Why are people so obsessed with the past and can seem to accept change ?
It’s kinda psychological. While there are exceptions, people for the most part have a fondness for their early teens it’s where they obtained some measure of autonomy, their bodies were endless sources of energy so there was a short path between wanting to do something and actually doing it, and there were still plenty of new things they haven’t experienced before coming their way (and things like food and housing were handled by someone else :). It’s an exciting time! And, again generally speaking, people tend to see the things that existed during that time of their life with some high level of importance. (Some people pick up their style of dress during this time and will keep that for the rest of their lives)

As they start to take on responsibilities and not have enough time (or energy) to do the fun things they’d been doing for literally their ENTIRE lives up until that point, the “less fun” of their life is projected upon the world. The world is the problem and if the world changed so that it were just like it was back then… that would have no impact on decreasing their responsibilities, providing them more time (or energy or money). But, it’s VERY hard to separate the two for a lot of people. The change they REALLY don’t want to accept is not the world, it’s themselves.

Just looked at the front page of this site and I’m pretty shocked to see that it has this ugly subject where nothing used to be. I can’t believe this passed the desk of whoever is in charge of this forum and I guarantee you that this would have been stopped by better moderation. And forcing readers of the front page to look at this without being able to turn it off is just a poor design decisions.

The Jony Ive era saw phones too thin to hold a big battery, and laptops too thin to have a deep keyboard. I am inspired by Jony Ive's work, but not every decision he made was the right one.
I believe Ive is a consumer of his own hype.

What has the world come to?

Just upgraded to the iPhone 14 pro and I’m pretty shocked to see the case has this ugly indented spot where the SIM card used to be. I can’t believe this passed the desk of whoever is in charge of apples design these days and I guarantee you that this would have been stopped by Ive or Jobs if they were still at Apple. And the slippery/fingerprint magnet stainless steel sides and slippery matte back case are just poor design decisions as well.

Like you never noticed it on your extensive research beforehand?

Stop making this forum your personal daily blog, it's really sad and pathetic, lol.

Steve Jobs, for sure. But I hated Johnny Ive’s obsession with making everything impossibly thin and light - at the expense of functionality. Give me the 0.2Kg heavier MacBook Pros of this generation with their vastly superior hardware, performance, ports, and battery over the Johnny Ives MacBook Pro design 10 times out of 10

That little plastic window is the mmWave 5G antenna. I believe it's only on iPhones in the US. The SIM tray slot is still under the volume buttons on iPhones everywhere else.

There are things from both today and back then that I prefer. I wouldn't mind the Mac's modern design sense coupled with the design (frontend and backend) of older versions of OSX. I think an iPhone 13 Mini would be almost perfect for me, just give me a headphone jack and a classic version of iOS like 6. But I think I'd stick with a modern version of iOS on my iPad Pro.

I miss 80s and 90s  culture and marketing (e.g., Think Different, iMac Bondi Blue, MacWorld, eWorld, etc.) but little else.

I miss the Jonny Ive's thin fonts and minimalist design, but to be honest, by the time he left, he hadn't done much new for years. The current MacBook Pro still resembles the old titanium ones he designed back in the year. Anybody catch in the news that Ives just designed the coronation logo for King Charles? I think it looks pretty nice.

I miss the mall culture of the 1980s and early 1990s. Back when you had Aladdin's Castle, Miller's Outpost, Mervyn's, The Wherehouse, Sam Goody, SunCoast, KB Toys, Waldenbooks, B Dalton Booksellers, Circuit City, Software ETC, Gottschalks, Wicks 'N' Sticks, so on and so on.

The mall was the place to hang out and have fun!

Design wise, it is well agreed that both Steve and Ive had made many iconic designs that become the mainstay design, copied by literally everyone. Perfect example is the wedge shaped MacBook Air. Literally all ultrabook laptops are designed (and still are today) like that.

Having said that, there are many form over function, and many are too early for their time. Perfect example of the former are iPhone 4 + antennagate and butterfly keyboard. Perfect example of the later are the retina MacBook and MacBook Air. Their potential would only be realized with Apple Silicon.

In the end, as a consumer, I just need to do my due diligence. Luckily today, plenty of people would provide reviews and take things apart to show potential flaws. For example, the lack of proper heat sink in the M2 MacBook Air. You can say whatever you want about Apple Silicon, but I would avoid that until better cooling/efficiency were reached (ie 3nm), or I would just get the tried and true M1 version.

As much as I appreciated Steve and Ive, things have moved on, and as a consumer, I just need to be more critical and vigilant so we won’t have another butterfly keyboard in our expensive computers.

Yep, you can see the executive structure changing and Apple's products sliding down that slippery slope heading to where everyone else is at of having products designed by committee and designers told to shut up and take direction from the clueless people who think they know best.
Take a look at the awful skeuomorphic iOS UI under Scott Forstall before Ive took charge and made it beautiful as one example.
Ive has his haters on here but they forget that Apple would be a footnote in history of it hadn't been for him and Jobs, their taste and attention to details.

I miss the xx’s years… f*ck it! I don’t miss anything, evolve or die. The past is dead and lost forever. Our brains are wired to forget the bad stuff and only remember the good things, but everything are just shadows of our mind.

No more whiskey for me for the day. Tomorrow will be another day… and another bottle.

The non-US version still has a SIM card tray there.
