If you use "Samsung Link", make sure you kill it before going to standby. I like the Samsung Link app but it will drain your battery if you don't manually kill it or force close.

This is what turned me off of Android. I had a VZW Galaxy Nexus and the thing would eat batteries for breakfast. I rooted it, employed kernel tweaks, software tweaks, etc. etc, and could not get a decent battery life. And it took forever to charge, even with fast charge. I had several different batteries as well.

The thing I like about iOS is that it won't turn on the device until it has enough charge to stay on. The galaxy nexus would turn on while connected to a car charger and turn right back off again because it didn't have enough charge to stay on. When using it for GPS directions in the car, it would actually drain while connected to the car charger. I've never had an iOS device drain while connected to a charger.

The previous Android I had, the Thunderbolt was just as bad. Maybe I just had bad luck, I don't know, but I find my VZW iPhone 5 battery life to be stellar. Even when I get below 20%, I can still eek out a couple more hours,at least, if I turn the screen brightness down. And my iPhone 5 charges very fast, and doesn't require any fast charge tweaks.

Is there a similar Android device in terms of charging speed to iPhone 5? The iPhone 5 never takes more than a couple hours to fully charge, whereas my Galaxy Nexus could be on the charger overnight and not be fully charged in the morning.

Do agree on battery charging time it takes a good hour or 2 longer to charge than my iphone 5 but battery life is generally good like my iphone 5.. It lasts me all day.

Usage time is alot different on s4 than on iphone 5

Two hours in the gym listening to music would go down as two hours usage on the s4? Won't count to your screen time so it is misleading on the iphone with the usage time.

I experienced the same thing on both Android phones and iPhones. This is why I quit using 3rd party chargers. I also just started to use AC inverters and it makes a huge difference compared to any normal car charger.

I have a $5 USB car charger that I use with my official lightning cable for my iPhone and it works fine. But my experience with the Galaxy Nexus was with the car charger Verizon sold me with it. I don't like AC inverters as they add noise to the audio output.

I'll probably get flamed for this but I don't think Samsung make very good CDMA phones compared to their GSM variants. The Galaxy Nexus was a shining example of this. Maybe some of their newer CDMA phones are better I have no experience with them so I can comment.

Thunderbolt being the first LTE phone was a massive battery hog. The radio just being installed in the phone (even off in settings) was a battery hog. I actually believe this is where the whole "Turn LTE off for better battery" thing got started. I'm not saying that weak LTE signal can't be a battery hog but nothing like the Thunderbolt.

The two phones you used are indicative to pretty bad luck when it comes to battery life.

While current radio tech is much better Android devices will still generally charge slower then an iPhone just due to sheer battery size. Plus they are charging via USB. An Android device using different charging method is much better. My Xoom for example uses a somewhat rare charger (not proprietary however) and charges a 6000 mAh battery as fast as my iPhone charges its 1440 mAh battery. Then you have the amps of the charger which can make a sizable difference. I use a slow charging USB outlet for my iPhone at night. 500 mAh I believe (?).

It will take 4 hours to charge my iPhone from 0-100%.

This seems to be a common problem.

There are times my Nexus 4 will drop 3% in the 15 minutes it took me from unplugging it to driving to work. Went to bed last night and the battery was at 65%. Woke up and it was completely drained and shut off.

Nexus 7, drains 20% in six hours doing absolutely nothing.

iPad Mini was at 100% in the same six hours doing nothing. My iPad Mini is winning the game and I'm thinking about dumping both Androids and never looking back. I want devices that can last all day when I actually uses them.

There is no such thing as an Android device that does nothing :). You're running a flavour of UNIX, and that never does nothing, as long as the device is switched on.

A device running iOS, OTOH, is doing virtually nothing when it is in Standby. Other than some very efficient background tasks to handle notifications, an iOS device is pretty much sleeping, when in standby.

This effects data consumption, and is worth being aware of if you have an Android device on a limited data plan. For example, when I was constantly using an iPhone 3GS, I'd use at most 150 mb of mobile data each month. My Samsung S3 OTOH will use 2-3mb while I'm sleeping. Of course, this is mitigated by having the phone connected to WiFi (and having it set to stay connected to WiFi, when in standby).

I'm very happy with my standby, brightness at full with all bells and whistles activated. Very little screen time as I don't use my phone much at the weekend and this thread is about standby. :)

How do you do screen shots as in loading them on here? Those are amazing stats. Mine currently 44 percent left with 21 hours.

I use the photobucket app to send my photo straight to my photobucket account, from there I copy and paste the link into my post. :)
Can you not pick photo's straight from the folder on your phone to post? I use tapatalk and it allows this but appreciate not everyone likes tapatalk. :)

I suppose I could, but I'm comfortable with the way I do it TBH, I'm not a Tapatalk fan, I uninstalled it because I enjoy the browser better and it used quite a bit of battery. :)

Oh right I hadn't thought about tapatalk draining the battery. Perhaps I'll kill the app when I've finished as I've found Facebook drains the battery quite a abit when left open in the background. Pesky apps. :)

Thats not shoddy at all. :) Facebook and Twitter will also use up a fair bit of battery. Nice one. :)

In fairness that's my best stats for a while as it was mainly on wifi. Still least I know generally it will last me the day which is all we can really ask for out of our phones. Got to admit having the removable battery is huge. Last few days my phone has almost died before heading back out again and I've just switched it over.. Perfect. One of the best features from switching from the iPhone I've got to say.

Gotta say, this has to be one of my favorite things about the iPad mini - epic battery life.

This usage includes a couple of games of FIFA 13 online with my sister as she recovers from knee surgery as well - not simply music playing. Mostly web browsing and some games.

EDIT: Also getting great battery life out of my HTC One and iPhone 5 (running iOS 7) - currently both have been off the charger for roughly 8.5 hours and both are sitting at around 80% with some light usage (about an hour and a half screen time each).

That's worse than the S3 i used to have, no offense.

Do you use auto brightness or full brightness all the time?

Nope.. It's around 30-40 percent.. I get a huge amount of twitter notifications.. Sometimes as many as 30 plus most nights . so all in all pretty happy with the stats there.. No different to my iPhone 5 and sometimes better.
