If the iPad wasn't gimped, it would seriously be able to take over the "mobile pc" market if you will. It wouldn't even have to cannibalize the Mac sales, at this moment I am sure majority would just at least take a entry level of various "pro" apps like FCP. Much (as much as I sometimes despise them) like Adobe with Lightroom CC and Photoshop, both started as very basic photo editing solutions on the iPad and over the last few years have really been getting updates pushed to them probably due to both the market of people doing iPad edits and with M1 being on both the laptops and iPad.

I’ve said it a few times since we saw what happened with the 2021 IPad Pro. Apple has painted the iPad Pro into a corner where it will die. It offers very little utility for its price except for very niche workflows. It is also so overpowered for users who do buy it that replacement is unlikely until the device ends up on the obsolete products list.

Take a 1TB 2021 12.9” iPad Pro with 16GB of RAM, M1 Processor, and 1TB of storage. It is unlikely that this device will experience any serious performance reduction over its lifespan since iPad apps are still so restrictive they are targeted to the more common iPad models…

I can’t imagine the market for iPads in that price zone is very large... I’d imagine those who buy a new one prior to obsolete product list or outright breakage is an even smaller market…

But I’m also not convinced we’ll see anything on the IPad. It is pretty clear Apple is really struggling to figure out how they can split the iPad software to best serve the Pro and non-Pro lines.

To me, it is not very hard. Existing macOS apps are all ARM/M1 compatible apps and can run on the iPad or the Mac from a processor perspective. I would offer a “macOS” like mode that is able to be activated once connected to a keyboard and mouse where those apps can run. Back to iPadOS when it isn’t. In a macOS-Lite mode.

But… Apple will do nothing and we’ll all wonder why they let the iPad Pro die off. Just as Microsoft and others are finally figuring out the right place to slot a laptop like tablet.
Interestingly lately I’ve been running VM software on my iPad Pro for medical school. I use Allscripts and Epic as EHR software, and when using those programs the iPadOS circular cursor turns in to a traditional mouse pointer and it works great, like a laptop. (Although to be fair, I leave my iPad Pro at home as my MacBook Air is a much better device for all day usage thanks to battery life and much more functional software). I just wanted to see if I could use my iPad as a full laptop replacement and I can. It’s just a big cumbersome and battery life is half of my M1 MacBook Air.

Apple could very easily add more desktop like functionality to the iPad models, especially in a docked to Magic Keyboard state, or even connected to a mouse/trackpad. I hope Mark Gurman’s rumors of a heavily revamped iPadOS come to fruition this year. If not this year, Apple will take a massive hit in iPad Pro sales and any update to the current version will be met with less than blah blah blah reaction. The M1 iPad Pro with miniLED display was exciting until we saw iPadOS 15… Apple can’t afford to blow off serious software upgrades again.

Apple could just bundle it with the Magic Keyboard and call it the "Macbook Air Pad Pro". I know I'd buy one, especially a 15" version. I can still do more demanding tasks on my MBP16. No cannibalized sales.

brilliant. You have owned an iPad for this long (enter time frame here) - and have had no use until fcp arrives? Or? I mean - why buy one? Or else you are an fpc user (a real one) and you’re just gagging to use the iPad for this? Or perhaps you’re one of these ones that demands that Apple must port their own pro apps for it to become viable (I have heard people complaining that they’ll never use iPads until fpc, logic etc etc arrives, though Im not sure why all apples pro apps validate the iPad, they don’t validate the mac…)

I dunno. I reckon the rest of us will just use the iPad for what they need, and if it doesn’t offer it, just not bother. Or… do what a lot do and use it in conjunction with a mac?

I’m confused with these types of comments tbh.

Pre M1 iPad Pro: works great for reading comics, magazines, using iPhone apps that need a bigger screen.

Ok? So what’s the point here?
While the starting thread is about FCP specifically, I think OP is more brining up the more and more advanced hardware/capabilities of the iPad (specifically the pro line) but to "get" to use pro features having to use universal control/sidecar.

The iPad is perfect for what it is, but the frequent commercials and the use of "pro" questions the stance of what Apple has for the iPad Pro. Realistically what would be the point of getting a almost 13" iPad Pro with nice amazing mini LED screen and M1 chip 1TB storage, you basically have the entry level MBP at that point and it is marketed to be able to do all these amazing things and "laptop replacement" but basically limited to being used as a secondary screen for your laptop. For this scenario to be the case there are so many workarounds that need to be done, and even if they announced FCP for iPad tomorrow, the file system currently would be its own nightmare since they would probably expect you to use the photos app

I suspect iPad going to M1 was more for making production easier and more streamlined than any expected capability increases.
I disagree. I suspect it’s a long term strategy more. Merely an upgrade to the general architecture to enable future compatibility for all iPads (any Apple product) to be able to share code and general compatibility with the mac.

M1 iPad Pro: Works great for processing my large RAW images (Lightroom) and 4K video (LumaFusion). No idea regarding magazines, comics, or iPhone apps (don't use them).

Perhaps. But no one complains that a chrome book , for example, isn’t compatible with various apps. A ipàd can be a computer for many. It’s not hard to see what they mean with this marketing. ´Pro’ is merely a moniker to show the best of the best. It’s laughable that people on a site like macrumours can’t see this.

but a chromebook isn't marketed to be pro at anything. A chromebook is used for like gradeschools (in the U.S.) or first laptop of kids, and majority of them being what like a couple hundred dollars?

I understand that the word "pro" is being used to better market that device as like you said "best of the best", but when the best of the best is arguably say better than the 6th gen iPad mini (hardware wise). Besides having what a year older chip, the latest iPad Airs basically killed the 11" iPad Pro because the differences are very slim, so it would have consumers question the best of the best.

For the iPhones the pro models have much capability differences than the non-pro models like the cinematic filming mode, but what would be amazing paired with that feature? a rich video editing system.

See, I think the iPad Pro needs to be more aligning to be a companion to the iPhone Pro line with the way social media and sometimes even jobs are headed.

No, but it’s just a computer - can’t you see? You buy what you need. If it don’t do it - don’t buy it. It’s pretty simple.

I look at my computing devices as I look at my toolbox - use the right tool for the job. I have a 12 Pro Max phone, 2021 12.9 iPad, Mini 6, laptop, and desktop - I use the one best suited for the task at hand. I could drive nails with a large pipe wrench - but I use a hammer. Same with my electronics. And I ignore what the adverts say.

Maybe buy hardware when you know there is software for it. Everyone loves to throw around broken expectations of the iPad Pro when the things they are looking for don’t exist and were not promised. You should not spend that kind money of something it might get someday.
