I'm not really sure why this argument was posed as "new faceID iPad or old iPad?"... For me, FaceID would be one of the smaller reasons to upgrade. For all intents and purposes on my iPhone X, I find FaceID to be neutral (if I have to pick, slightly negative) vs TouchID. The faster processor and edge-to-edge display would be more what piques my interest. But of course, we don't really have any idea what the new iPad Pro's will feature

Same. I’m a bit bewildered by all the Face ID vs Touch ID talk. Both are a bit of a gimmick to me, half the time neither work for me and I just type in my password, and none of that bugs me to be honest. Far more interested in an edge to edge display and better designed keyboard solution.

I agree, for me it's all about the physical design (edge to edge) display and how that extra .5 inch to 11 inches will feel like. It will have to be something amazing to make me want to spent $700 - $750 for a 64gb model when I can get a 10.5 Pro at ~$500 by then. Speed-wise, I don't really care as the 10.5 will remain sufficiently powerful for the next couple of years.

I like FaceID for the iPhone X. I'm sure I would get used to it on the iPad.

I just need confirmation that it will unlock the iPad in both portrait and landscape mode. I use my iPad almost exclusively in landscape mode.

i'm the same and frankly its just not that big of a deal to me to lift up my thumb to the touch id

The only way I'd pass on the new iPad is if its Face ID only worked in Portrait mode. That can't happen surely, as it'd be the dumbest decision to come from Apple.

So I'm confident I'll be making use of the new iPad's Face ID.
Not trying to call you out, but I just don’t understand why people are having an issue with possibly having to take an extra 3-4 seconds to turn the iPad to unlock it. I mean, I can’t unlock my iPad by placing my figure backwards on it, but I turn it and then it works (taking me 4-5 seconds extra.)
Again no offense, criticism, or malice intended. I just see so many people saying the portrait mode thing is a deal-breaker. Me? I say it’s a small, small price to pay to have a much more secure and bigger screen iPad.

That's the issue - it's like having a phone take 3-4 seconds to unlock. & it wouldn't be once every 5-10 unlocks..........my iPad lives in landscape mode......I hardly ever use it in Portrait.

Again no offense, criticism, or malice intended.

It's ok. We all use our devices differently. & we have varying tolerances when it comes to how long a repetitive task takes. For me, unlocking needs to be as fast as possible, as I lock the iPad frequently to preserve battery life. :D

Yeah, I agree, and your second paragraph makes sense now that I think about. I honestly don’t care about the time to get in the tablet, as long as it’s more or less like the iPhone X or iPad Pro 2 in terms of load screen.

Kallum.

I picked up a 10.5” 256GB cellular model with Smart Keyboard and Pencil for $500 yesterday. If people want to give away the current model for basically 50% off, I’m there. Have standard warranty (not AC+) until 4/2019 too, so it’s only 4 months old.

My problem is that I finally have a keyboard case that I’m in love with

Out of curiosity, what do you have?

I have the ASK for my 12.9" but it's starting to have connection issues; now I'm looking at the Brydge keyboard but am waiting until this year's iPad updates in case I decide to upgrade.

I think there will only be a one bezeless iPad Pro X with Face ID. It should have a notch and a size of 11.5-12”.

Will probably start around $999 for the basic version.

The top cellular version will likely be around $1499 or more.

Unless they go totally sans bezels (like the iPhone X) and add OLED I'm confident you're wrong. They will likely reduce the bezels but still fit in the FaceID cameras without a notch because the iPad was designed to be used from any orientation. A starting price of $999 would be a 50% jump in price. You're getting into Surface Pro territory there. Apple is always expensive but they're not stupid.

Before I sold all my stuff in preparation for the new models, I had the Zagg Rugged Messenger case keyboard case and I LOVED it. At the moment, since I'm a lot more unsure about Apple launching new models next week than I was before, I'm really regretting selling so early. Kind of wishing I'd stuck with my original plan of staying with the current 10.5" for one more generation.

I'm still "on the fence" about getting either an iPad Pro 10.5" 256 GB WiFi or wait for the new iPad Pro 10.5" 256 GB Wifi with Face ID (and supposedly nearly no bezels). I am tempted to get the iPad Pro 10.5" 256 GB WiFi because it already has 4 GB of RAM and the reasonably fast A10X SoC.

That's a nice case. If I took my iPad out more it would be a great choice for me. I tend to keep my 12.9" at home and I often prefer to not use any case with my devices in that environment, which is why I'm leaning toward the Brydge.

Similar here in that I'm considering an upgrade, except selling my current device wasn't really an issue as mine would be handed down to another family member. Earlier in the year I was definitely planning to upgrade, but now I'm not sure. If the only change real change is FaceID I won't be updating. For the 12.9" I really want Apple to slim the bezels and (more importantly) get the weight a little closer to 1 lbs.

I haven’t used FaceID ever (my daily driver phone isn’t an iPhone) but I would think it’s not that much slower to unlock than TouchID . . That said for me it’s not the time to unlock but rather the effort required based upon my use case.

Once I add my corporate email service to an iOS device I’m subjected to my company’s security policy when it comes to screen timeout and lockout feature. I don’t know about other folks, but for me that means instant lock on screen off and a 2 minute screen off when not in use.

When I’m in a meeting or conference and taking notes my screen will go off often. I think I would find it extremely distracting to myself and others if I have to lift the tablet up off of the table to point the FaceID camera at me, worse if the orientation of the camera is critical for unlock. I highly doubt that the next generation of FaceID will be limited in orientation but I do wonder about the width of the field of view given the security constraints my device is under.

TBH if I had a choice in the matter I’d set my device to only lock after a half hour of inactivity but it is what it is I guess.

I'd get the second generation 12.9. Just waiting for them to come down in price starting to get a bit impatient as I'd like to have one in the next week or two :)

I am sure they will bake in some features for users who are on the latest gen in an attempt to sway them to upgrade.

you can put your finger on it backwards and it works fine.....not sure what your talking about....unless you mean upside down which doesn't make any sense....he is not trying to scan faceid with the back of his head....but a different position which touch id works with any position your finger is in.
