Unfortunately most of those types seem to keep their heads buried in the sand as to not upset the monster. Are any of the major Youtube channels aware eg Maxtech? Apple might hurry up an update if theres wider knowledge.
Only Tally Ho Tech has covered the issue with the 5700 XT:Are any of the major Youtube channels aware eg Maxtech? Apple might hurry up an update if theres wider knowledge.
Says something about how dedicated Apple is to making their customers happy when their own OS doesn't even run properly on their new machines but Windows does.
Not really. The GPU was designed by AMD and has been available on Windows for a year. Mac support for this GPU is more recent.
Willing to wait a bit for a software update to fix this. In the event that doesn't happen, I'll get on the phone with apple care. To be honest, and I know every one has different experiences, I think apple care is unmatched in it's awesomeness, and will come through, whether that be a different machine, different spec's, or some solution I haven't thought of. I could send it in and live off my laptop for a couple weeks. In the past Apple has literally given me a brand new 2017 MacBook Pro because I wanted to repair a battery in a 2012 MBP. They've given me two brand new iPhones without charging me the incident fee. At this point, I generally trust them.I’m genuinely curious what people want Apple to do when a fix isn’t available or ready yet? Obviously, people can return the machines, but is the issue beyond the 14 day mark?
Because maybe I’m being naive, but this feels like a very clear Apple Care scenario. I need the machine for work so I’m not going to return it (and I’ll have a second 4K display attached at all times anyway), but if the problem got worse or if new versions shipped out did somehow solve the issue, I would simply push Apple to exchange my machine — regardless of when it was purchased.
Or are people just concerned that the issue won’t be resolved? That I can understand — and although I feel confident Apple is aware and working on the situation, I’m less confident placing how high this is on the priority list.
So again, what outcome do people want right now, when it’s clear there isn’t a solution that can solve the problem this instant?
That being said, it seems like a problem that would reveal itself with some basic use, according to some of the first hand accounts on this thread. One of the major selling points of buying a Mac was the tight integration of the OS and hardware, but that looks like more of a liability these days, as we don't easily have the ability to update the drivers ourselves as we do in Windows.
I returned my 16-inch MacBook Pro (which also had a Navi based GPU) because it turned into a toaster oven when I plugged in a 1080p external monitor, and I'm hoping that I don't have to return my 2020 iMac. (fingers crossed)
It does not do it in Windows.Does the bug occur with the Bigsur beta or Windows?
I know this question is slightly off topic, but with regard to people reporting there is audible fan noise during idling and non-intensive tasks on the iMac 2020... is it the 10 core i9 cpu that's causing the fan noise or the 5700XT graphics causing it, or both? I'm assuming the 8 core i7 cpu with 5700 graphics provides a more quieter experience when doing non-intensive tasks such as emailing and web browsing?
I still own a MacBook Pro Retina 13" Early 2015 which is silent during non-intensive tasks, and I prefer that!
Can anyone please confirm this?
Excellent points. My last iMac, a 2011 top end model, was actually a replacement for my 2010 model that had WiFi issues they couldn’t sort out after 3 trips to the Apple store. It sucked but I ended up getting a machine that is still running today as my plex server. They’ll make it right one way or another.I’m genuinely curious what people want Apple to do when a fix isn’t available or ready yet? There is no target display mode for the 27-inch Retina iMac panels, I don’t believe you can test this.Should we play "what if"? What if I have 2 iMacs both with the 5700XT. If I connect them so I can use the 2nd iMac as a second display monitor, will it still show the white line of death? Hmmmmm
I know you caveated those statements but I really have trouble going on faith in this scenario. Personally I’ve had excellent and terrible Apple support experiences (at this point I don’t trust the store level employees). If you get the wrong person to handle your case at best you are entitled to demand free repairs endlessly until the maximum three year warranty expires. If you, like me, planned to keep this for 10 years you are then screwed. I know everyone does not do the same, but this computer is a long-term (for the computer world) investment for me.To be honest, and I know every one has different experiences, I think apple care is unmatched in it's awesomeness, and will come through, whether that be a different machine, different spec's, or some solution I haven't thought of. I have a 10 core i9 and a 5700XT, I don't hear fan noise unless I am maxing out the cores.
That’s fair. I‘ve been burned too. They bought a lot of trust when they literally gave me a free MBP that was brand new. But in the end, you’re right. This iMac cost me over 4K. I assume this problem will be fixed. If it’s not, I’ll be going Mark Ruffalo by the end of October.I know you caveated those statements but I really have trouble going on faith in this scenario. If you get a great person you might get all of the nice handling you describe, but it is not a guarantee. My very first Apple notebook had an Nvidia GPU meltdown a little before it’s fourth year. At the time Apple Store diagnosed and offered logic board replacement, out of warranty pricing. I declined and bought a new low-end pre-config notebook because I needed something. About a year later I hear on this website there is a repair extension for my notebook and GPU. I call support and they confirm and check my serial number and book me in to a local AASP. AASP asks me to sign for ~$60 bench fee if the notebook doesn’t get repaired under warranty, I agree “no worries, Apple confirmed it’s covered”. They decline the repair because there was no case notes from when I originally brought the computer to the Apple Store about a year prior, the “genius” at the time was probably too busy trying to sell me on the new notebook. AASP refuses to return my non-functional old computer unless I pay them the bench fee. I left the damn thing with them.
Use Shift-Command-3. Does not work with the marquee tool. Just do a full screen shot. When you do a screen shot of any kind, the screen redraws itself. Because of that, you may need to do the shot multiple times to capture it just before it redraws. Having 2 to 3 windows open at the same time seems to help. You can also capture it with Quicktime's screen recording. And yes, the prevailing theory is that the corners issue is software and the white lines could be either or.OK, so just doing a backup with time machine when I noticed the top left corner of its window panel was square rather than round , I did the screenshot short cut 4 to grab it but it immediately went round as the marquee tool appeared on screen. Therefore this must be a software issue?

How can this happen? delivered at a wrong address? who signed for it?
This is almost a tragedy.
