I sold my M1 MBA, just ordered an M2 MBA, and I feel like a kid at Christmas.

Out of curiosity, what did you get it for the M1 MBA? I would probably hand mine down to a family member or one of my nieces like I plan to do with my older 5k iMac.

I don't have any practical reason for doing so - my M1 was perfectly fine.

I sold my M1 MBA, just ordered an M2 MBA, and I feel like a kid at Christmas.

Tech is a hobby of mine. I like the latest and greatest gadgets, and don't mind spending money on them. It's certainly not from any kind of 'need', but rather a 'want'. I know this, and there's nothing wrong with that mindset.

As some have called it, it may be a "fool's game" to some, but I could say the same for the way many others spend their time, energy, and money. That is something I would never do, however, as it is their life to live as they see fit - to each their own.

As I said, tech is not a collection of tools for me, it's a hobby. I don't want to just read about the latest gadgets and gizmos, I want to feel them, to use them, and to truly appreciate the design and engineering that goes into them. I can't afford all the tech I would like to try, but I can afford to take a financial hit every few years in order to sell my current device and buy the newest one I'm interested in. This year, it's the M2 MBA.

Some like clothes, some like jewels. Others like fancy food, while still others like plays and concerts. Me, I like a desk full of gadgets to tinker with.

I wish more people on these forums understood that, and stopped telling others how misguided their priorities are. I wish we could be excited for each other, rather than having a judgy holier-than-thou attitude I've been seeing more and more on these forums. I wish we were allowed to enjoy our tech without fear of being mocked for not going with what others believe to be the "better" choice.

You do you, and I'll do the same.
Well said. If I wasn't in medical school and had the money to burn, I'd absolutely sell my M1 MBA which I love, and buy the Midnight M2 MBA (or splurge for the 16" MBP to have that display)!

Great post. Love the sentiment and can echo it personally.

Many of my past purchases have been because I wanted the shiny new thing and not because I desperately needed it. Granted I use mine for work and I am sure my productivity increased a little each time or it at least made it easier to work with more layers in photoshop when doing web design.

Regardless, as someone who has grown up as an apple tech enthusiast, from way back in the 80’s and 90’s, it’s always exciting to unbox a modern apple product.

I work on a 10-core i9 27” iMac with 64GB ram and the 16GB Radeon pro 5700xt. It’s a wonderful machine.

But boy when those M1 ultras came out with the mac studio I was very tempted. Prior to owning iMacs I was a Mac Pro user. Always had the current Mac Pro with dual cinema displays. However I jumped to iMacs when the Mac Pro wasn’t updated in a long time. And now can’t really afford the new 2019 model. Granted, that’s the reason I have not yet jumped on a Mac studio and studio display just yet. The cost for the confit I want is still quite high. So I continue to save and maybe by the time I have enough money, the M2 ultra will be I. The studio.

Do I NEED the studio? No. My iMac is perfectly capable. Probably would last me another 3-5 years. But I want the new thing. I don’t want to spend those years not enjoying the best apple does.

I bought a Mac Studio when a Mac Mini would have been fine, I haven’t regretted it one bit

You sound a lot like me, but with more money. LOL! Hope you enjoy your new "toy".

(I just snagged a refurb 16/512/8 M1 MBA. I've been stealing my wife's (base M1 MBA) for almost a year now. She's sick of it. I'm so stoked! I also have a 2018 iPad Pro. I cannot break it, it's such a marvelous machine.)

Nice one :) What colour did you order?

I'm the same with tech, I love and find so much fascination in just how amazing these devices are. I think a lot of people these days don't ever really take a moment to realise just how mind blowing modern tech is, because it's everywhere. All of this tech has become so normal to us in life that it's like a natural part of our human world. We've managed to turn raw materials we found on our earth into devices that effortlessly perform trillions of operations per second, that are able to connect and communicate with each other all over the world, practically instantly, all while being able to do it all day long from anywhere on ultraportable batteries.

Sometimes it's just a want, and not a need, and that's perfectly fine.
100% agree. That's exactly why I traded in my 2020 Imac for the Mac Studio. Allowed/required me to rethink my desktop computing situation. The things these machines can do are truly incredible. As dangerous as AI can be, it is also a game changer.

For less than a night out drinking, you upgraded a laptop for daily use.

Seems sensible to me 🤓👍

I bought a factory sealed new 16/512 MBP on eBay In the beginning of July. What did you pay for your refurb

No need to justify yourself - "I wanted it and I could afford it" is a perfectly valid reason to buy something.

And I can't blame you, the M2 Air is a beauty. Even though I have an M1 Pro 16", I'm secretly wishing to also buy an Air, just because it's so cool.

nothing wrong on updating your gear, I would dare to even say that the reason is deeper i your subconscious. You said it, the M1 was already a perfect computer, but it came in an outdated chasis, at this point the M2 is what the M1 should have been done, a major redesign. Without knowing it, you at some extent took a very smart decision, getting the latest SoC from apple in a new chasis that will now become the long lasting form factor of these computer.. for how long? 5-10 more years?, by the time the M4 is out, they will still be looking the same, part of the value will be held by the device if you chose to sell it.

I'd do the same if I were you. In my case, I already have M1 Max, so I'm waiting for M2 Max to upgrade.

I usually go with space grey, but I went silver this time :)

I went with midnight originally and then changed my order to silver.

Midnight scares me as a scratch magnet. The only MacBook I had in the past that looked new for many years was classic silver. My space gray MacBooks looked terrible.

So I went with what I know won’t show scratches easily.

I feel ya!

Tech is my hobby too. I have an M1 MBA, and although I didn't buy the M2, I did get the 16" pretty much for pure "couch use".

As you mentioned, some folks like golf, boating, hunting or other expensive hobbies. I love my gadgets and I also like to try out (buy) all shapes and sizes of iPhones, iPads, MacBooks, if only to see the pros/cons myself hands-on.

Where’d you all trade them online? I was looking at trade prices wanting to upgrade more often but was discouraged at the low prices I saw.
I just traded mine online to apple through their trade program. I got $530 which is fine, I don't expect to do well on electronic items like this and I don't want to deal with selling it online myself.
