EDU Buys Used to Offer 4 year Apple Care

If you want a 4 year warranty, purchase both your computer and Applecare with a credit card (preferably AmEx) that doubles the manufacturer's original warranty. The 4th year mirrors the 1 year original warranty and will be covered by the CC company.

When I purchased my G5 Dual 500 MHZ Powermac there was a 4 year Applecare available. I don't know when that was dropped.

might as well put this out there now... how thinks tomorrows the big day?

Not me. Before the penryn MBPs and MBs came out, there were rumors about best buy inventory declining, new inventory IDs in the best buy system, and apple retail stores receiving large unidentified shipments. Right now we're not hearing any of that.

According to the best buy website, in my area only one best buy has imacs, and Boston looks pretty depleted, as did Detroit, but if you look in LA or NYC, all or almost all of the stores are stocked. So the best buy evidence isn't that strong and we haven't heard anything about new inventory id or rumors about shipments to apple stores.

But I hope I'm wrong. It would be great to get new iMacs tomorrow. I think another week or so, more likely.

The Apple store is currently offline and being updated. Hello penryn iMac's.

Guess not. I wonder what that was all about.

They are trying to wear us down. ;)

Almost worked, too. I was very close to just buying one today and forgoing the rumored updates. Then I looked at the MacRumors buyer's guide again:

Don't Buy - Updates soon (Didn't it used to say something like "Don't Buy - unless you really need it now - updates soon"?)

Thanks, MacRumors. The wait goes on.

No, it's always said Don't Buy - Updates Soon, followed by buy only if you need it.

Apple just announced the WWDC. Think the official date might play into when we see an iMac update? I'm willing to bet if apple doesn't release an updated iMac by the end of march, we'll see a Montevina based iMac or something else radical with the iMac at WWDC.

They most likely will come out at WWDC. The January 2006 imacs were released a week after Intel released the Core Duo processors. The September 2006 iMacs were released a week after the Meroms were released. The 2007 iMac was released 2 weeks before the x7800 core 2 extreme processor (which is what apple was waiting for) Since the montevina processors will come out on june 3, we will most likely see iMacs on June 10, which is WWDC

I doubt that.

Like others have said before, we will most likely see a very minor update soon (esp due to intels supplies) and then more of a substantial revision later.

I'm gonna disagree with this statement. Apple probably demanded at least a 9 month supply from intel for the iMac and heck, they may have diverted merom processors from the macbook to the iMac to meet demand.

Also, given the manufactoring costs associated with the iMacs vacuum sealing, its probably better financially for them to wait for montevina.

Arent you the same person posting everyday saying the updated imacs are coming out?

sorry but no. very very unlikely. they will update the iMacs to Penryn b/c of supply issues by the end of March or early April. They will then wait on the Montevina update till August or September at the earliest, certainly not at WWDC. People keep confusing the Intel release date with Apple's timeframe. The MacBook Pro will see Montevina before the iMac does. But you can keep dreaming.

i don't think they are going to wait.

According to the buyers guide the current model has been in production 216 days while the average iMac has a production of about 200.

If the penryn chip comes out at the end of this month then this model would be in production about 230 days and if the new montevina come out at the end of august then that will be about 150 days averaged out that is 190 days. On par with the avarage.

Considering most new computer buyers to be "soon to be" college freshmen, I'd except Apple to update MB, MBP and the iMac to Montevina as soon as it launches in order to catch this important market. Apple originally wanted to launch the alum iMac at WWDC 2007 for this very reason.

those averages mean nothing in the real world. the last counter ran up to nearly 335 days aka almost a full year between the core 2 duo white imac bump and the alum iMacs.

Another factor people keep missing is that the iMac is selling strong right now (faster than the penryn MBP) and if Apple made Intel obligated to supply the C2D processors in the iMac for a tleast 9 months, then they've got supply until late May/ early June.

No it doesn't! Touch screens are for pub games machines and iPods. It would be terrible on a desktop machine - your arm would soon drop off!

Actually, touch screens would be great for a home Tablet PC with a desktop like base station. Have you seen the garageband Modbook pictures? or the painting apps? You could have those pub games in your home. The possibilities for this technology would be endless. Also, we're talking about a touchscreen incorporated used with a keyboard and mouse, so your arms will be just fine.

Oh and the tech's also for cellphones, ATM's, etc.

No one cares about the processors. Most people that are waiting for the upgrade are in it for the graphics card. I could understand that the new processors would help the portable community but in terms of stationary computers, the processors will have minimal gain and would hardly be noticeable to the untrained eye.

Please apple, just upgrade with 8800XT 512mb plz. /end rant
