Looked into the wrapsol thing.. Just bought one.. Definitely a better alternative to sanding down the phone.. Only sanding I can recommend is the bezel..that just looks flat out luxurious.. I get every iPhone that comes out and I need to sell my Phone each time.. I wonder what sanding down the entire phone would do to your resale value?? and Yes Wrapsol does look better than the sanded phones.. the Black one looks terrible.. No Apple logo? Your phone looks like a TMobile Dash.. But you like it so thats all that matters.. my 5 cents.

The black looks a lot better in person and you don't HAVE to shave the Apple logo off. In fact, you'd have to scrub for a long time for the Apple to wear off.

I can imagine that it does look better in person.. But do you also see how good in pictures and videos the Wrapsol looks? Personally, I wouldnt do that kind of noticable modding since I would want to sell the phone.. but to some it might not matter..

True, but the film doesn't cover the whole entire phone and you could get bubbles or dust under the film if it's not applied exactly perfect.

By sanding it, you're not covering the iPhone in anything.

By the way, I'm never selling this iPhone. I collect my Apple stuff.

I have allready ordered a wrapsol kit. When I get it I'll make sure to take a high res pictures. Close up and everything. ;) but I live in denmark. So it could take a while for it to get all the way to me. :b

holy crap that looks like crap. and yes, we are all entitled to our opinions.

How does the white look? I think it looks amazing. I'm not crazy about the black but believe me, the pictures don't show what it really looks like.

I've had the Wrapsol on the back of my 3GS for a week now, and it's flawless.
I didn't put the front shield on, as I think the screen is a tough as nails and awesome anyway.

So wait...

if the iphoen is clear plastic painted black on the inside, couldnt you sand the inside and then paint that a different color?

In a related story, i want to see a matte black iphone that doesnt have the logos sanded off, i'm considering doing this.

Updates?

I have a question regarding your use of the iPhone over time. Did the grease from your hands, etc. stain the cover? I'd assume that without the glossy coating and with the rough surface the cover would be more stain-prone.

in the right light, you can see a bunch of scratches all over it... but in normal ambient lighting conditions, it looks awesome. And yeah... I took the apple logo and words off on purpose.

wow that looks like crap

sorry but it does :/

what grit sandpapers did you use

I'm not saying a nicely done matte finish isn't attractive, but what I find funny is, this whole thing, wanting a matte finish, in large part, is really just because we've only been able to have the glossy back, I guarantee if it was reversed and the phones all had perfectly executed matte backs from Apple, there'd be a thread just like this, with people wanting to have a high gloss back, and we'd be discussing the best way to acheive a scratch free, mirror gloss. I just think it's funny that it seems to be human nature to want what we don't have.

Don't listen to the haters, this mod is awesome.

I'm considering doing it with my black 3GS. The only reason I'm not doing it for sure is that I already have my phone nice and snug in a case, haha.

Or instead of sanding your phone down which seems a bit drastic you could get what I have on my phone, a product called Wrapsol (similar to Best Skins ever). It is a skin that you apply to the phone and it makes the texture matte and finger print free. It also protects and hides scratches.

Not saying that doesn't look cool as I love my matte finish, just sanding the phone seems a bit drastic and as you found out, is a bit risky if you aren't careful.

Wrapsol is the shiznizzel.

This.

Do you know if this will work on a white iPhone. Or if they do a set for a white phone if this doesn't work.

It will work fine for the white Iphone. The only problem with this and any skin on white is after a while they become a little discolored. You don't see it at all on the black, but on white after a while it MAY appear to be a little yellowish.

bumping an old thread but i just did this to my white 3GS back and chrome bezel, i now have a matte white iphone with a brushed aluminum surrounding...took 15 minutes and it looks like i have a brand new phone, only let down was the electrical tape i used to tape off the screen pulled off my screen protector and it was the last i had so i gotta be careful for a day or two.

The only thing I hate about having a matte phone now is that it seems like dirt likes to stick to it and it's almost impossible to get it off. I have a blue-ish hue going around the top (probably from where my shirts rub on it) and I can't wash it off. Oh well.

Holy crap how much did you freaking sand off @______________________@
(also as others have mentioned, the phone looks a lot worse without the apple logo)

I recently refurbished an iphone ( I will post a DIY) and you must have been using some stupidly brutal sandpaper ( like 60 grit )
The iPhone was in pretty bad condition with very deep scracthes and dents, but I was able to get rid of everything but the dents.

I used the following

800, 1000, 1500, 2000, 2500, 3000 , 3M rubbing compound, Meguair's NXT wax

From my experience, the matte black iPhone = looks really awful

I have a final wed, but I will hopefully post the DIY

Instead of sanding down to remove scratches, has anyone tried out Meguire's PlastX? I've heard that it helps remove minor scratches.

I'm never too clear how these products work...do they smooth out the scratches while removing some of the plastics around it, or do they fill up the microscopic gaps of the scratches?

plastx is a useless product

its not aggressive enough to get rid of scratches, basically it has oil fillers to make it seem like your scratches are not as bad

3M rubbing compound is much better
