I'm calling BS on this. Nobody would pay $500 for a phone that just has some "icing on the cake." The iPhone is billed as an all-in-one phone and video iPod, not as a phone that also can play a little music and video.

I'm calling BS on this..I have several ipods and about 300gigs of music. I don't need all of my music in my phone and in fact, I haven't even used the ipod function in the phone at all. I've used it for phone calls, wifi, email and I am totally happy. If i need music it's in the phone. If i need a movie I also have that.

Does the iPhone allow for random-filling when it comes to music?

What I mean is.. say I sync in iTunes and have a library with 50GB of music, will it allow me to randomly grab 8GB of music to fill the iPhone.. or do I have to manually select that 8GB-worth of music ?

Curious as I'm in Europe and need larger than 8GB ideally, but if it auto-fills then it would be sweet :)

The iPhone was not meant to replace your iPod. It's like insisting that just because it has internet access, you no longer need a computer.

The large capacity iPods use micro-drives while the iPhone uses flash drives. It may be that micro-drives would 1) cause electromagnetic interference with other iPhone functions, and 2) are prone to errors which is ok for music and video but not for data and software. The iPhone may have to wait for new flash drive technology.

The argument that 8 gb for a phone is enough, ignores the history of technology, .... memory needs increase exponentially with time no matter the device.

They JUST came out with a 16GB Nand chip. They have got to get the move on to develop that 64GB chip, get it out so the prices drop so they can use it.

Strong bet.

Edit: Sorry they do have a 32Gb one in the works............bit behind in the news here :D
Kanguru has a 64GB USB Flash Drive which was available about a year ago for $2,800 --> Engadget Link

Buslinks has a 64GB USB Flash Drive, also available about a year ago, for $5,000 --> Engadget Link

Anyhow, within 2-3 years I would expect to see 128GB flash memories available at consumer prices. And in 3-4 years fairly common in consumer devices.

Then again, I (read my source) may be completely off base here. ;)

As for the iPhone, I think 8GB is a good start. I am sure we will see 16GB for the 2nd Gen version.

I also came across those links. Seeing how the age of the articles I find it odd we haven't seen more progress with the 64GB Nand chips. Again we are just now seeing 16GB move into the mainstream.

Again it will be interesting.

Edit: Mainstream being that they are showing up in products the average joe uses at not outrageous prices. Just waiting to see a reply about how they have been available for years :p

Just a few years ago I got a great deal on a 256MB Flash Drive.

Now I can get an 8GB one for the same price.

As flash memory keeps becoming more popular for more electronic devices the price will continue to drop as production increases.

Yep, 3 years ago I bought a 256MB at costco for $60 on sale, 3 weeks ago I bought a 2GB at staples for $20, thats technology for you.

I'm really tired about people making comments like

" since when have you seen 8GB in a CELL PHONEEEEEEE?!?!??!?!? "

Seriously guys, look at what the iPhone IS. Forget the crazy phone features and internet... apple is touting it as "The best iPod they ever made"

What good is the best iPod they ever made if it can't hold a candle to the storage capacity of their "second best iPod ever made"

If I'm going to pay $600 for a device that claims it is the best music playing and video watching device out there, then it better be able to hold my music and videos, that is all I am saying.

Yeah seriously!

Apple is marketing it as a phone/music player/video player/internet brower, but then they say "Well, it is a phone afterall, so you don't need more than 8GB.

It's like saying "Here's a computer, that's also a car, but since it's a computer, we're not gonna put seats in it."

Apple can make the best phone ever, by having it ACTUALLY be what they claim it is, including the storage capacity to actually hold what they advertise you can do on it. They just need to increase the damn storage capacity!!

Hence, my thread title.

Apple has a higher capacity flash iPod out? Really?

Could have fooled me!

Big, clear touchscreen with highly refined interface = best iPod they ever made.

I'm tired of people shouting $600!!!11 like no other phone has ever cost that much  There are handsets that cost more that have internal storage in the (very) low hundreds of MBs. The LG Prada, which launched at nearly $800 just a couple of months ahead of iPhone, has 8 megabytes of onboard memory.

Ask yourself, "What are the alternatives for a single device solution?" Then, maybe you'll understand...

life is inconvenient.
And life without my iPhone was a lot more inconvenient. Sure, who wouldn't want a 64gb iPhone? But to wait 6 months, a year, 2 years for it? And continue be use a crappy WAP browser, or jump through hoops to sync my calendar in the mean time? No thanks. I'll take whatever I can get right now, 8gb, 4gb, even 1gb. IMO, the iPod in the iPhone is the iCing on the iCake.

I have well over 100 gigs of aac, mp3 and some lossless, and aiff on my drives.
With normal playlists and smart playlists I have more music than I need and a few TV shows, several music videos etc. I still have 2 gigs free space on my 8 gig. Works for me!

Right now i've got a 40GB iPod Photo which works great for me, and it's more than half full. When I get an iPhone, I need to be able to store all my music on it, as well as have room for a handful of feature length films.

4GB or 8GB is completely unreasonable and unusable for me. I don't care how long I have to wait. I'm not in desperate need of a cell phone. I mean, I could use a cell phone now, and the internet feature is definitely very attractive, but I can't operate with that amount of storage space.

Is anyone else waiting for an iPhone that doesn't limit the user with an unreasonably tiny storage capacity?
You should change the thread title to match that of the Mac Pro Waiting thread. Official "I'm waiting for pigs to fly".

64gb is not going to happen. It is a phone first, an iPod second. Think about it. I can see it if you wanted to wait for 12gb or 16gb, 64gb just seems like you're bored and have nothing else to post about...like me. :)

I agree. I have about 20 albums I listen to on a regular basis and then a few smart playlist that auto update. Few episodes of House along with audio and video podcast and have yet to run out of space.

You just have to be more selective.

Smart Playlist are a major key to making the most out of a large libray IMO. Too many people don't utilize this feature in iTunes.

hmmmm, price as a concern with 16GB nand flash,
lets see what else, who the hell would put a 1.8in harddrive in a phone(hence the only conceivable way of YOU getting YOUR storage requirements), ummm especially not apple, they already couldnt throw in 3G because of battery and size concerns, I don't own an iPhone myself but i think i can speak for alot of iPhone owners when i say they probably enjoy how thin it is...

and wait, whats this, the iPhone CAN play music and movies, but you said that it didn't have the storage capacity to do this...o yah and the iPhone is what it was advertised as, apple didnt say any different they stated it would come in 4GB and 8GB versions, you make it sound like they promised something they didnt give you, i dont see how you think otherwise just cause your whining about how 8GB isn't good enough for you...

your thinking is flawed, leave it to apple they know whats best for the average consumer.. and complaining isn't going to get you anywhere, it will just waste your own breath and time...

o yah and the iPhone was pitched as the "best ipod ever" because of its UI not because of its storage capacity...

When apple refers to iPhone as the best ipod ever made, they mean for its usability and user interface. This has nothing to do with an iphone's capability as a storage device, which ipod is.

I have an iPhone and never feel the need of having more than about 6Gb of storage. Unless you have a very small music library, iPhone isn't meant to keep all your songs.

Unlike ipod, you WILL sync your iphone with your mac EVERYDAY. This allows you to really organize your space on your phone, which is something you never do on for your ipod on regular basis.

Let's face it. High storage capacity is overrated.
8Gb is about 2000 songs = 8000 mins = 133 hours = 5.5 days of music
or about 10 dvd ripped movies = 20 hours = 0.8 days of movie
Who would want that many movie and songs on a device that you sync with your computer almost everyday? Apple has made it so easy to organize and sync the media that you want the most, instead of dumping all your junk in there.

one more thing.. Do you know that iphone will ask you to delete your movie once you finish watching it? That makes a lot of sense to me, unless it takes you like 10 times before you get bored watching that movie.

Wait until the 1T iPhone comes around, when there will be much bigger file you will want to keep in your device, or get an iPhone now, you'll agree with us how much you've missed out.
