Surfing the web makes only sense in portrait mode if you use the mobile version of the browser. Almost all standard websites are composed for horizontal viewing. The portrait mode might be useful for the iPhones and maybe the iPad mini, but especially the 12.9 iPP screams for horizontal usage (apart from reading magazines or PDFs...).
What he said!!!

I'm pretty sure that's why Apple changed the way Face ID works, so it can unlock when the device is horizontal. I can't think of an instance where Face ID would kick in while someone was browsing the web and holding the iPad with two hands, unless they were using their nose as a pointing device.

It's kinda like getting used to Touch ID to FaceID on the iPhone. You hate it at first but you get used to it and end up loving it.
Lol. Apple fanboism to level max.
I still hate my iPhone X’s faceID even after 1 yr. There is absolutely nothing to like about faceID.

I’m sorry, I had to laugh when I read this post. I’m thinking...um...just move your hand. How hard is that? Reminded me of this Seinfeld clip. Lol.

Have found Face ID far superior than on the IPhone. Much easier to unlock especially when it is laying flat.

Same for me. Combine that with the keyboard where you can double press the space bar and not have to swipe up to unlock, makes it so much faster.
Cool - I wasn’t aware of the space bar double tap shortcut - works like a dream. For me, FaceID on the Pro is so much better than on my iPhoneX; quicker and more accurate. I like it!

Is there a way to unlock and open to the homescreen with FaceID devices without swiping at all? That would be great....

Not with a bare iPad. Only the shortcuts available when you’re using a keyboard.

Unless you’re jailbroken of course.

It’s funny I was thinking about how much I love Face ID on my new iPad but I can see where this would be an annoyance if you’re always holding it with your hands. I either have mine on a lap pillow or in a stand that holds it up. Face ID is great in those scenarios.

I and many others that I know use the iPad in landscape mode 95% of the time. Why didn’t the put the camera to the horizontal bezel? That would be also much better for FaceTime as you are not off center all the time....

That would be nice if they did that. 95% of the time I am also in landscape mode including for FaceTime calls.

Don't understand all the fuss, face id on my new iPad is awesome and very reliable. Remember to disable "require attention" in the face id settings.

I love Face ID on the iPad, I rarely have the camera covered when unlocking.

I do wish the camera was on the “top” in landscape though, for video calls. The angle from the side feels too low and a bit awkward when doing a meeting with the keyboard case.

I’ve had almost every home button on every ipad i’ve ever bought eventually fail. Now THAT is annoying. I will take face ID & simply moving my hand any day over that. Seriously. Face ID is super speedy and works in any orientation. What a convenience. Good riddance to the physical home button.

Yes!! In the past I would turn on the multi-finger gesture to close apps to reduce wear on the button and try and extend its lifecycle.

I absolutely love the Face ID. I use a lap stand 99% of the time and it works perfectly. I have an older iPhone so it’s new to me, and I think it’s a great feature.

They could move the faceID camera to the corner of the iPad but Sir Jony will loathe the asymmetry.

I like faceid on the iPad. It makes logging in to websites etc much easier with keychain/1Password authenticating practically automatically.

I bought an iPhone 8 instead of 10 because I wasn’t as much a fan on the phone as I use Apple Pay a lot without specifically looking at the phone. Touch ID is easier on a small handheld device.
