for the first time in quite a while over the weekend.

The situation you describe hasn't changed a bit, as far as I can tell. But in this case, that may be due to some brain-dead corporate security policies, courtesy of our "IT department."

I'm referring to the operating system itself.

You're talking about application specific behavior. But this isn't the first time I've wondered - why is anyone using Safari? There may be legitimate reasons, but I've never seen a use for it and sometimes forget it's even there.

I use Firefox, but pretty much any browser with U-Block Origin is going to get rid of damn near all adds.

comfort, since 2001 i have been using safari
if that is the best..... who knows?
the app syncs well with the MacBook and Ipad.
im using firefox legacy on MtLion now

windows 10 stopped annoying us with reminder sand ads,
getting a PC from Miscocentr helped eliminate bloatware.

Well, I just do not see the ads. They do not appear to me. Perhaps because I use a localized version of Windows (Brazilian Portuguese), or maybe because they are so subtle that I have not even noticed them. In any case, this is not an issue for me.

In any case, your post has just shown how to disable these ads.

And what would be the alternative to using Windows?

I can't think of a better alternate, based on what you've said matters to you. A better implementation of standard office software - in terms of compatibility at least - does not exist. And the same goes for games, there is no better selection, or one that is more optimized to the target platform, than you're going to get from Windows.

However if you're asking for advice if Microsoft goes out of business, I would say Mac is your next logical choice simply because of the fact that a large corporation underwrites all of the development, and therefore is more likely to provide official support to their buyers.

Personally, my only options are BSD, Linux, and OSX. I do understand the frustration with Linux at times, it's complete chaos. Windows is simply not in the cards for me. But my usage differs quite a bit from yours, and I'm not much of a gamer.

What Ads? I use windows and I don't get ads in my OS or office software? I can easily turn of telemetry (which I do) but even before that, I didn't notice anything like that. Yeah Windows came with some candy crush type crap, but that doesn't slow my computer down and that's easily solved.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding your point

Double thumbs up on the recommendation of uBlock Origin.

I've been puzzled by your claim that Windows itself displays ads. I have a half dozen Windows 10 systems, and haven't seen an ad that was displayed by the OS itself.

The out-of-the-box user experience of Windows 10 is not a good one, IMO. It gets worse if Office 365 is installed. But with a few tweaks, Win 10 can be wrestled back to give the user control. Since not everyone is willing or able to do those things, I don't recommend Win 10 to non-techies.

I do not see any ads in my Windows installations as well.

We have 3 Macbooks here, including an Air M1. I am very familiar with MacOS, including Unix / Linux. Macs are great for media. Macs have good hardware, but not upgradeable. However, for productive work, I clearly prefer Windows. Far better and intuitive file and window management, no restrictions like with Apple. Apple may be an advantage if you want to be in the Apple cosmos. If you don't want to be restricted, you'd better stick with Windows in the PC / laptop segment.

Because it syncs into the Apple Ecosystem. Cross device sync of passwords, bookmarks etc but also support for ApplePay with the ability to authorize payments using an Apple Watch.

Also, it isn't Chrome or Chromium based. It is good to have alternatives.

Thank you! You are a respected member of this forum, and I've been saying it for ages and maybe now someone will believe me.
I bought Windows computer last year and it has Windows 10 on it and it didn't have any ads or even candy crush. There was only Netflix, Spotify, Microsoft Office apps and you can easily get rid of this "junk" if you don't use it.
My work computer doesn't have any ads either or any 'junk' (of course it runs on Windows 10 Enterprise
My Windows PC is fast and it works well. Both, my work and my personal laptops. I also use a MacBook, but I don't have any complaints about any of them. I do have complaints about macOS though. For example my USB hub is not working anymore after upgrading to macOS 12 and my MacBook Air used to randomly crash (we had that argument awhile ago and people said my MacBook is faulty, but the crashes have stopped now)
I also have no complaints about my Android phone (Motorola) nor my iPhone. I've learned that a computer is a computer and a phone is a phone. There's no better or worse. And once a friend of mine told me: "What's the difference whether you use Mac or Windows?" and I agree. Both are the same. But yeah, at least in Europe Windows doesn't have ads and the 'junk' that comes with your PC often is manufacturers junk. Kinda like buying an Android phone. I remember once I bought some Huawei phone and it had so much crapware on it. Such as Spiderman and other games.

Actually a phone is a computer too and MacOS and Windows are certainly not the same. MacOS is much closer to Linux than Windows.

You didn't get my point at all.

Let's just say for most people computer is a wen browser. It doesn't matter which OS they use. As long as they it can connect to the internet it's fine.

You can tell me to use Mac or Windows or Linux only and I'd survive easily on every system (taking into consideration that it has to be up to date, so please don't throw hanna montana etc distros at me.

I bet I could even survive on TempleOS or on ReactOS.

Edit: I forgot the name of the updated version of TempleOS. It looked beautiful and had networking abilities.

If for you a computer is just a web browser why buy a Mac or Windows PC. Just buy a chromebook.
