I’m really hoping they release one at wwdc this year: the rumor says that their will be one new desktop with a custom chip. Maybe that could be a Mac Mini. I’d be good with a well spec-ed mac mini. But I’m cautiously optimistic about the idea of a new imac this year. It’s just a waiting game until WWDC. I really wanna get a powerful mac to replace my aging 2015 stock rmbp, and I’ve never had a mac desktop. An iMac would be great, but I’m not going to jump in on a model that’s already a year old.
I think there's a lot more chances for new iMac than new Mac Mini at WWDC. Apple doesn't seem interested in headless Macs anymore.

You do know that Apple is still selling brand new 2015 MBP? It's not old in any ways.

Maybe old was the wrong word. It is only 3 years. My usecases have just become more demanding, and when I got it it wasnt a great computer. It’s a stock base macbook pro, with no gpu of any merit. I would agree that the apple has less desire for a headless mac, but they may believe that they dont need to update the imac since they did last year. This is apple, too. They like surprises and headlines, and they definitely know how pissed people are getting about this mac mini situation. They might throw a curveball this wwdc, who knows. And if they release a nice new mac mini, that could potentially fill my imac desire

Hi,

I'm a student who's starting to enter in the world of photo/video/3D editing and Swift programming; I'm also a gamer. Right now I have a 1,4 GHz Mac Mini (untouched from its basic configuration), which is not enough for my purposes.

I was looking at the high-end iMac 27": the i7 7700K and Radeon Pro 580 8GB combo should be perfect for all my needs (and its GPU is powerful enough to game at 1440p). I refuse to build a gaming PC because i hate to have more than one machine on my desk, and this iMac looks like it can do everything pretty well.

My question is: should I consider to buy it in April? Since Intel released Coffee Lake 6-core chips in 2017 and AMD should release new GPUs in 2018, will we see an iMac refresh before Q4 2018?

Thanks in advance for your help.

As always: How to decide on your next purchase

I'm also waiting for the WWDC in June before I buy an imac. I need one for making music and I'm hoping they fix the fan noise issue...if not I'll be buying a 27" 2017 imac.

I read an article that said apple will be releasing 3 mac models this year. Two laptops and a desktop. I also read somewhere else that they will be releasing an imac Pro this year. Since the imac pro is a desktop computer does that mean the regular imac won't be updated?

Where did you see that there would be an iMac Pro this year? Havent seen anything like that. That would be kind of strange, since an imac pro is a niche product and the imac is older. Also, maybe a wild card could be played at wwdc and we get a mac mini. That would be something.

Ok, Maybe I was mistaken and read an article from 2017. I myself have a 2009 imac and am looking for a new one. Guess i'll wait until june to see if the new 6 core imac comes out.

Im giving it a 50/50 odds of happening at wwdc. I would be disappointed if they dont, though

Tell me about it. I have the money to buy one now but I don't want to miss out on the 6 core processor. I'll be pissed if the Mac mini is the desktop they were talking about. If they are going to put the 6 core chip in a desktop I'd think it would be the imac before the mac mini.

Judging by these forums, a lot of people are in our boat, they better do their damn job and just release a new imac with a better processor this year and call it a day, I mean seriously.

If they do announce a new imac june 4th, when do you think it will be in the stores?

My opinion only, but I don't think we'll see any new Macs released at WWDC.

Apple seems to view WWDC as an event for "software", not hardware.
We'll see...

Hopefully, June 4th, but I suspect the 8th or the 15th. There really isn't much advantage to them to keep the old ones around if the new ones are announced.

I wouldn’t want to get it in store anyways. You can’t build to order. They might let you preorder the day of the announcement, but they might only open preorders a few days after

I don’t really know what you’re talking about since they almost always release some hardware at wwdc, but i could see them not doing much with the mac this year.

If you use something often, it gets put in the SSD portion of the Fusion, but if you use a lot of stuff, then the 128GB just isn't enough. The 24GB and 32GB is probably pointless for anyone that uses more than a few apps.

The 1TB SSD that the imac has an option for costs $700 more than the HD. Is it possible to buy an external 1TB SSD from somebody else and use it as the Boot Disk?

Yes, you can have external boot Drives.

It may not be as fast as an internal SSD, but I would bet that it would have a very noticeable improvement over an internal HDD.
Cheapest option while still being fast would be USB, but a thunderbolt drive would probably be ideal, but expensive.

I have made many bootable external drives over the years, they are good for trouble shooting, or keeping a cloned bootable backup.

You can use USB drives, FireWire drives, thumb drives, even old iPods as an external boot drive.

I have used a couple of my iPods as boot drives.

my question would be how much would apple charge to upgrade my Ram from 8 too 16 because some things load super slow, ( Adobe )an this iMac 27" isn't even 2 years old, an im also going too school...

It would be cheaper to just buy the Ram yourself from a third party and upgrade it yourself. Its not really that hard and https://eshop.macsales.com/ has videos for your model showing you how to install it yourself.

What I usually do is configure and order online and pick up at the store (in Oregon... no sales tax).

I'm in Pennsylvania and if I order online to pick up at the store it adds sales tax on.

You do know 2018 is the 20th anniversary of the imac don't you? I think they'd want to do something special this year to celebrate like they did in 1996 with the TAM (Twenthy Anniversary Macintoch) on the 20th anniversary of the founding of apple.

Do you pick it up in Pennsylvania?

It doesn’t (or didn’t) in 2014 when I picked it up in Oregon. I may have to rethink my strategy...

Try buying one online but not putting your credit card in and see if it charges you tax.

Changed the store on a fully loaded Mac Pro from Bridgeport Village, OR to Alderwood Mall, WA, and it went up about $1200 in tax. ($13,000 to $14,200). It's worth the 4-12 hour drive and hotel, and seeing the kids, and going out to dinner, and about $500 in other things to do that.

Are you picking up in Newark, DE?

Washington State used to have a deal where people from Oregon wouldn't have to pay sales tax there, but it required your Oregon ID. I've never been carded in Oregon for my Washington State ID for them to collect sales tax.

I don't understand why one would tax and not the other. Is the apple online store in WA?

I'm in Pittsburgh. DE is too far. The closest would be OH or WV but its not worth the trip for just a $2000 imac
