I tested that but did not notice any difference in speed on my 11 Pro Max. Maybe it is faster on older phones?
Since my eyes do not need to be looking at the phone it unlocks such that when I do finally look at screen it’s already unlocked. It is so fast unlocking that I would be hard pressed to actually test or notice an unlocking speed difference.

My point is I do not feel myself waiting for unlock. By time I try to use phone it always seems to be unlocked. I swipe up and it just works.

Makes sense. 👍

Sorry, but I can't read this, so I'm not really able to comment on this.
well, I can't find it in English as it auto switch to Spanish, but "face ID directions Apple" will show you the official website from Apple.

When the iPhone is laying in a dock, it is already in the position you are going to hold it so grabbing it wont make the screen switch ON, this means you need to touch the screen to activate it, Face ID is quick for optimal conditions but it doesn't count the thousand of situations you face all day.

I agree with all this people who say Touch ID unlocks the iphone just when you grab it before even you face your phone (I put the thumb in the button ASA I take it from anywhere), Face ID is just because this, more slow, but it even fails a lot…

when is in the desktop, you have to push the screen which is a second delay, then look to your phone in a proper way, then swipe, VS touching the button straight and unlock!!

sorry but is pure math, there is no discussion here. 3 is more than 1 at human scale.

I switch it OFF yesterday, I found out it works a bit better on my desk unlocking, but all the extra steps to awake the phone and swipe are presents.

Awkward

I don't know if this has been mentioned allready, but there's an easy sollution (alltrough costly) to this hand-cover issue:

2 FaceiD sensors. 1. at the top of the device and one at the side, so when you are at landscape mode the one camera is at the bottom/top, so you'll always have at least 1 camera/sensor that is looking at your face.

I've had my iPad Pro 11 for 10+ months now and FaceID still drives me crazy for the same reasons the OP stated. For a while I tried putting a "film" around the camera (with a hole for the camera) to try and keep me from covering the camera and found that helped some, but not always. Also it led me to determine the "Camera Covered" message was BS sometimes as it must just be a default message that it couldn't get a goo dread.

anyway, the point is I see a lot of Face ID iPhone users enter the code, this means some of us are stupid or aren't "holding it right", anyway, this means Face ID has a problem, some human are smart enough to use it right, some not, Touch ID in the other side works with all humans, smart and not so smart ones….

I'm pretty sure if Apple could have statistics they will be shameful, but right now there is no alternative to Face ID in a fancy mode for Apple (touch ID only can exist as it is in the Touch ID iPhone era, Android solutions are pagan, nobody cares if they work)

I've had this issue but not often because I often unlock the iPad while it’s propped up in landscape with the smart folio. I also don't mind using it in portrait mode though.

I have to say, it took me a couple of days to adjust, but now Face ID works perfect on my 12.9 with Apple Keyboard cover. Even if I cover it, I can move my hand fast enough to get it to unlock.

wish there was another camera somewhere that would fix this problem for me (even though I know that’s not really feasible).
While this would be a good solution, it'd also bring up the cost of the iPad, since those FaceID sensors aren't cheap. Guess you have to adjust. As said above, the alternative is to move your finger over a home button every time.

I finally gave up, and simply turned Face ID off for unlock. I tried to turn password off altogether, but was told my wallet would be deleted. Why can’t I simply leave my iPad unlocked all the time except for things like wallet?

It would be neat if devices could be left unlocked while at home and then the lock feature turned back on away from home

Same here, I’ve been using a 4 digit code with setting to also only require it ”every 15 minutes.” Not perfect but it’s the best workaround I‘ve found so far.

4 years later people still complaining lol, move your finger out of the way problem solved
It’s far from that simple, I have the same problems even though I usually have my ipad “floating” above the keyboard and thus the camera is not covered by anything. FaceID works, but rarely if ever does it work without a hassle of putting my face close enough to the camera. I wouldn’t go so far as to say I “hate” it, officially or unofficially, but it’s not a smooth or good experience.

I don’t us a keyboard with a ipad, even in folio on a desk never had a issue
