Great. Now tell the class how many people routinely compare their iPad to another model in day-to-day use.
What's even the point of comparing in day-to-day use? If anything, people may compare in a shop before buying.... and when people want to buy something they generally either ask the person in the shop or they ask a friend or relative who is the "tech person" before going to a shop or buying online or if they are a bit more curious they look for reviews/comments online.
I think too many here assume that the iPad 10 is cheap and it's something people buy without even thinking (because it's only nerds who get information on products before buying, right?). Maybe in the States... here in Europe the iPad 10 is almost $600 and at that price people ask tech friends, if they have them, or look for reviews/comments online before buying and that's how they'll discover these difference between devices (screen, speakers, etc), not by blindly picking a device on Apple website and hoping it's going to be good.

At $329, it would absolutely destroy sales of the Air. $270 for M1, laminated screen, and pencil 2? Good luck with that.
At $449, it's a ripoff, especially given how gimped it is. That is why I decided to get my sister a 2018 iPad Pro 11 that is in mint condition as it has the same performance as the iPad 10 and better GPU, has Stage Manager, full USB 3 speeds, quad speakers, Apple Pencil 2 support, and works with the Magic Keyboard, which isn't made for one specific model like the iPad 10. That is a big step up from the iPad 2 she has. While it's a bit older, I suspect Apple will support it for a while given that iPads in general can't take full advantage of the hardware. I got the whole kit for little as $637 (iPad Pro 2018 11" 256 GB, new Apple Pencil 2 and Magic Keyboard case), which for the iPad 10, will set you back $800. Sure you get more years of updates, but the features you are getting, it's a bad value

All the compromises Apple made with the iPad 10 makes it a very bad deal, especially when you compare to refurbished iPad Air 4, iPad Pro 11" 2018/2020. I think it would made more sense if Apple just took the iPad Air, remove P3 support but keep the laminated display and put an A14 in it like they do with the iPhone SE. Seeing them redesign the iPad Air 4 to gimp it and raise the price while having Apple Pencil 1 support with a dongle is just dumb, especially when they don't price it $349. At $449, you are already getting a bit closer to an iPad Air 5, especially when they go on sale, which is currently at $519, which ruins the value proposition of the iPad 10.

Nobody should be defending the iPad 10, the fact that it still uses the Apple Pencil 1 and has a keyboard case that does not work with the iPad Air 5 and Pro 11 if someone wants to upgrade later to a more powerful one like a new Air or Pro, which makes the accessories they have for the iPad 10 useless. Therefore, you have to buy a new keyboard case and a pencil.

Sure, people will laugh at this post since they don't agree, but I do not want people get ripped off in buying a product that is a bad value for the money. There are better options that you can get at the same price that is better than the iPad 10 such as a refurbished iPad Air 4/Pro 2018 or 2020 or a new Air 5 on sale. It's just like with the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus. It's shameful that Apple released a new phone that is basically the same (besides the Plus) as last years model with a few features.

Agree with many here.

As a standalone device, the iPad 10 is a nice device. It's colorful, and feels fun to use.

The problem comes when one looks at it in the lineup. And the value diminishes even more when you start to add accessories with it. Worse that it uses old (1st gen Apple pencil) accessory with kludgy adaptor.

And the fact that Apple is keeping the iPad 9 in the lineup made it even more confusing.

Imo Apple should just discontinue the iPad 9, and put Pencil 2 compatibility on the iPad 10. Just make a clean break from lightning. Even with the price increase, that imo will look better as Apple already upped the Air price point anyway. For education, etc, Apple can keep the iPad 9 available through the special channels and partners.

Anyway, the confusion in the public seems to indicate Apple's waning prowess in marketing. Apple used to be the best in controlling the narrative.

Literally everyone here complains about non-laminated display. Then everyone slaps a $8 screen protector on their laminated display making essentially the same as a laminated display. :)

I'm liking the laminated display on my new M2 Pro. I will NOT be using any protection on my 11 inch. Nor will I use a screen-protector. :)
It's not that simple. A screen protector will make the screen feel different sure, but it's does nothing for color reproduction.

At the end of the day, the 2014 iPad Air 2 has a higher quality display with better colors than the 2022 iPad 10th generation.

Adding a screen protector doesn’t make a non-laminated display look laminated. The lamination specifically fills the air gap between the glass and LCD screen to reduce glare and reflections.

Excellent point.

I found this point made similarly here as well: "Because of the absence of the air gap, the light and produced image from the display screen is brighter and clearer. The result is better visibility, especially when the involved device is used in a strongly lit environment or under sunlight."

Edit: Link doesn't work even when citing, but it's from XP Pen.

It's a cool device to use, nothing wrong with that.
The issues are with having to use the Pencil 1, charging it with an adapter and a separate cable and getting a price increase over the previous generation.

So you'd rather Apple just axe the lower-priced iPad and make the iPad Air the base iPad model and prevent people who don't want/need the additional features the Air has from having a lower cost model available to them? As the other poster said, what's wrong with more choices?

What a strange way to defend a company who doesn't even know who you are.
What the user was arguing was for a lower price on the 10th gen iPad, if anything.

What does them "knowing who I am" have anything to do with anything? If I see nonsense being bandied about, I'll address it, regardless of whether it's about a company or a person and whether I know them or not.

Yeah, obviously everyone wants everything to be cheaper. However, reality doesn't normally work that way. Prices normally go UP, not down. The fact remains, however, that of the new models released, the iPad 10th gen is the cheapest. And if that's still too expensive for someone, they can either go with the 9th gen which is still a great iPad or wait for used/refurbished 10th gens to come out. But I guess in this culture of instant gratification / "I want exactly what I want right NOW" that's not a popular idea. Oh well. Tough.

I’m glad people like it. I had it in the cart to upgrade my mom’s 5th Gen and only then did I see the price. I was flabbergasted. Quickly ordered the 9th Gen for $269 on Amazon.

She loves it. Touch ID works for her on the 9th as it didn’t on the 5th. It’s like magic to her (I guess the iPad can be magical).

Anyway, for light users, the 9th makes more sense. I just wonder what happens next year. Will the only base model cost $450? If so, Apple has screwed up.

To each his own. If you like it and it serves your needs and you felt the price was right then more power to you.

I just have a few things that make me go hmmm? Like the pencil 1 support is pretty stupid but I guess if you don't use it then it is a non issue. The second is the screen. No major tablet maker other than Apple even makes a tablet with a non-laminated screen. Air gapped screens have a few issues and on top of that no AR coating. Then you have the price at $450 or close to $500 with tax. I have seen the iPad air 5 on sale for $519 and I am sure there will be sales where it goes even lower. I was able to get one for $549 and a $100 Apple gift card making it cost $449 which is the same price as the 10. Even for $100 or $70 more I think the M1 with 8gb ram, laminated screen with ar coating and Apple pencil 2 support make it worth the extra money. I don't think the a14 is much faster than the a13?

So to me if I just wanted a basic iPad the 9th gen makes more sense as you can find it for $279 and it may even go down to $249 at some point making it $200 cheaper than the 10 and it has an earphone jack which no other iPad has. The screen is basically the same as the 10 but the 10 is a little bigger.

I like the design of the 10 but if they are going to charge $449 it just seems to much more than the 9. I would have liked to see the same specs at $379 or $349 and then it would have been an awesome device for the money and the issues it has would have been more forgivable as it would still be very affordable.

Also I have seen a lot of sales on a new iPad air 4th gen for $499 and I bet again it will get closer to that $449 price point at which point it makes no sense to get a 10th gen. So on almost every conceivable point it is a head scratcher. Why not just keep the air 4 around and reduce the price and phase out the 9th gen? It would have made more sense to just have the 9th gen iPad and the air 4th gen as it's replacement and charge $449 for it moving forward and call it iPad.

This is a big machine. I am using it for my dog who has tracheal collapse. Totally helps. I do have to fill the water each day. Doesn't leak and cools the room. Will be nice on these warmer days as well.

The iPad Air 4 with a laminated screen is currently on sale for 350 at Walmart. While do like the center facing camera, I think the Air 4 at this price makes more sense not to mention you can use the Apple Pencil 2.

It's a great deal. We just bought one for my mom. It will be a huge upgrade from her iPad Air 2!

iPad Pro = best hardware for a tablet on the market for those who absolutely have to have the best toy and the few who actually can make use of the Pro’s capabilities.
iPad Air = a detuned iPad Pro for those who don’t want to pay for a Pro.
iPad 10th Gen = an overpriced detuned iPad Air for those who don’t want to pay for an Air.
iPad 9th Gen = what most people want and expect from an iPad for a reasonable price.
iPad Mini = a way overpriced iPad Air mini me for the few who want something to fit into a bag.

A 64 GB Wi-Fi 2018 11” iPad Pro refurb is $469 from apple right now. If you paid $637 for a 256 GB model plus a new pencil and keyboard case then I’m guessing you’re talking about a used iPad. Which is fine, but you can’t compare a used device to a brand new one. Of course there are always going to be better deals out there on used devices.

this is unquestionably a better deal than the new iPad, but it will not last forever (will sell out and/or sale will end). If you’re in the market, definitely pounce on it.

The 10th gen iPad is undoubtedly in an odd spot compared to the rest of the lineup, but keep in mind it’s meant to be discounted. Usually with this kind of product it sits at MSRP for a couple of months to capture the FOMO buyers, and then the sales start hitting across different retailers.

I got my mom one after her 5th gen iPad suddenly broke, and she loves it. For her, the newer design and slightly larger screen (as well as the blue color) makes it a more exciting experience than if I had just gotten her a 9th gen, which looks, well, old.

The processor being a generation up from the 9th also makes it more likely that it will work better for longer. She was thrilled with the landscape camera too because she was always annoyed with the camera being on the side when she’d do FaceTime or zoom calls.

She has no interest in an Apple Pencil, doesn’t care about the USB speed because she will never use that port for anything but charging it, and doesn’t want to use a keyboard with her iPad so we don’t have to worry about a keyboard case.

As others have said, I truly wonder how many people complaining about this iPad would have even been considering an entry basic model. I don’t think my mom is that unique in that she mainly uses her iPad for Facebook, games, photos, and occasionally watching videos. She doesn’t need or want an Air.

When the original iPad first came out, remember that it was priced starting at $500, half of what was rumored, and that was with 16 gigs of storage. Today, that’s about $680. This new iPad is worth $449 imo.
I agree with you except that you need to look at the pricing in the lineup. original iPad was one model only so there was no choice in features.

In that regard it’s about 50 USD too expensive but it makes sense. We need to pay back that R&D. They will likely keep this price point until 2024 when they may discontinue the iPad 9 (because USB-C EU law) and then lower it to 399 USD at some spec bump upgrade then.

I’ve already replied to this thread, but my question is…

What will be the base model NEXT year? How much will it cost? That $329 price tag has been dialed in for around four years now. It’s what people expect. It’s what many people can afford. And it’s the best selling iPad.

So what now? If Apple still sells the 9th Gen next year at $329, they can go to hell. The average person won’t know their software/security updates will be extremely limited time-wise going forward.

I don't think there is anyone that would say the 10th gen iPad isn't a good device. It was the most exciting iPad that Apple released this year. I think the only negative is that they raised the price but overall its a very solid product.

Yep. It's only in the bubble of the forum world that you'll hear these devices trashed and hyper-analyzed. In real life, they're perfectly good devices that tons of people will get much productivity and enjoyment out of. Let us know what you decide!
Exactly. Let’s face it, it’s the best base level iPad they have ever made. People seem to be forgetting that haha.
