So you'd rather Apple just axe the lower-priced iPad and make the iPad Air the base iPad model and prevent people who don't want/need the additional features the Air has from having a lower cost model available to them? As the other poster said, what's wrong with more choices?

Some people feel threatened by more choices.

They don't seem to understand not everyone needs a laminated display or Pencil 2 support. The vast majority of consumers buying iPads for media consumption don't care about Lightning and Pencil 1.

It’s simply ridiculous how Apple severely gimped the iPad 10 while rising prices. It’s inexcusable that the iPad 10 still have an unlaminated display in 2022 when the iPad Air 2 had it around the same selling price when it came out. Also, iPad 10 still using Apple Pencil 1 is stupid, especially when they redesigned it. Not only that, the keyboard case made for the iPad 10 is only compatible with it, it doesn’t work if one decide to get an Air or Pro when someone decides to upgrade. It’s obvious that Apple intentionally gimped the iPad 10 to make it unattractive to upsell customers.

They should have taken the iPad Air 5, put an A14 and called it a day, or release the 10 at the same price of the 9th gen. Still, it’s silly to defend, the 10th gen iPad given it’s terrible value from much it’s gimped compared to the iPad Air 4 at its current price point..

Agreed, I still don’t understand how some people say having more choice is bad for the consumer. The $449 iPad has its own merits, particularly for those who want a sleek media consumption device.
More choice can be bad when it gets paralyzing. Jobs was big on this idea. I remember helping my grandmother order a new dell laptop years ago, and it was extremely confusing, even for me (a lot more tech savvy than the average consumer). 3 or 4 model lines and half a dozen or more configurations in every line with all kinds of overlap.

All of that said, I think the current iPad lineup is not anywhere close to that bad and is basically fine.

I think the issue is not really that it's a bad device, but rather that the pricing and certain choices are weird this time around. It's clearly very expensive for an entry-level iPad, and that's an issue in itself. $50 cheaper and this thing starts to seem like a much more reasonable deal. I'm not terribly bothered by the laminated screen for an entry-level product, but there again, you have two think about overall pricing. The Apple Pencil decisions are indefensible at any price point.

If you need to use an Apple Pencil and don't have one already, choose something else. If you don't have that need, this may be a good or even excellent product for you, albeit one that costs somewhat more than it should.

I still don't see the issue. If you think the Air 5 is a better deal, then buy the Air 5 and let those who don't care so passionately about the features you mention save some cash and get the 10th gen iPad.

But I think it's only on places like MR and the tech review community that such things are seen as a big deal. I think most of the general public just buys what they need and don't hyper-analyze Apple's decisions. Heck, I'm a techie and I don't make a big deal out of it either. Now obviously if it were some major, ridiculous issue then that would be different.

The 10th gen iPad isn’t a bad product on its own. The problem is that it doesn’t exist in a bubble. And people on these forums and/or tech reviewers discuss these “issues” because it helps other people make more informed decisions instead of just padding Apple’s bottom line without any forethought.

If you just do a little searching and waiting you can get a much better deal. The 4th gen iPad Air is on sale for Walmart right now for $349, all colors. You get a slightly faster chip, laminated screen, AP2 support, better speakers, etc. No centered landscape camera or $250 folio support but other than that it’s a much better package.

I'm not sure what you expected. It's basically a downgraded Air 4 with more color options. If you can get the Air at the same price you're getting a better product for the price. If you care more for the bright colors or landscape camera then that's fine. The appearance is probably what Apple is banking on to draw buyers in.

If that so, just get the 9th gen iPad instead for far cheaper. The 10th gen iPad is just a bad value if you just want to use it for consumption. Sure, it has a better screen, but for $100 more? I doubt it.

The pricing of the 10th gen is indefensible for what it is. If it had the same price as the 9th gen, it wouldn’t be as bad. As it stands, it’s pointless.

Saw the new iPad in the store, did not expect that it was so good. It struck me how light it was - especially in comparison to my 12.9”. A great device with a medium-sized screen. Would choose it over an iPad air any day. Regarding the pencil - I have no use of it. One day in the near-distant future I’ll upgrade to a basic iPad - the pro 12.9” is already put of my price range. Got the 2020 256GB for 1200€, nowadays the same model is 1500€. Bought it because it was the first (or second) iPad with a USB-C port.

The Air weighs less (458g vs 487g), has better specs, and you can buy it cheaper right now.

I don't have a problem with people simply helping people make informed decisions by giving out facts. What I do have a problem with is people getting all emotional over a frickin' iPad that nobody's being forced to buy, bad-mouthing Apple and/or the product simply because they personally don't see the value in it and assume everybody else in the whole wide world shares their specific sets of wants/needs for an iPad. Giving info: helpful. Ranting: not helpful.

I got my mom one after her 5th gen iPad suddenly broke, and she loves it. For her, the newer design and slightly larger screen (as well as the blue color) makes it a more exciting experience than if I had just gotten her a 9th gen, which looks, well, old.

The processor being a generation up from the 9th also makes it more likely that it will work better for longer. She was thrilled with the landscape camera too because she was always annoyed with the camera being on the side when she’d do FaceTime or zoom calls.

She has no interest in an Apple Pencil, doesn’t care about the USB speed because she will never use that port for anything but charging it, and doesn’t want to use a keyboard with her iPad so we don’t have to worry about a keyboard case.

As others have said, I truly wonder how many people complaining about this iPad would have even been considering an entry basic model. I don’t think my mom is that unique in that she mainly uses her iPad for Facebook, games, photos, and occasionally watching videos. She doesn’t need or want an Air.

When the original iPad first came out, remember that it was priced starting at $500, half of what was rumored, and that was with 16 gigs of storage. Today, that’s about $680. This new iPad is worth $449 imo.

From my perspective, the iPad keyboards across the lineup are crazy expensive for what they are.

I even got the Magic Keyboard for my iPad Pro on discount, but even then, I feel it’s severely overpriced. I won’t be buying another one anytime soon.
What about the folio case for the iPad Mini? A tiny sleeve for £69 ($79). Outrageous when you've already shelled out for the tablet and additional storage because the base 64GB is an insult.

If people buy it, then it's defensible. Yes, the 9th gen is still being sold as well. Isn't it great that consumers have all these choices?

It is a good device, just a bit over priced. Also those complaining that the iPad 10 does not have a laminated display. This is done on purpose because this entry level iPad is aimed at the educational sector, so screen breakages are common and thus much cheaper to repair if Non laminated.

Yep. It's only in the bubble of the forum world that you'll hear these devices trashed and hyper-analyzed. In real life, they're perfectly good devices that tons of people will get much productivity and enjoyment out of. Let us know what you decide!
I’d add that the average user (as opposed to enthusiasts and/or tech YouTubers and the like) sometimes goes years without upgrading. That makes the advancements seem a lot more pronounced.

I do agree that the price is too high, though.

I’m getting one myself. I have an M1 12.9, so this will be a good sidekick. And I have no need for a Pencil since I have it for my M1. Price is very reasonable — I was never the market for the $329 model.

How very DARE you buy a product that you want! When you know full well that there is a charging port that is unable to... umm.. move giant pieces of data as fast as some other ports do, despite the wireless connections being perfectly able to move said data. And ummm... there's something about the pencil, which many who never owned and will never use have been offended by. And I'm sure there's something wrong with the colors and the bezel and a notch maybe. And that such a purchase goes against the prevailing wisdom of those who reflexively dislike things!

Harrumph. I shall return when I find my pearls, for then I shall clutch them. Good day, sir! I say GOOD DAY.

/s, just in case that's needed, because it often is.

The use case you describe likely represents the vast majority of $329 and $449 iPad buyers. For most people, iPad is a fancy media consumption tablet. It's like the OLED vs. LCD argument. Most people can't tell the difference unless the two are put side by side. It's the same reason why XR and 11 sold so well.

Agreed, I still don’t understand how some people say having more choice is bad for the consumer
Does the world really need many countries producing the same thing, with each of these countries trying to sell its version of the same thing to the others? Do we really need dozens of different brands and still more different kinds of peanut butter in our supermarkets to choose from? By adhering to the laws of commerce, we delude ourselves into believing that the more choice we have, the better it is. This belief bears witness to believing in abundance, which began in the world as (part of) the American dream and became a world dream, and builds competitive societies wherein only the few are better off. All life on earth thrives only within boundaries. Hence, in the wake of this dream of abundance, we are destroying all life on earth. I do not think that having choice is bad, but rather than just implying that having more choice is good, I would like to see more and more people understand the need to fundamentally rethink how we relate to life and choose an approach that demonstrates an awareness of the need of embracing sufficiency for all rather than abundance for the few.

Literally everyone here complains about non-laminated display. Then everyone slaps a $8 screen protector on their laminated display making essentially the same as a laminated display. :)

I'm liking the laminated display on my new M2 Pro. I will NOT be using any protection on my 11 inch. Nor will I use a screen-protector. :)
Not everyone uses bad screen protector, and regardless a non laminated screen is more like a tempered glass screen protector, not like a thin antiglare one (such as paperlike or similar)
This imagine shows the difference between the black in the air and in the the 10 (looks almost like those comparisons mini-led vs standard lcd). You can also see the celing reflected on the screen.

I'd rather embrace abundance for all, so those who desire nothing more than sufficiency may have it, over sufficiency, which too easily becomes insufficiency and poverty.

Great. Now tell the class how many people routinely compare their iPad to another model in day-to-day use.
