Yes, this thread, truly is "*******" (insert appropriate level of insulting term)

iPhone has the best UI of any iPod, not the capacity, get over it. Apple is not going to build a 64Gig iPhone, you know why? They are 2 different product lines.

Whilst they'll share technologies and features, iPod is your media player with a large library onboard, iPhone is a cell that happens to be a nifty media player with a selection of your library. They don't want to sell you a 64Gig iPhone, they'd much rather sell you an 8G iPhone AND an 80Gig iPod.

Right that's the business angle covered, now for the tech.

The only way apple could build a 64G iPhone would be to insert a 1.8" drive which would more than half the battery life and render your phone dead half way through the day. Physically inserting 64G of flash or a 1.8" drive is impossible in the current form factor.

Now 2 years down the line, for those stupid enough to make tech predictions, fair enough, there might be a high end 64G iPhone. But i bet you the same people will be bitching about how it's not got the same capacity as the 200+ Gig iPod, and how they're going to wait until Apple brings out an iPhone of similar capacity, because their boner inspiring media library has hit 1Terabyte and they simply can't leave the house without at least 300 hrs of p*rno in their pocket.

Honestly some of the waiting whingers here just p*ss me off.
You don't like the current iPhone? Go home and take this bollocks with you.

I think Apple made a really good business decision by releasing the iPhone before a widescreen video iPod. Tons of people who really just wanted a cool iPod shelled out the extra cash for the iPhone.

Spot On!

Mind you, they might have got a mobile web browser and email for that extra cash. There's no guarantee that Apple will include them in the 6G iPod even if it does have wifi.

64gb is not going to happen. It is a phone first, an iPod second. Think about it. I can see it if you wanted to wait for 12gb or 16gb, 64gb just seems like you're bored and have nothing else to post about...like me. :)

This reminds me of that quote (falsely) attributed to Bill Gates: "640K ought to be enough for anyone".

The OP said he'd wait as long as it takes. I personally will probably never own an iPhone unless I can get it on a true prepaid plan.

Unless the iPhone flops completely and is discontinued, there will most certainly be a 64 GB iPhone someday.

I replaced my 80gb video ipod with my 8gb iPhone. All it took was about half a day of organizing. It may be slightly more convenient to have everything with you at all times but 8gb is way more content than you can possibly go thru in a day. I just choose what I want to sync at night when I charge it up. If I am going with he kids, I sync some stuff for them. Podcasts for me, travel music, new music, whatever.

Sure I will buy the 64gb when it comes out but, like others have said, I will use my 8gb until then.

ash =o)

To play the devil's advocate...

Just because YOU don't have a need for more than 8gb storage doesn't mean that MANY people don't want it. Apple sells two capacities of iPod side by side, and if that were the case then the larger capacity would never sell.

The argument of 8gb is fine for a phone doesnt hold water because its a full featured iPod as well as a phone, and I can easily use up 1GB with just photos.

That being said, while I'm fine with my 8 had Apple release an 8 and a 16gb at the same prices I would have bought the 16. Since 8 is fine for a phone, how many of you would have just bought the 8 when for a mere $100 more you could have 16gbs.

I would. Because $100 will pay four month's electric bills. Or two weeks of groceries. Or compound at 5% interest in a high yield savings account.

Of course, for those very same reasons...I don't own an iPhone at all.

Do we know that another 8GB chip wouldn't increase the price even more?

Price grabber lists a $30 difference between an 8gb and 16gb flash drive. Apple could easily have met their price points with a 16GB phone. What's debatable is what their motivation was. Perhaps there wasn't a reliable source of 16gb chips at the moment, or maybe starting with 8 would have alowed for an easier upgrade path in storage capacity.

In the end it comes down to if you need more storage then don't buy a phone now.

People have different needs and I don't think any of us here are trying to decide what he wants. What still stands is the fact that we all have only 24 hours for each day and therefore many of us simply try to point out that 8gb is more than enough to cover your entire day until the next sync. That makes iPhone capacity more appealing than it seems, when comparing to an ipod.:)

i used to have a 10 gigabyte 3g ipod. best ipod ever. i thought i could never use more storage than that.

then i got a 2nd generation shuffle, one gigabyte, and realised that this is all i could ever need

when people who havent seen a shuffle say 'how much does it hold' i say 'ten million songs'

i have never been away from my computer long enough to go through 1GB, much less 8 or 10 or 64 GB of music.

oh and watching video on the go is boring and lame

the problem with the platter driven storage though it battery life. I mean really I have a first gen ipod shuffle(1Gb) an 8 Gb nano, a 60Gb photot and an 80 Gb Video. The 60 Gb is deidcated to my car, the 8Gb is for snow boarding the nano is the gym, and the 80 is everything else. My iPhones 8Gb capacity is more than enough for just daily use. The few features I'd like to see added(1-cut and paste, 2-picture messageing(sending a picture through the sms system), 3-useing the camera on the iPhone as a video recorder, 4-getting just a little more web functionality out of the phone by allowing the audio, video, or flash apps to run on the iPhone, 5-some sort of GPS antenna, something that works on bluetooth and an application in conjunction with the iPhone) are all non hardware features...or at least I think they could be done without any hardware changes. With these few additions I think the iPhone would be the greatest ever instead of the greatest right now

See...

My library of music is now over 250GB. I don't carry music videos or movies.
Not sure why people have to do that.

I must have an iPhone with 300 GBs because I want it. The 8 GB iPhone is no good. A 16 GB iPhone is no good.

I demand that I be given this no later than September 2007. If not, I'm going to really be angry. And I'll suffer with this 8GB iPhone. :p

But would really like to see a volume patch in a 1.1.1 software update.

by the time you people get an iPhone that can store 60+ gigs of music you'll want an iPhone that can store every movie you own.

Who wants an iPhone that only stores the movies they own?! LAME! I'm waiting for one that stores every movie ever made...in HD1080.
