There's absolutely no compelling reason I can imagine to pay a flagship price for an Android phone. You'll still get ~24 months of software updates at the absolute max, and you'll have meh resale value. At least you can count on 4-5 years of updates with an iPhone.

Personally, mid-range Android is where the value is.
The performance of iPhones equals that of $150 budget phones at around 3 years. That's why Android manufacturers don't bother updating beyond 2 years. You still get security updates for 3 years.

The fact is, in this test SAF proves the iPhone 8 camera is junk. DXO needs to have their eyes checked.

I’ve only had a chance to take a couple of casual shots with the 8+. Sadly the weather has been terrible and work has been chaotic.

However in those casual shots the 8+ did prove more capable at capturing detail, color and sharpeness better than the 7+.

I have no idea how it compares to my Galaxy S8+ yet. I’ll find that out later in the week.

Completely agree, I picked up a brand new 2017 A5 for -132$ from my carrier with no contract. They had a promo that if I upgraded my phone, my bill would be credited 8$ a month for 24 months. I picked the A5 for 360$ they gave me 250$ Pre paid mastercard, I got a 50$ credit for trading in a flip phone and I save 192$ over 24 months. I did not even have to pay the 310$ (360-50)upfront, they just add 13 dollars a month for 24 months.

There is no way I will buy high end phones when my carrier keeps giving me free stuff. Currently I pay 41$ Canadian a month for unlimited calling/text with 6Gb of data, it goes back up to 49 after that 24 month promo

Features possibly, but performance? That’s a bit of a stretch.

I think most android manufacturers don’t bother updating their products due to the return on investment just not being there; they make nearly all their money on hardware sales alone.

Apple is making money off hardware, software, services and their own accessories so every device is a revenue machine long after purchase.

I myself thought it was very close whereas in prevuous years the Samsung flagship had a clear lead. Despite all the number crunching from the DXO mark review from what I've seen so far the 8 plus camera does look to be an improvement over the 7 plus.

The 7+ camera was just average at best. It’s was not until I got my Galaxy S8+ when I realized how unimpressive the 7+ camera actually was.

I think the issue is the 7+ camera required damn near ideal conditions to get a good shot, while the S8+ seems to capture a quality image in everything but the poorest conditions.

Portrait mode was a good feature (when it works) but the standard shooter was meh. I did realise this as I had a S7 edge prior to getting the 7 + and I was bitterly disappointed at the start. I even posted about it on these forums.

Got to admit the live focus on note 8 does look good

For some reason on my 7 plus I can never get it to work very well..it never blurs the background and the picture looks average

It only works well outside in good lighting for me. The selective focus on the note works better inside but I haven't had a chance to try it outside yet.

Huh? I think the iPhone 6s will outperform budget phones next year when it becomes 3 years old. The A9 processor is pretty solid, especially considering the Snapdragon series are like 200 or 400 at the $150 range.

I have Canadian family members that do not buy phones at launch or even in the first few months because the prices are hard to swallow. Many family members can afford it, but it is not a smart "investment" or smart "purchase."

If I lived in Canada, I would own one of the following devices:

S7 Edge, iPhone 7, iPhone SE, Moto X Pure Edition, Nexus 6P, or OnePlus 3. Hell, I am at the point where I would go last year's model soon once my Note 8 experiences its last legs. I am done paying high end prices for smartphones. I only got the Note 8 because of a solid deal.

I always find it funny when people switch and then want to act like the iPhone is trash. I just spent the last two and half months with an S8+ and it is a really nice phone, but ultimately I like the iPhone better so I'm getting the X.

Glad you are enjoying your Note 8, but throwing around phrases like "blows it out of the water" is just the new phone glow causing you to say silly things. Both great phones, both suit different people in different ways.

I agree, I have both and like both equally. Android just suits my taste better but I don't go and bash my iPhone into the ground.

At the same time though, many unshackle themselves from iOS and its expensive cost of ownership. Apple has so many peripherals to get a phone like adapters to use wired headphones or $75 quick charge out of the box. It took till iOS 11 to get HEVC support. Plus the iPhone 8 is just a 6SSS. Gotta hold Apple accountable for its laziness.

THe pricing makes it trash in many countries. The Note 8 costs as much as an iPhone 8 Plus in some countries.

Any place but here or there....
I was ready to pay the 100 to replace my device but my store kept saying they disregard when people say their phone is hot because phones get hot. They mostly refused to acknowledge the idea of me getting a replacement and always shooed me away for 9 months. I probably should have caused a scene but I do blame myself for just letting them have their way with me

I would still email Tim Cook and explain these situations politely. You should not have phones that heat up (much less the bs you went through with the 6s.) By emailing Cook, I've always had Apple fix the issue even if it was a month out from the experience. I had rotten iPhone activation experiences at my usual Apple store for the last part of 2016 and finally had enough with the third screw up and emailed Cook. I heard back almost 3 weeks later from the store manager and everything was sorted.

You were absolutely in the right with the phones getting hot. Also, I can use debit cards for Apple purchases constantly (I know you need a cc for the iPhone upgrade program though.)

Wish you all the best with your phones whatever brand they might be.

As an update to a thread I statted several days ago...

After 10 years of iPhone ownership, I sold my iPhone 7 Plus and went to the Note 8. After a week of use, I can confidently conclude that for me, the Note 8 is an amazing phone that absolutely blows the iPhone out of the water in functionlaity and customization. I even traded my Series 2 watch in for a Gear 3 and find it to be a much watch better much for my purposes. Apple seems to be mostly about curves and design aesthetics. The rigidity of iOS is counter-productive.

Maybe the Note 8 is the first truly amazing phone form Samsung, I don’t know. But I have definitely found an absolute winner in the Note 8 and have no regrets leaving the iPhone behind. At work, few people were happy with Apple’s September iPhone event. They knew me as a major Apple fan and thought I would be the last to leave Apple. There may very well be more than average defectors this upgrade cycle. Our family has three more iPhones to converts, which we will do in October.

You've been duped by marketing for a decade?

Makes sense.

I ordered the s8+ cancelled and the note en route
I just going to try first

Make sure you watch some of the tutorials online, and also go to the androidcentral web site, under Note 8, for more hints and tips. Pay particular attention to the s-pen ideas and tutorials. Truly great what you can do with the S-pen. It's not just for writing.

For me being new to Android, it's taken me a week and several hours to be deprogrammed from the iPhone way of thinking, but the Note 8 is truly great if you spend time looking at all the features. Like leaving any over-controlling cult, the deprogramming takes patience and time. (Of course, I'm still a member via my iPad and MBP, but at least I have ventured beyond the wall!)

I wouldn't say the iPhone is "trash" at all, but it is VERY limited in what it can do from a productivity standpoint. Apple has decided what is best for its users. The Note 8 lets you decide that for yourself.

I love how some people vehemently defend Apple or even act like Apple is immune to criticism on this site, but mainly outside the Alternatives sub-forum.

Gotta be in it to win it
Apple is the best thing since sliced bread for many here on this site. I use to think that way till I started to use other devices. Apple is far from the best. But people won't ever see that if that is all they use.
Which totally objective source is making the determination how far or near Apple is to the best.

Awwwwww thanks ! And i didn't know emailing cook would actually make things happen. I'll definitely do that next time I have any issues. For phone replacements over the phone you can either have them send you a device and you have the hold placed on a cc(they told me if I used a debit card the purchase would go through and refunds are a hassle) or I send my device to them first and once they get it then they'll send me a device back(so without a phone for a week). I try to get replacements directly from Apple since I don't trust my Apple store.

I had a S8 plus but returned it for the Note 8. Don't bog down my phone with a lot of apps but the 2gb more RAM should help IMHO.
I bought the S8+ in June and then bought my Note 8 on release day. I am keeping both. I have three lines on T-Mobile. Both of these phones are excellent and on the S8+, i've never run into a situation so far where my apps that I have opened, reload.

AS for iPhones, I have a SE, 6S and 6S+ and apps will reload on these phones more times then I can count in a day. This is frustrating me so much lately that I've pretty much decided to never buy an iPhone/iPad ever again.

Depends on what your requirements are. iOS is more limited but less confusing while Android allows more freedom and versatility but not everyone need that. Like the golf cart and Tesla they're both electric but different approaches. Some people look forward to driving their golf cart around in their community all weekend. Others need more freedom and versatility of a Tesla.
