Just picked up a mint 12.9” 2nd gen model for an insane deal on swappa last week. I have been wanting the larger pro for a while now but was determined to wait until the next gen. However, this price was just too good to pass up. Loving this iPad so far! The extra screen real estate is amazing and it’s actually not as unwieldy as some on the internet have made it out to be. The only thing that would get me to upgrade now would be a significant reduction in weight. I’m actually quite skeptical of Face ID on an iPad. I can see myself having to lean over the iPad whenever it is on my desk to get a face scan, which doesn’t sound like a great experience. Face ID is also slower than the 2nd gen Touch ID sensor, so it won’t be a selling point to get me to upgrade.

Whats the question? Do people like picking up bargains when new technology comes out? seems some do.
Or is the question does FaceID scare people away in particular? seems a lot of repliers in particular don't like the idea of FaceId. I am glad to see at least a couple people have actually tried (and apparently didn't like face ID) before commenting.

As for me, I tend to hold on to devices, so I buy the latest tech when I do buy... and I love faceID on my iPhone X. really is convenient because I naturally hold my phone up anyway, not so sure its the same with the pad. But given how quick and easy FaceID already is for me, yeah, I suppose it doesn't scare me away enough to make me change my habits of buying the latest tech.

Got a flawless open box 10.5 for $425 at Micro Center yesterday. They’ve had all Pro’s $150 off for a while, but a savings of $225 on the model I wanted was too good to pass up.
Dang! Beat me by $40. I got my open box 10.5 at Microcenter, too.

On Sunday it was listed with the same price you paid, but I resisted. Yesterday, after your post I looked to see if it was still there and the price was lower.

It’s just what I needed and would have been thrilled with this model at their $499 sale price had I had the sense to buy it first.

I treated myself to the leather Smart Cover with the $75 open box savings.

I haven’t had an iPad for years so this Pro is a big treat. I’d tried the 9.7” but my iPhone X had spoiled me for True Tone. I also wanted the four speakers and promotion. I loved the 12.9 but found it too bulky after week one honeymoon.* At this size and bargain price, I won’t be afraid to actually use the thing instead of babysitting it at home.

It will serve me well until the new models coming this year are discounted someday.

*edit: 12.9 would be great for me if I could justify having both.

I pulled the trigger on an iPad Pro 10.5 256gb Verizon that was 1 week old on a reseller site for $615 shipped. Price outweighed the hype and wait on the next iteration of the Pro.

You can expect a 25-30% price drop compared to the original price.

Current generation refurbished iPads receive a 15% discount. Once a new model is out, the previous generation refurb model receives a 25-30% discount. The best example of this is the refurbished iPad (2017).

After the 25-30% discount, the product will receive no further discounts. As an example, the iPad Air 2 is $289. Kind of ridiculous as no one in the right mind would choose the Air 2 over the iPad (2018).

Why would it be so outlandish to choose an Air 2 over the 2018 iPad? Correct me if I’m wrong but doesn’t the Air 2 have a laminated screen while also being thinner, lighter, and cheaper?

The Air 2 has an A8X that doesn't support ARKit and is nearly 4 years old. That age has consequences for future iOS support.

Based on survey data, most tablet users operate their devices indoors as an entertainment device. A laminated display makes little difference indoors.

The iPad (2018) has an A10, supports Pencil, and has a 20% bigger battery. Compared to the Air 2, the additional weight and thickness are imperceivable. The Air 2 is only available as a refurbished product which means most credit cards do not offer free extended warranty for that device.

It's a no-brainer to go for the iPad (2018) unless someone belongs to a niche group and demands a laminated display at all costs.

Also has vibrating speakers and screen distortion thrown in.

I’ll sell my 10.5” if the new iPad even just has a haptic home button, (I hate the physical button.) I really want Face ID, but I honestly care more about the home button being erased, processor, RAM, and size.
I hope “The Modern iPad” is what will be the main flagship iPad, and will be 11.5-12”

Kallum.

picked one up (10.5) the other day. Love it thus far i hate the face ID on my X no matter what anyone says it is cumbersome and takes longer to use than touch id. by the time i could get the touch id to my face the phone was open and ready to go the opposite is true with face id.

Unless the next iPad Pro has 6gb of ram, I would save money and go with a 10.5 as the current one is more then capable for most tasks and keeping iOS smooth.
I agree, but I will like to add that the current 2017 Pro's are more than capable for all tasks on the iOS platform currently. As long as Apple don't release borked up versions of iOS, the 2017 Pro's should run very well in the future.

I have the 10.5 now, but I will be upgrading to the new iPad Pro when available. I am looking forward to the new design, Face ID 2, gestures, and any screen enhancements. I'll sell ya my 10.5 though if ya want.
I’m going back and forth. I have a specific set of circumstances that are dictating my decision. If it’s not a redesign and just a slightly stretched screen in roughly the same size chassis, as well as the same old ASK in the new size, I will most likely not upgrade. But if it’s a redesign and something new is brought to the table keyboard wise, I’m going to go ahead and upgrade from the 10.5” to the new size. My problem is that I finally have a keyboard case that I’m in love with, and I know there won’t be a version of it available right away at launch.

I just ordered a used one on
eBay, which is usually what’s I do. I find by ordering mid cycle and getting gently used I save a good amount and lose less in depreciation. As a college student that is essential for me being able to afford tech products I want but don’t really need. The 2018 iPad is more than enough for annotating my research articles, but when I find a used 10.5 for around 100 more that is hard to pass by.

I like Face ID on my iPhone X, but I’m not sure that it will be as good on an iPad. At work, I have my iPad laying down next to my work laptop so as I can write notes on the screen. It’s easy to wake up with my fingers on the home button, just by reaching my hand out to it, even if my eyes are still on my work laptop screen. I think that Face ID will require me to pay closer attention to the iPad to unlock it and may even mean that I have to lean over it to unlock it with my face. Having said that, it’s not a deal breaker, if bezels are slimmer and weight is reduced, then I might be tempted, especially if the screen is larger than 10.5 with reduced bezels all around. The bezels on the side of the 10.5 are good and I’d be happy to see those on the top an bottom, especially if they can hide the Face ID camera in the bezel and have no notch.
I actually have both the 10.5 and 12.9 2017, so feel some ‘guilt’ to upgrade unless the iPad in perhaps an 11.5 and I replace both iPads with the one....otherwise, I might pick one of my iPads to upgrade this year and leave the other for the next upgrade.

You have a great point here that I had not yet considered—I use my iPad Pro flat down on my desk quite a bit for note taking. That could be a situation where FaceID is not as good on iPad. Maybe a second gen FaceID system will be ok with that.

if faceID will still work only in portrait mode...probably i will stay with the 10.5" for another year

If the iPads had better resale value I would upgrade, but I have found it much more difficult to make it cost effective to upgrade iPads every year. And as said above the 10.5 is a killer device already.

That and I have found that the new features just don't do enough for me to upgrade nearly as frequently as I once did.

Once I got my 9.7" iPP, I've had no desire to upgrade on features, especially as I'd essentially get nothing for my current device after selling it (ok - not nothing - but so little as to make it a huge barrier to any upgrades).
