The only way to make upgrading less damaging to the wallet is to buy refurbished or used in mint condition. I have saved £800/$1,000 buying my TV, Soundbar and recent phone that way.

With the iPad couldn't as I got a killer trade in value for the iPad 3 and had a 10% discount code at Currys.

I'm a sucker for new tech, but as I've just had my 14 month old 10.5 replaced under warranty it's pretty much brand spanking new. Think I'll be holding on to my 10.5 for another year unless there is something I can't live without. Slightly bigger screen, FaceID and less bezel really doesn't fit that category.

I like Face ID on my iPhone X, but I’m not sure that it will be as good on an iPad. At work, I have my iPad laying down next to my work laptop so as I can write notes on the screen.

That’s exactly my fear too. My 10.5” iPad Pro goes to work with me every day as my notebook. I’m tempted by the 11” screen rumors but I always have it lying flat on my desk. Having to angle it towards my face might be a pain.

Whenever I upgrade to a newer iPad, I always got the newest model available. But for the first time I'm tempted to get a previous gen 10.5 model for cheap when the new iPad Pros come out (presumably with no bezels and Face ID).

Assuming a new 256GB LTE goes for $930, based on history, the previous gen might go for around $630 which is a $300 savings. Is anyone waiting for the new iPads to come out simply so you can get the 10.5 for cheap? The only road bump to my plan is if the Face ID model really does look amazing.
I’ll never get an Apple device with a home button again. Face ID is what I’ve wanted since Ipad day one.

Would it really be too much of a stretch to put it in a standing case?

The Apple Smart Cover can lie the iPad pretty flat. Seems to me pretty certain that Apple wouldn't ship it if Face ID didn't work at least at that angle.

I can’t wait for the new 12.9” - and face id over touch any day. I rarely have problems with face id on my iPhone X. But I am constantly having issues with touch on my iPP. I am also an ex-Samsung - so I LOVE bezel-less....

the only issue i have with face id is how slow it is compared to touch. anyone that says they havent had ANY issues with face ID is not telling the truth. Guarantee they have had to look and swipe a few times at least once.

Ok so yes i have had a few times where it would not connect. One eye is closed because i am not awake, or i turn away.... But i very rarely open my touch on the ipad without multiple touches from different angles.

Interesting, definitely not my experience with touchID. I have 4 fingers registered (index and thumb for each hand) and have no issues with any of them. When registering them I made sure to rotate my fingertips for each scan that was required.

I'm curious what your screen timeout and security settings are on your devices though. Wouldn't it bother you if you had to pick up the tablet and look at it every time the screen went off? That's basically what worries a lot of us who are inexperienced with FaceID - at least for me anyway.

For me (and I'm sure I'm not alone) my company locks down screen timeout and security options to the point that my iOS devices automatically turn off the screen after 2 minutes of inactivity and immediately lock when the screen goes off. That means that I MUST authenticate every time I need to use it when the display is off . . which happens to me many times a day when I leave the tablet on the table. These security settings are pushed to my device as soon as I set up my company email on it so I have zero control over them.

Having to pick up my 12.9 inch IPP each time my face is out of range of FaceID is going to be inconvenient for me so I really hope that FaceID is improved to the point where it minimizes this. I've read about some tricks to improve things for people who want to unlock when the iPhoneX is flat on a table (set up faceID while the phone's flat on a table to improve accuracy) so maybe that combined with generational improvements to the technology will help. Fingers crossed.

Definitely the newer ones. Now that I’m used to the iPhone X bezels on a device like the iPad are harder to get used to.

It depends on price. The 10.5 has been on sale in the past for $500 (64gb). If the new iPhone X style Pro costs $800 for 64gb, I will wait and buy a 10.5 for $500 when I can. I won't pay an extra $300 for Face ID (which I don't like on the phone but would actually tolerate on an iPad) and an .5 inch increase in screen size.

TBH I was hoping the new iPads would have OLED but it appears they won't so I may keep my 10.5", especially as it was recently replaced under AC+

Same here. I typically use my index finger to unlock if my iPad is laying flat on my desk. Much easier than using a thumb.

If you insist on always using your thumb, then yeah, it may take a few tries.

i don't give a rat's butt about face id on the iPad so if thats the only difference yes I will save myself some money and get the clearance model. if there are other changes then I need to see what they are before I can say what I might get

I’m having a horrific experience with my iPad Pro 10.5 due to bugs, that buying a new one won’t do it. I’m “scarred” for life by the 10.5, lol! But I really badly want the 11-inch because I want more screen in splitview... even if it’s just 0,5-inch.

Best Buy has $125 off the 10.5 iPad Pro right now for the Labor Day sale. Plus an extra $50 off if you are a student. Plus I have $70 in Best Buy rewards certificates that expire in 2 weeks....I've always wanted the 10.5 Pro. Maybe now is a great time to buy it with all those discounts...What do you think? This model iPad is over year old though.......decisions decisions....

I’d go for it!!

I like FaceID for the iPhone X. I'm sure I would get used to it on the iPad.

I just need confirmation that it will unlock the iPad in both portrait and landscape mode. I use my iPad almost exclusively in landscape mode.

The only way I'd pass on the new iPad is if its Face ID only worked in Portrait mode. That can't happen surely, as it'd be the dumbest decision to come from Apple.

So I'm confident I'll be making use of the new iPad's Face ID.

I won’t buy a 10.5” (but if Best Buy’s current $475 for the 10.5” is still going next week... I’ll snag one for my mom, then give my pops the 9.7” iPad Pro gen 1.5.
475 is an incredible deal.

Kallum.

I believe tomorrow is the last day for the sale.
